My cube mate got fired for looking at 2+2 at work...
So I hire a guy to work for my company. I work in a high presure sales industry. We spend 12 hours a day in front of a computer pounding the phones. The owner expects us to be at work at 7:00 am, and discoureges us from taking a lunch. It is not the best of work environments, but the money is good.
Back to the guy we hired. He was a successful sales person for one of our competitors/customers, and he and I became friends talking about poker on the phone. He lived in Boston, and our company is in California. His company did not pay as well as our company did, so I suggested that he move to California, and work for our company. He interviews for the job, and we move him to California. He starts at our company, and to help him learn how our company works he moves into my cube. He comes in and does great his first 30 days. Probably made 10-15K his first 30 days, and was really doing well at his job. Only problem was he was having a harder and harder time waking up to come to work, because he would stay up late playing poker. The boss was getting upset, and was riding his ass hard. This is a 100% commision job, no salary. In this first month of work, this guy, made about 3 x more playing poker, than he was at work, and was not taking the work conditions very well. He would call me at night, and say he hated it. So one day the boss comes in at 8 am on a Monday, and he and I are surfing 2+2. The boss freaks out(he has seen 2+2 on our desktop many times before), and calls my cube mate into his office. As he walks into the office, he hands me a note, that says "this could be it" 10 minutes later he walks out of the office grabs his stuff, and walks out the door. From his account, the boss said "maybe this is not working out" and my cube mate said "maybe your right", and walked out the door. The boss then called me into the office, and asked "what is it going to be?" Poker or This", and I said "Are you serious". He then broke down and said, I [censored] up. "I was just trying to scare the guy, and he called my bluff". I laughed, knowing full well he would not fire me, and left his office. Glad to say, my cube mate is making much more now, than he was here, and loves California. So in the end it all worked out. And as you can see I still surf and post on 2+2 all day. |

Good story. This guy is making hella money either way, and seems to be enjoying himself, so I guess it worked out fine.

Re: My cube mate got fired for looking at 2+2 at work...
Apparently no-one, anywhere, ever, has any right to immigrate to California. It's the new Shangri-La.

Re: My cube mate got fired for looking at 2+2 at work...
Your boss did a bad job of bluffing. I was in the territorial army so I know all about fear and trapping people, he should have left it to the assistant regional manager to sort out.

A Californian having the gall to tell others not to move there whilst your brethren are busy cashing out their equity and paving over the west from WA to AZ. Thanks for the laugh. |

[/ QUOTE ] weak... there is an insane number of californians who left the motherland to come to my state. does the piece of land where you were born make you a better or worse person? hell no. but being an irrational elitist does makes you a worse person. i just hate that kind of thinking. like people who live in the big city (read: new york, SF, LA, boston, miami, seattle , etc etc) who believe they are in some way more special than the guy who lives in middleofnowhere, iowa. it makes no sense. of course many (hopefuly most) californians and new yorkers aren't so silly. |
