How are you guys doing here?

So it's been a while since I played some 6-max because I've been backpacking for about 3 weeks in Thailand. Hopefully I can play some hands every evening after work. It's nice to be back although the holiday was great. Good luck everyone!

Thanks,

Guido

Welcome back. Thailand sounds fun, backpacking doesn't. Glad you had a good time.

I love the freedom, it's like poker . Better than traveling in a group IMO or carrying a suitecase of 25KG . But everybody has it's preferences I guess.

Thanks,

Guido

I did 3 weeks backpacking in Thailand several years ago. Such a great place to explore and enjoy yourself. Sometimes I think about moving to Thailand for 6 months or so... just playing poker to get by.

Welcome back. Sounds fun. I backpacked Western Europe for a couple months over the summer and at the end of this month I'm doing the Czech Republic for two weeks.

How does backpacking in Thailand compare to Europe? It sounds like you went alone?

As for how we're doing, we're getting sort of overcrowded and many are wishing for a split into lower stakes and high stakes. Still I think there have been some pretty good threads in the last few weeks with very interesting discussions, so hope is not lost .

Make sure you see Slovakia and Bratislava as well... I was in Prague this summer and I found it to be utterly destroyed by stupid british tourists... If you enjoy stripclubs you'll get your hearts desire there however. Bratislava is like a smaller and less exploited Prague. Highly recommended... Also, if you find the time, a trip to either Vilnius in Lithuania or Sarajevo in Bosnia is a great detour.

I lived in Prague in 2001 and traveled there extensively. If you have time, go east to Brno and Bratislava (in Slovakia) and south to Ceske Budejovice and Cesky Krumlov. If you are traveling with a girl, the spa town of Marianske Lazne is a great place to go. Don't forget to enjoy a Plzensky Prazdroj (Pilsner Urquell in America) and a Budweiser Budvar on tap.

If you managed to learn Czech while over there, I will be very impressed.

Re: How are you guys doing here?

I've been in the Czech Republic and Prague too but that was 10 years ago with school, good times. Out of Bangkok, Thailand is probably a little more primitive that most parts of Europe but it's getting better everywhere and that has a lot to do with tourism. About 8 million people or something every year!

The language is a problem, not many people speak English. It can be diffecult to get from A to B but that's part of the fun for me. You got the language problem in the Czech Republic too, but fortunately for me I also speak German and some people speak that there as well.

Anyway I had a great time and I went with my GF btw.

Looking forward to the silly questions I once asked .

Thanks,

Guido

Re: How are you guys doing here?

Thanks Jason, emil, and Guido for the suggestions. I'm travelling alone and I believe I have 6 nights booked in a Prague hostel (not that I can't skip out on it) leaving myself 7 or 8 days to wander around the country. The guidebook I bought also has a section on Slovakia so I might head to Bratislava if I have the time. Brno would also be neat. That's where Milan Kundera grew up.

Do you guys think I should do fewer days in Prague and more in the other places? It sounds like maybe that's the case. As for that spa, maybe I can get a local girl or backpacker girl to go with me. I'll keep it in mind.

if the moderator is not removing posts that say "how are you guys doing here?" then what is the point of having a moderator.

Re: How are you guys doing here?

Dude, lighten up. This is a strategy forum, but it's also a little inbred community. Personally I think a mid/high vs. ow limit split would help avoid these problems, because I think the occasional low content post is fine and would not drown out the substantive posts if there were 2 forums. Not that anyone has mentioned the need for a forum split, or anything.

Part of my strategy is reading any posts by Guido. Knowing that these posts may return is better than stupid so called strategy 'oh i got raised on the turn with AK when 3 to the straight hit should i call down?' posts with absolutely no insight.

Edited because I thought it was the same guy whos posted in a few threads saying they should be deleted because they don't have enough content. But the above still stands.

Re: How are you guys doing here?

You are wrong--rory makes lots of good posts. So does Guido. I have no problem with this thread because Guido has been an active member of HUSH as long as anyone and I care about what he is up to. I think veteran members should have special privileges. I don't care about the lives or downswings of people who have only been here a month.

