Most underrated frontman

Scott Weiland. He's up there as one of my favorites, along with Billy Corgan, Thom Yorke, and Josh Homme (and others), but he never gets much credit for being as badass as he is. He's über talented and an all-around badass. I'm not sure if it's too bad he spends so much time in jail or if that's part of his essence that can't be taken away. He's pure rock & roll all the way.

I don't think any of those guys are underrated, except maybe Josh Homme.

And I seriously question your idea of a badass.

Scott Weiland would be under rated if STP didn't suck.

My vote goes to Layne Staley.

very nice. Unless you're a fan, many wouldn't know that name, or his incredible voice.

I'm not saying Corgan or Yorke are underrated, just that they're among my favorites. Weiland and Homme certainly are underrated.

He's another good one. I won't argue with Staley. I can't believe you'd think STP sucked, though.

How about Isaac Brock? Any Modest Mouse fans? He's not really your typical rocker, but... he's good.

What do you eman by underrated frontment? You mean underrated as frontmen? You mean how good they prance around on stage? I thought only girls cared about that stuff? What aren't you telling us, Patrick? You're talking about how wet he makes you, aren't you?

yeah he is pretty great but not a virtuoso or anything like doug who i posted earlier.

before 'good news for people who love bad news', the OC, and 'float on', modest mouse's live shows had a pretty different vibe and crowd.

of course it was a lot better then. but half the shows isaac would be too completely drunk or effed up on drugs to even perform properly at all and the show would be horrible.

then again the other half the time he would be drugged up and drunk perfectly and it would be a ridiculously badass show.

I just listened to modest mouse "neverending math equation" for the first time not too long ago and I loved it. I have been downloading more of their stuff. Real good stuff.

How can the most popular guy in the band be underrated? If anything the rythym section of STP is underrated as nobody can think of their names, but everyone knows Scott Weiland.

Alright, you start up a "most underrated rythm section" thread then. We're talking frontmen here. And yeah, everybody knows Scott Weiland, but when you hear people talking about great frontmen, his name never comes up, when I think it should at least be mentioned.

That's what I was thinking too. I saw MM around the time of Moon and Antarctica and all I remember thinking is what a shitty frontman he was.

Great frontman doesn't just mean lead singer of [insert band I really like here]. It needs to be someone with stage presence.

SL__72 09-07-2005 12:19 PM

Re: Most underrated frontman

I really don't see how he's underrated. I've always been a fan of modest mouse and enjoyed them the one time I saw them live (probably 4 years ago now) but I've never been impressed with the singing. Maybe you mean his guitar playing. Hes a talented guy, maybe I just don't appreciate his voice.

Patrick del Poker Grande 09-07-2005 12:21 PM

Re: Most underrated frontman

I guess I mean overall everything... stage presence, writing, musicianship, the way they shape the band, everything.

Re: Most underrated frontman

This is kind of a tough question since frontmen almost always get a disproportionally large amount of credit in relation to the band as a whole, so they are seldom underrated. If a frontman is underrated, the band usually is too. I can't think of very many exceptions.

I was thinking the same thing... So I'd have to pick an underrated band where the frontman plays a large roll (songwriter/singer/guitar) or something like that. My pick would be Jim James of the band My Morning Jacket.

Re: Most underrated frontman

Scott Weiland can never be underrated because his band sucks. If anything he's way, way overrated.

Isaac Brock is very good, but I don't think he's underrated. Him and Modest Mouse have garnered tons of respect for over a decade. I just don't think he's been in the mainstream long enough to command any respect as a frontman. Even then I don't think he fits the classic model of a frontman. So in the future he may be underrated. I don't know.

Layne Staley is a good choice.

Re: Most underrated frontman

I still don't understand how a frontman can be underrated. Are you referring to a guy who's frontman skills make an otherwise mediocre band great, or just a guy who is the frontman of a band that is underrated in general?
