Hurricane Katrina Relief Tourney Poll & Info

2+2'ers. The people affected by Hurricane Katrina need your support. The posters on this forum have stepped up on more than one occassion and opened their hearts and wallets for people in need. And we need your support again.

The relief tourney will be Thursday Sept 8th at 8pm EST at Paradise Poker.

Paradise Poker has agreed to donate 50% of the prize pool to the RedCross...and Paradise will match the 50%. This is an excellent offer from Paradise.

I will be creating another post with full details as soon as this poll results are in.

We will be doing a rebuy tournament. I need your input on the amount of the tourney buyin. Poll results will be final.

There will be a special donation account (details to come) set up by GrannyMae for those who cannot attend the tourney.

GrannyMae has once again gone above and beyond in getting this tourney set up and I thank Granny for helping me get this off the ground. Also, jasonHoldem has been working hard to get this going and I want to thank him for all his efforts.

Thanks to everyone who participates. This is definately for a great cause.

I think a freezeout tournament is much better than a rebuy tourney.

Slacker13 08-30-2005 08:50 PM

Thanks to Paradise Poker

I was too late for an edit but I want to make sure I thank Paradise Poker. This wouldn't be possible without your hosting this tourney and your 50% donation of the prize pool to the RedCross and matching the 50% is huge. Thank you Paradise.

This isn't etched in stone but we felt a rebuy would be much funner, it would build the donations and those who just want to donate the initial buyin will have that option. Others who would like to give more by rebuying also have that option.
We will be posting more details tomorrow.

I know it would probably get more donations. But a lot of people here aren't that entertained by playing a 10+1 or 20+2 rebuy where the 30/60 players who don't really care rebuy a gazillion times.

Playing a rebuy tourney with no intention to actually rebuy is completely pointless.

Nice work guys

Good work fellas. I missed the tsunami tourney but will do my best to be there for this one.

Nice job.

Under normal circumstances i would agree but the real intentions of this is to raise donations.

We will take what you say into consideration. Jon

Dude the entire point here is to get the largest amount of donations not to have a serious tournament. Your complaints here are very weak.

i'm going in with anything. the payout is only 50%, so it is murder the field or get the hell out of there.

i'll hit the break first, or i will have 1500+1500+2500=t5500 and will shove that in first 5 minutes.

woooo

gimme Q [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img]5 [img]/images/graemlins/spade.gif[/img] to go broke on.

Might be weak, but I think with this strategy a lot of players who want to take part will stay away.

It is not that fun for a microlimit player to play in a tourney where people go all-in every hand because they have the BR to rebuy at will. But hey, perhaps the actual tourney isn't supposed to be enjoyable. What do I know?

Re: Hurricane Katrina Relief Tourney Poll & Info

Not to hijack the thread, but I've setup a private tourney on Stars for next Wed, Sept 7th at 9pm est. All proceeds will be donated to the winners choice of hurricane charities. I'm working with Lee Jones on how much Stars will chip in. So far he has agreed to personally add 2x the rake if there are more than 20 players (shouldn't be a problem). Many of the players I know are playing the $10 tourney and donating extra cash on the side. All funds collected will be donated to the winner's charity with a letter sent to that charity explaining the tournament. PM if you are interested.

Winning players will be expected to transfer back winnings for deposit to the chosen charity. I'm working with Lee Jones to make sure this happens as well.

Re: Hurricane Katrina Relief Tourney Poll & Info

I applaud your efforts, every donation helps but 2x's the rake sounds a little weak compared to what Paradise is offering. We get much more for our money from Paradise Poker.

I prefer $10, especially if it's with rebuys, but I would still play the $20 tourney, my money is just basically a donation either way heh.

as i said, i hope there is a tourney every single night of the week for the next MONTH. it is a horrible situation and getting worse.

however, having both of these tournaments in same thread will only confuse people. your's is wednesday and at a different site.

i think it is cool that we are doing these tournies. thanks.

i'm SURE the mods would allow a second thread. if they have watched the news, it won't be a problem.

Re: Hurricane Katrina Relief Tourney Poll & Info

Those who are having issues with the idea of a R&A tournament need to look at this from a different perspective.

