Vegas low limit poll

I'm heading to Vegas for a business conference 9/19-21 and staying at the JW Marriott (way the hell off the strip). I'm on my 3rd trip to Sin City, but this is the first time that I won't have friends or family in tow, so I’m planning on spending my free time at the poker tables. I hope to play a few 4-6 hour sessions of low limit (up to 5/10) in Vegas proper. Based a forum search, I've narrowed my selections down to 7 places to play, but I'll probably only have time for 3 of these places based on my schedule. Vote for 3 and tell me if I’ve missed any obvious ones.

Thanks,
JerseyNick

MGM and its not close. You left out the Alladin but it was worst room I have tried.

MGM, from this list. I'd add the Aladdin also. Nice room and quite fishy.

First, Aladdin is the only room on the list spreading 5/10 limit now. Second, dump the Rio and the Wynn from the list. Wynn has only a 4/8 game as their lowest, so I wouldn't count that as a place to play the lower limits. (no 2/4, 3/6 or 5/10). Rio, well, they have been hurting since the end of the WSOP.

Can't go wrong with MGM. High tech gadgets, unique room arrangement, great scenery, good drink service, some of the worst post flop play you've ever seen.

If you want to rub elbows with truly lousy pokers players, try the Imperial Palace, but be forewarned it's very low limit, mainly 2/4 and tournaments.

If I were visiting Vegas and could only play at three card rooms, I would play at MGM, Bellagio, and Binions (for the historical value).

And for the wild card, as you're leaving Binions, I would stop into El Cortez for a quick session. Nothing beats this place in terms of atmosphere.

Re: Vegas low limit poll

Of the three choices I picked, MGM is tops. It's just clearly "tops" in most respects, in most categories, for the low limit LIMIT player, and for the 1-2 and 2-5 no limit player.

Now if price of the hotel means something to you, you might choose excalibur. It's right across the street from MGM, and I've always liked excal's games and staff. I have stayed in excal once about four years ago and had no complaints for the price.

Strat ain't exactly the top o' the heap in casinos, but the rooms are probably cheep and clean, and it has a pretty decent little poker room to boot. You'll typically find 2-4, 1-2 no limit, and perhaps a 4-8 there. If don't mind a little ghetto, and you secretly DO like 40oz malt liquors, do the strat.

Aladdin has been making an effort to get 5-10 with a full kill going, and they've even succeeded now and then. I've played it three times so far and I like it, will undoubtedly be a regular player of that game (since it's the only one like it in town).

Photoc: Thanks to you and the others for the Aladdin suggestion. I saw it as an editor's choice on allvegaspoker but somehow left it out of the poll. The Wynn 4/8 is appealing to me because it is the lowest game that they spread and it's been suggested around here that it is filled with inexperienced players. Is this flawed thinking?

AVP: I dig your site. I considered the Bellagio, but I haven't seen much in the way of postive comments about their low limit games. I played at Binion's on my last visit, so I left it off the list this time.
El Cortez is a definite possibility, but more for their $2 passline craps than for poker (thanks for the tip ACJ).

Thanks, Al. I was leaning toward the Strat based on some comments you and Photoc made in earlier posts and on allvegaspoker, but it sounds like I need to bump it down the list.

In honor of you, I plan to kick all these games squarely in the nuts.

The Ex's 2/6 was my first B&M experience years ago. My home game used to be a .5/3 spread, so the game came pretty naturally to me. Nice to hear that they were obliging with your request.

The 4/8 with 1/2 blinds and a half kill was a pretty fishy game even with some locals playing it was easily beatable.

"Orleans?"

I play the Orleans about three times a week. I always find the games very soft. YMMV.

Tonight, I'm giving GVR a second look.

Hilton opens their new cardroom on Friday. I took a look around (Hilton poker room) Monday night. Looks like 10 tables (if I was sober enough to count at that hour). They say they plan to spread 10-20 with a 1/2 kill (ala Orleans).

FWIW, I've been to the Strat's new room a few times and I don't believe it's one of the better run rooms in town, from what I saw on each visit anyway. I would even suggest the Tuscany $2-4 or El Cortez $1-3 ($1-6 on the end) over the Strat.

