WLLH Good or Bad???

I've been playing seriously for a very short time now (about one month). I'm using PT and reading micro in 2 + 2 daily.

I bought and read (and underlined extensively) WLLH by Jones. I've heard mixed reviews but can't seem to find much solid advice about it on this site. Seen SSH touted a lot so I'm getting that next (before Supersystem?).

Any comments? Can you please specifically address WLLH by Lee Jones.

Thanks

I've heard WLLH provides beginners with the basics, but its no substitute for SSH. Definitely get SSH, Super System isnt even worth reading IMO

It's necessary I feel.

It's advice is very sound. If you followed it 100% to a tee you would be better than most players, far good enough to beat the .5/1 dregs at PP.

It stresses tight play and will prevent you from throwing money away on bad hands.

SSHE picks up where WLLHE leaves off and if you wanted to jump right into it you could have, however SSHE almost assumes you have read these "beginner" books as they call them and it teaches you how to be more aggressive and take more pots by aggression/manipulation of the pot through check raising/value betting good draws, etc.

I didnt' begin crushing .5/1 till SSHE.

Awesome, never knew it existed. Cheers.

My choices.
3.Theory of Poker.
2.Holdem for Advanced Players.
1.SSHE.
All 2+2. I've read and own most of the other poker books (incl. SS) but any one of these three will dwarf all others combined. IMHO: 3 and 2 overlap a lot.

I agree that WLLH is necessary. I have not yet finished SSH (as per my goal for the month), but I feel that ITH should be mentioned somewhere in this thread. I found ITH to be excellent, and a step up from ITH. From the looks of it so far I'd say ITH is in between WLLH and SSH.

I'd recommend WLLH for a player just starting to learn to play the game. After they get the hang of things, then it's time to bring them into the SSH fold.

I once characterized the difference between the two books to a friend like this:

WLLH teaches players how to use the most important move in poker - the fold.

SSH teaches players how to use the second most important move in poker - the raise.

If you feel you must read WLLH then make sure you get the 3rd edition.

A better choice though would be to read “Getting Started in Hold’Em” by Ed Miller. It will set you up better for when your ready to read SSHE.

WLLH was the first book I came across. I read it through a few times...got it down pretty well. I found it to be a good basis to start with as long as you don't get too attached to it. Then I moved on to SSH and never looked back.

I've found HFAP has hurt my lowlimit game. I'd much rather stick to SSH since I'm very rarely going to be playing more than 1-2 good players at a time. (10 handed table) If I do see more than that, i won't play there.

SSH = goot

Ditto except I've looked at it again occassionally. 3rd Ed of WLLH is supposed to be a little better than 2nd was. I have 2nd though.

SSH before SS2: Yes

The big differences:

<ul type="square">[*] Apparently Barry Tanenbaum bashed Lee Jones over the head regarding marginal starting hands, and (for right or wrong) raising too many hands in the BB. Basically, it tightens up preflop on the assumption that it will be a while before readers are skilled enough in their postflop play.
[*]There's a whole section on playing NL SNGs! Odd to have in a limit HE book, but I think he knows his audience. Expect a bonus whoring guide in the 4th Ed.