Re: How are you guys doing here?

i can only say the same thing so many times. you want the forum moderated a certain way. many others, including regular posters, do not. you keep declaring that this is a strategy forum. but being a strategy forum does not require all posts be strategy related. perhaps youd like to head to mid-high to discuss how often stoxtrader plays online? or pot-limit, no-limit to see how much money matusow has lost lately?

when i started moderating i specifically asked if i should do what you suggest. i based my moderation on the feedback i got in that thread. there was significant opposition. by the looks of it there still is, just based on the responses to the last thread you started and this one, not to mention the proliferation of the nc/lc threads. if you show me a thread where there is significant onesided support for this type of moderation, ill do it.

enforcing the terms. deleting spam, deleting personal attacks, removing filter blocks, moving things that will get a better response in another forum, making sure everyone sees those expensive ads at the top of the page.

Re: How are you guys doing here?

Hi Rory,

I'm sorry about this somewhat useless post. After I made that post, I read your HUSH moderator post and I immediately looked when you posted it. I was hoping my post wasn't the reason you made that one.

I haven't played for about a month and before that, I played full ring for a few weeks so it's been a while since I made a contribution to this forum. I just wanted to let the regulars know that I will try to play some 6-max again after work and maybe post some hands that might be interesting. I also noticed that there are a lot of posts from players I don't know but I was wondering if there were any interesting threads in the last 4-8 weeks. So I don't have to go through all of them .

Again, I'm sorry and I hope you will contribute again too. I like your posts, most of the time .

Thanks,

Guido

Re: How are you guys doing here?

I just want to hear more about the backpacking! I haven't had the opportunity to get out of the country yet, and I am about to graduate from college this spring.

Trying to figure out where I should go for the few months/a year before I start working.

Hate to add to the off-topic discussion, but what would you all suggest?

I agree. If you've been around here for at least a year and/or have over a thousand posts to your name (and most of them are HUSH), I don't see the point to getting one's panties in a bunch if you post an LC thread now and again.

sthief09 09-13-2005 02:48 PM

Re: How are you guys doing here?

IMO

any and every original post that doesn't relate to shorthanded limit hold'em strategy should be deleted or locked. some threads can be given a chance. say someone posts a LC hand where he's against a maniac who caps the river with the nut low. then a discussion breaks out about dealing with maniacs. or someone makes a running good/bad post and some decent discussion breaks out. stuff like that.

but threads like this don't contribute at all. they only knock down threads that were potentially interesting, but no one will ever read them because of longs threads like this.

nothing against you (robk) because you're doing what the majority wants. but as we all obviously know, the majority doesn't always know best.

While HUSH is mostly simply a strategy forum, to some extent it's also a community, one whose members are sometimes interested in the occasional non-strategy post by long-term contributors. That is, *some* members are interested -- others, like you and rory, aren't. That's okay, but don't say that it's a mistake for much of the community to want to read the occasional LC post in here.

I'm afraid I'm with Grisgra here. I don't mind the LC posts. When I spent my time in small stakes, bankroll questions and moving up questions were my favorite.

Re: How are you guys doing here?

Again, I'm sorry I made this post and would never have made it when some make such a big deal about it.

I don't think the occasional LC post is a big deal and makes other posts drop. For the more advanced players the problem is that there are 20-30 posts with standard hands (for them) and the occasional thinking hand and finding that one. That's the problem IMO, wading through all the easy stuff before you find a gem.

That was also part of the reason why I asked: How are you guys doing here? I was curious if there were any good posts in the last few weeks or some things that changed lately. I asked this because, unfortunately for me, I don't have as much time as you to spend on this forum.

Thanks,

Guido

I'm running ~4BB/100 at 10/20 and 20/40 over the last 30k hands (most of it 10/20, admittedly), but everyone says that it's due to small sample size and not that I'm the greatest poker player since Phil Ivey.

Jerks.
