to all Internet pros

I play poker for fun I would not mind making a little money but I don’t have to. I have a good job and I don’t think I can ever make as much playing poker as I do at work. I am sure you want to play me now, right. Well if I stop playing on line it is because it is not fun. I don’t care If you win my money, I don’t want that but if you do good job. What I hate is if you are a [censored] and cant TY after you win a big pot from me and I say NH. Also why cant you chat with the people at the table. If you are a pro act like one. I may be way off but I think you want me to play. If not keep acting like a fing jerk.

alot of people are playing 4 and 8 tables at once. Many players also have chat turned off, so they might not see your statements.

To be quite honest, they dont care about you, you are just another fish in the pond. If you dont give them the money, others will.

Re: to all Internet pros

most people dont chat, dont ask me why because most people only play 1 table so they got PLENTY of time. I totally agree, most players online are boring. You hit a royalstraightflush and noone even says: "nh". Since most arent there to make money I dont get it.

In my opinion, many of the ones that chat and are friendly are playing hours each day at multiple tables.

But some of the pros never ever chat. I think thats a bit sick. This is your work, you do it every day, but you dont want to say hi to people u meet everyday and u dont want to comment on things that happens like once a week or so (someone hitting a roylastraightflush or a runnerrunner 4ofakind). You are just a machine making money.

Re: to all Internet pros

I totally agree with your sentiments, basically these people are arrogant and they think that you and other people like you will be around forever, and take any level of bad manners they wish to throw at you. They don't realise that online is the same as live in that you have to make the game fun for people who play for leisure if you want them to keep coming back. This total lack of decorum is the main reason online poker (esp NL games) will dry up and become almost impossible to beat, unless you are top class. The games are full of adolecent gimps who are surley when they win, and insult you if they lose, how much fun is that.

Re: to all Internet pros

try to look at your question from a pro's point of veiw. he/she is playing ungodly hours per week on 4-8+ tables for 5-6 days per week. thats why its called a grind. (this excludes the lucky few have the bankrolls to play high limits for part time and still make a living.) the players often dont have time to say NH but instead are focused on all the other events happening. like another poster stated, some have their chat off because more often than not, chat is insults, swearing, pointless table coaching, and other dribble.

another thing to consider is this: perhaps the some of pro's are introverts. they dont want to socialize.

so IMHO, chatting is a personal preference. why do you try to impose your style on others? if you want chat, go to a chat room. start a home game or do B&M. your small contribution will not be missed, others are standing in line.

Because you are an addicted fish. I could play with the naked body of Martin Short as my avatar and you will still come to the table because you need your fix.

I rarely chat b/c Its hard playing 3-5 nl tables at once

If I do chat it might be over some crazy hand or if someone says something really funny, but for me to chat I have to be entertained

Re: to all Internet pros

I must be one of those minority pro players then, as I strive to chat when I think it is appropriate. I always try to complement people on good hands when I see them, and *always* say "ty" when somebody complements a hand of mine. I try to keep things light wherever I can, and I actually do enjoy a nice conversation when it comes up (which is fairly rare). I've on occassions actually dropped a table or two when an interesting conversation came up, just so I could keep up.

Only thing I refuse to discuss is poker strategy at the tables. When somebody asks me why I raised or didn't raise, I rarely answer the question, or deflect it somewhere else. That is pretty much my only rule, as I refuse to educate people while playing.

I can't say I always catch everything, more than once I've missed Royal Flushes on a table because I was involved in a pot on another and by the time I see it it's the next hand is nearly over. But that is the price I pay for multi-tabling.

I never really understood the pro players who act like asses when they win (insulting you for playing a hand that lost), and then insult your playing abilities when you win too. There are quite a few out there that I run into on a regular basis, and I'm nearly at the point where I just move to another table - they are so toxic I rarely see fish hang around more than a couple of orbits with them on. Now that is something I don't get at all.

Re: to all Internet pros

I want everyone I play with to have such a great time losing their money to me that they'll come back next paycheck and lose some more. Often, however, there just isn't much time to do any kind of socializing. I do try to respond with at least a "ty" or "nh", since it doesn't take a whole lot of time, though even that may be delayed a bit if I'm multi-tabling. If things are flowing smoothly and I can squeeze in a little conversation I try to liven the table up, but I can't afford to chat to the point where I lose focus on my game(s).

I think it's more of a long term advantage, for me at least, to play fewer tables and make things more exciting, building a reputation as a "fun" player than try to play as many tables as I can at once, even if it means a potential loss of income. Not only is it good for business, it makes the job a lot more enjoyable than just grinding it out day after day, month after month, year after year.

Sure, some pros don't realize or don't care how anybody feels as long as they're making money. I'm not going to go out of my way to convince them to be nicer or more talkative though. Hell, if they're mean, rude, arrogant bastards it just means the ones who come to play for fun will be more inclined to come play with me

Thanks for the post, was good reading.

The thing is that a lot of poker players are jerks, especially some of the wannabe pros on here. I don't like giving jerks my money either. Which is why I came here and learnt poker.

Usually I keep chat off. I've had a couple nice conversations since I started poker, but after a certain point all the childish whining and ranting just gets painfully repetitive.

I play my best poker when im not irritated.

I often chat. I often say "nh", "ty" etc. Sometimes I miss it when I play four tables. If someone is berating a fish at my table I start making fun of him so he directs his anger towards me.

Now I don't think it really has a big impact on how many fish there are on the tables. Their 85o winning on the river just enough times does.

solucky 09-05-2005 12:31 PM

Re: to all Internet pros

exactly that is one reason why poker die/dryup earlier or later. Many people play for the social component, by the way paradise is mostly more friendly and more talkative. But not easier games.

Lestat 09-05-2005 12:40 PM

Re: to all Internet pros

This is an interesting post for me, because I also do not respond when someone says, "nh", etc. Being a pro, I don't believe there are any "nice hands". There are just winners and losers. I also don't acknowledge someone who says, "nice hand" in a live game, but I am friendly otherwise. Online, I just don't chat period, which means I also never ridicule anyone. Now THAT I would think should make the games less fun for you.

But maybe I'm wrong... It seems no chat to you is just as bad as insulting chat. Is that the case? If so, maybe I have to think more about my online demeanor.

Re: to all Internet pros

I always say "ty". If someone shows their hand after I fold I always say "nh" (unless its a bluff, then I say nothing).

No one cares about you in particular. If you decide to not play poker no one will notice. You are not in a position to engage in blackmail here.