Of the ones on OP's list, I like MGM, Wynn and Trashy Castle (Excalibur) the best but YMMV.

Best of Luck

Howard

We were talking about that just last night. The dealers suck, the tables really suck (I don't like racetracks), and the floor staff is clueless. BUT the 4/8 1/2 kill game is super soft (at least the one I played in while killing time). Like the softest game ever, so passive...

On the opposite side of the opinion I was told most new players prefer the racetrack because its easier for them to stack their chips than on felt. Its possible, I don't know if it really makes that much of a difference however.

Happy Birthday, TT.

The only problem I would have with the racetrack might be the additional noise from any Antonio-wannabes doing chip tricks on a hard surface.

As for dealers, my B&M play is mostly at Foxwoods, so the MGM dealers may shine by comparison.

Like everyone else, I can recommend the MGM. However I didn't like that you can't be on the list for one game while playing another. So if 2-5NL is full, don't think of playing 4-8 while you wait. Or if you want a 10-20 game but there isn't enough action yet, again you can't play something else while you wait. However the competition is weak, the racetrack isn't as bad as everyone says, and the waitresses are decently quick and sometimes nice looking. I've seen worse dealers, but I've definitely seen better ones too.

I've only played about 25 hours or so at the Wynn, but I think this argument holds a lot of weight. I found the 4/8 games there to be exemplary, though the 9-handed play makes opponents' looser play slightly more correct. Not correct enough to worry about though; this game is again easily beatable. The waitresses are faster and better looking here, and the bar is better. The dealers are also better, and I'd recommend the Wynn if you specifically want to play 4/8.

Fat Tire Amber Ale

[ QUOTE ]
Like the ageless delight of pedaling a bicycle, Fat Tire Amber Ale’s appeal is in its feat of balance: Toasty malt flavors (sorta like biscuits just pulled from the oven) coasting in equilibrium with crisp hoppiness. Delicious stability - in the world of sometimes-precarious beer flavors – is perhaps what prompted one consumer who wrote us to say, “this beer just makes you smile.”

Fat Tire’s depth of flavor, achieved with neither a disproportionate sway toward hops or malts, tandems well with a full spectrum of today’s engaging cuisines. Salmon, dry-aged cheeses, roasted chilies, omelets at midnight, sweet potato French fries and just about anything with grill marks or garlic are just a few of the edibles we like to partner up with our Amber Ale.

Haven't tried it yet, but their copy writers have me drooling - and I'm usually a whiskey guy.

Also, the dealers there are clearly awesome (seeing as I am one). lol...

Re: Vegas low limit poll

My two choices would be:
- MGM --> Great room, soft games, good times, esp if you have friends that aren't good players. They can play the 2-4 game and feel comfortable there.
- Wynn --> I also like that the 4-8 game is the lowest they spread. I think it makes the 4-8 and 8-16 play more like lower limit games. Awesome room, very classy and good service.

Mirage, Bellagio and some others all have some benefits, but you could really just go to these two and have a great time.

Just my thoughts...

Oh, and also as long as you weren't the other guy who pushed the pot to J9 on a board that read AJ933 when the opponent held A7. Both of those dealers were quite bad.

I was in the US last week and stopped over in Vegas for a couple of nights. Hit the Aladdin on the way over and then MGM on the way back.

I was trying to make sure I was sleepy for the flight back to London so stayed up late at the MGM. You wouldn't believe the play there late at night. After a few hours the drunks started rolling up and a couple of us who had been sitting at the limit tables just smiled to one another and cleaned up for a few hours.

Would have been nice to have joined this place beforehand to get some advice on where to go but I didn't get around to it. Glad I picked a couple of okay venues (well, the girl who fixed me up with decent room rates picked me okay hotels anyway). Really want to get back there and try out a few other places.

MGM also has a daily tourney at 11 (register at 9) for 65.00 usually about 60 entries abt 10 to 15 rebuys (1st hr only). This tourney is a must if you have any remote poker skills. They do not have 5/10 limit, only 4/8 or sometimes 6/12 (1/2 kill). They are very soft games typically.