For the cost of nice night on the town (lets say dinner, drinks, and a movie) you could easily have enough money to pay for a buy-in, rebuy, and an add-on and you'd probably have money leftover.

If $30 is a major part of your bankroll then pony up some money from your personal funds and make a deposit from outside sources...anyone playing this tournament to turn a profit (or take it seriously from a strategy perspective) is looking in the wrong place. Look at the money as a donation and separate it from your bankroll.

And for pete's sake try to have some fun...I know it's hard, and the poker books apparently all say you have to take this game seriously at all times, but if you change your attitude just this once you might just enjoy it and help someone in the process.

It is not really about the money. When we had the tsunami tournament the actual poker play was enjoyable and people were relaxed. With rebuys people will go all-in with everything, especially those with a huge BR . It will make the poker more about who wants to donate the most with donk plays than anything else.

And I realize some here find that very amusing, the 2+2 private tables are evidence of that. Some don't enjoy it. That is all I am saying. It has zilch to do with being stingy.

How's this for perspective: can I buy 4 or 5 rebuys up front? I plan to be drinking Hurricanes while I play, and might be too blasted to figure out how to do it when I need it.

Cool. Great idea! I will be more than happy to donate 1/2 my money to the other players and 1/2 to a good cause.

Better than my usual 100% to the better players.

Unfortunatley i cannot make this Sept. 8th tournament, so i would love some info on the donations for those who cannot make it. Once this is established, ill be ceartin to donate at least a few buys/rebuys, as that is most likely what would have happened anyways

Thanks for getting this together. I don't know if I can play, but I'll buy in and hopefully get a chance to rebuy before I'm blinded out.

Count me in. Don't care much about tourny details. Thanks to Slacker, GrannyMae, JasonHoldem, and Paradise for doing this. Through Granny's efforts, the tsunami tournament had impact far beyond what just the Zoo put in. I hope this effort will be similarly successful.

hi marty! good to see you.

i'm sure slacker is going to post this soon, but paradise has set up a special donation account called

katrinahelp

i just tried to send the previous donations to it, but it is not quite activated. it should be working soon and we will report back when it is absolutely working.

as far as the R&A tournament, i wanted to inject my opinion on this.

1. we have had AWESOME prize funds @ paradise with this $10 R&A event for former toejams. the reason is that it allows those on all levels of budget to take a shot.

2. those that want to be maniacs and buy 20 times will do so in this event. we get kind of crazy at paradise rebuys. it is NOT a squeaky tight kotz-like event, nor should it be because of the nature of this particular tourney.

if we set it at $30 or even $50, we will lose some players, and FOOL n00bs like me will never get $100 or more in the pool.

my .02

IMPORTANT!! -----> make SURE you have the correct, official donation account before transferring donations. during the tsunami, some scumbag mo-fo's tried to set up accounts with similar names and even accounts with tiny spelling errors. FOLLOW THIS THREAD for proper transfer account please. don't let a scumbag get your donation! i will confirm when transfer account is operational.

Re: Hurricane Katrina Relief Tourney Poll & Info

I definitely like the idea of a $10 tourney over a $20. People who want to go nuts w/ rebuys and donate a lot still have that option with a $10 tourney, and those who are looking to only spend a little are still comfortable joining.

GrannyMae 08-31-2005 01:23 PM

Re: Hurricane Katrina Relief Tourney Poll & Info

KatrinaHelp

is the Donation account. it is now functioning perfectly. The donations i received yesterday have been put there already.

when you enter the amount, the confirmation pop-up will say "hurricane relief". please make sure of this before you hit submit.

if you have sent a donation, please copy the email to slacker's PM (you can remove personal info)

the reason for this is because we want to provide a list on the forum and also with the red cross check when sent.

we already have posters

malo $25
doug shrapnel $50

(woo... THX guys!)

Finally, those that do not have a paradise account should use this link to set up new acct. ALL profits from your sign-up go in the fund. make sure you take the 25%, new acct. bonus when signing up. directions for this bonus are available when entering through below link. check 'promotions' tab, or look for new account banner on right side.
