What would you do if...

A 17 year old showed up at your Home game, allow him to play or ask him to leave? Just assuming it was a reserved guy that was simply looking for a game, not an annoying douchebag... Hypothetical question, thanks.

Id let him play. Unless of course there is a strong reason to believe you are more than likely to be busted, then they would tack on a ocntributing to the delinquency of a minor charge. in a normal home game though? let him in.

Re: What would you do if...

I'd probably let him play if it was a low stakes game and his parents were OK with it.

let him play especially since you said he wasnt a douche bag. but the question is how old are you? i think if your 40 or even older it still would be fine to let him play because you might have one of the few games in town and you run a good game and he wants in. but i guess if he acts up you can not invite him back

Let him play if he seems cool. Doesn't seem like a big deal.

My rule is- if the state lets him buy a lottery ticket, then he can play in my poker game.

If not, he can't join up.

Re: What would you do if...

How about having to play in a $200 MTT home tourney with a ten year old? The father was playing, and he must've thought it would be cool for his son to play also. I was rather uncomfortable with this kid's presence, especially given the vulgar language he was hearing all night--not to mention the time when the father flopped a set of sevens to bust out the LAGgy host's pocket kings, which caused the host to curse at the top of his lungs, pick up a metal folding chair, and fling it against the foundation wall of the basement, smashing a box fan in the process. Curiously, although I was rather jangled by all of this, both the kid and his spectating twelve year old brother seemed non-fazed.

As it turned out, the kid made the final table of eight (out of an original twenty-four).

Some folks I know let 17 year olds play... some have a strict 18 rule. Really depends on the game. Personally I don't see the problem in it, especially if the tournament is only a $10 buy in. If you're 13 you can go play in a Magic or YuGiOh tournament for that price, so why not poker?

Magic and Yugioh involve absurdly huge rakes and a public store where the parents can find the kids and be reasonably sure they're not in the company of seedy old poker players who may be intoxicated. :P

Re: What would you do if...

Michigan state law allows home games as long as the stakes don't exceed a certain amount. They also stipulate all participants must be 18.

Since the stakes in my game are a bit higher than a lot of other home games I know of, I adhere to this rule. The law states if a minor gambles and loses he can legally get his money back. I don't want to [censored] around with that.

Agreed, but my home games are tobacco and alcohol free. Average age is probably 19 or 20.

Perhaps if small buy in ($5-$10) poker tournaments could be held at public places, with prizes consisting of store credit, your statement could hold true for poker as well as CCG's.

(There is not a 'rake', rather all monies are returned as store credit instead of cash)

In a perfect world, maybe.

In this one, on average, the organizers pocket 50-90% of the buyins from large tournaments like PTQs, State Championships, and the like. Do total prizes of about $500 mesh with a $25 buyin and 100+ players? I don't think so.

Poker isn't gambling in Michigan though, is it? I missed the 18 and older part of the law but I know if no rake is taken, home poker games are legal almost anywhere.

I believe the age requirement though.

Sounds like we are comparing apples and oranges... I meant small local tournaments, not the big events. Surely the larger events have 'rakes' as they have significant overhead involved.

At a PTQ or State Championship several judges and TOs must be hired, and that costs $$$. At a Friday Night Magic event, one person is all it takes to run the event.

C'mon, now, the police aren't going to bust a small-time home game. Nothing short of a home casino is going to attract a ton of attention.

Well, I disagree. Games get busted all the time because someone loses a lot and rats them out. A few cars in the driveway isn't what attracts the police.

I run a pretty tight game with a bunch of regulars, and I am discreet about who I invite to my games. Control is the key.

This statement is completely untrue for the state of NY.

The ONLY time a home game here is considered illegal is if the house is taking a rake or charging a fee of some sort to play in the game. (as in a TOurney with $100 buyin where 90 is prize pool and 10 is the house. Or a $10 cover charge to walk in the door).

If you just have friends over and play straight up, without whoever is hosting taking a dime other then what they win legitimately playing in the game, it is 100% legal regardless of the stakes that are being played.

On the other hand, home games are illegal if played for money in NC. It surprising how many people do think they are legal if there's not rake though. But they are wrong.

I wouldn't be surprised, though, if somebody goes to the court of appeals and asks for another ruling. It all hinges on whether Poker is a game of chance or not. Apparently there is an appelate ruling that it is a game of chance in NC although I haven't looked at the opinion myself.

If one of the regulars can vouch for him (since he found the game, I would assume this would not be a problem) then let him play.
