There are few things that are so unpardonably neglected in our country as poker.... Why, I have known clergymen, good men, kindhearted, liberal, sincere, and all that, who did not know the meaning of a "flush." It is enough to make one ashamed of one's species."

`Oh, you can't help that,' said the Cat: `we're all mad here. I'm mad. You're mad.'
`How do you know I'm mad?' said Alice.
`You must be,' said the Cat, `or you wouldn't have come here.'

Invariably, every sentence that begins with the words "long time, experienced card players" usually ends with a preposterous statement. Who are these cardplayers that larry phillips are talking about? Aren't these the same old impotent rocks who have played poker for decades and still lose money to twenty one year old kids like me?

"Don't you know that my prayer is growing ripe,
upon your vision, as upon a tree?"

Rainer Maria Rilke in his poem 'I am O anxious one, don't you hear my voice'

'No Pasaran' (you shall not pass!)

A slogan of the socialist workers anti-fascist struggle in the spanish civil war of 1936-39
Also, Gandalf, played by Ian McKellen says it in english to the Balrog in the Fellowship of the Ring movie.

Last one:

'Who, if I cried out, would hear me among the angels' hierarchies? and even if one of them pressed me
suddenly against his heart: I would be consumed
in that overwhelming existence. For beauty is nothing
but the beginning of terror, which we still are just able to endure, and we are so awed because it serenely disdains to annihilate us. Every angel is terrifying

-Rainer Maria Rilke in THE FIRST ELEGY

It's hard to stop quoting there because the whole poem is so fluid.

What's crazy about this is that I read the book before I saw the movie, and I remember the line from the book was "I want to have your abortion" and they replaced it with this (Palahniuk talks about it on the commentary DVD too). There's a couple of other things from the book that are "toned down" for the movie (for instance in the book they get the fat from constantly overstuffing Marla's mother instead of the lipo clinic), but I always thought that the movie rendition of this line was actually more potentially offensive than the book one. Oh well.

I don't know that i can think of a greatest quote of all time, but as far as movie lines, I'll have to go with:

"3000 years of tradition from Moses to Sandy Koufax, you're god damn right I'm living in the (censored) past!"
