*OFFICIAL* Hurricane Katrina thread
Damn as of 1pm CST pressure is down to 902mb and winds of 175.
If you dont know how strong this storm is Hurricane Andrew was its most powerful at 922mb and Camile at 909. Its is stronger than both of these and as of now the 2nd strongest storm in the history of the US. The Labor Day storm was at 892mb at its strongest was the strongest ever. This storm is only going to get stronger so we should seriously pray for these people who are in harms way. Take care all and God be with you. |
Re: *OFFICIAL* Hurricane Katrina thread
I cannot imagine anything worse than Andrew! My prayers are with you all.

Re: *OFFICIAL* Hurricane Katrina thread
Hmmm..so that's millibars of pressure, and the lower the more powerful?
|
Re: *OFFICIAL* Hurricane Katrina thread
If anyone is sticking around in New Orleans, please film the hurricane and post it on OOT for us to watch. Thanks. I think it would be a neat video to watch.

Re: *OFFICIAL* Hurricane Katrina thread
Having gone through Hurricane Andrew all I can say to everyone in New Orleans is do everything possible to protect yourself. This storm is a monster.
I wish everyone who lives in that area the absolute best. And I also ecourage everyone on this board to get your donations ready, these people lives are going to be turned completely upside down and will need every bit of help possible. |

Is this thing powerful enough to rip the roof off the Superdome? That would be wild.

They were saying that the dome there can stand up to a 200mph storm so who knows. The eye is now 29 miles wide.

If I were in NO right now and had no transportation to get out, I would take off running north. Now. Edit: Another reason to get out is the aftermath. The newscasters are talking about no water and no electricity infrastructure. That is, nothing left to repair to get electricity back to NO. |

Re: Latest satellite photos

Which is more powerful, a Tsunami or a hurricane ? [/ QUOTE ] They are the same thing. Hurricanes are in the Atlantic and Eastern Pacific. Tsunamis are in the Western Pacific. Tsunamis have a tendency to get stronger; in fact, Typhoon Tip has the lowest pressure ever record at 870mb. Katrina, which is now at 902mb, is the strongest hurricane ever in the GOM. |
Re: Latest satellite photos
I'd like to see some video of it. I hope someone has a camera mounted at the shoreline.

Re: Latest satellite photos
There are long lines outside of the superdome. WHY ? Are they using metal detectors on each person as they enter ? WTF ? Come on, it's a hurricane. They said that to use the restroom once you are inside, you have to be escorted by the National Guard.

[/ QUOTE ] well when you have how many ever people that will be staying in the dome, you kinda need to make sure that the operation will be safe throughout the hurricane. |

Re: *OFFICIAL* Hurricane Katrina thread
Does it say how long until the strip joints and casinos will re-open after the hurricane ? Very important. Thanks.

Re: *OFFICIAL* Hurricane Katrina thread
Ugh, this sounds like the end of the line for NO. At least earthquakes just happen, without all the buildup.
Here's some New Orleans webcams; it'll be interesting how long they last and what they show. |

Re: *OFFICIAL* Hurricane Katrina thread
Looks like its veering to the left. Probably not going to be a direct hit. Isn't the wort part of a hurricane right next to the eye?
|
Re: Latest satellite photos
Good news, but not good enough...great news would be if the winds dropped below 140mph or so, which probably won't happen... 165mph vs 175mph is a disaster either way...
