Linky [/ QUOTE ] I'm aware both are acceptable, I was more wondering which is more common. |
Re: Simple pronunciation question
What about Aunt and Ant?
|
Re: Simple pronunciation question
Not intentional, but after thinking about it, I'm pretty sure I use the former as a noun and the latter as a verb. Hmmm...

Re: Simple pronunciation question
[ QUOTE ]
What about Aunt and Ant? [/ QUOTE ] I hate "awnt". so annoying. |
Re: Simple pronunciation question
I thought about it for a bit, and realized that I say it both ways. Both sound perfectly fine to me.

Re: Simple pronunciation question
How is it pronounced where?

Re: Simple pronunciation question
It's a north/south thing.
In the north, it's aunt. In the south, it's ant. I grew in the south. I say ant. It's strange to hear people say aunt, to me anyway. (yeah, I'm aware that's probably the correct way, it still sounds strange) |
Re: Simple pronunciation question
How do you pronounce "schadenfreude"? Which is a good word for many poker players meaning: Pleasure derived from the misfortunes of others.
I know, whats Pokah? I think its a dance and so on and so forth. |
Re: Simple pronunciation question
[ QUOTE ]
It's a north/south thing. In the north, it's aunt. In the south, it's ant. [/ QUOTE ] Not in the Northern Midwest. It's pronounced just like ant. I think it's more a red/blue state thing, with exceptions for MN, WI, and MI. |
Re: Simple pronunciation question
for me it's SHAH-den-froid

It's a north/south thing. In the north, it's aunt. In the south, it's ant. [/ QUOTE ] Not entirely true. I hear lots of black people from the South say awnt too. |
Re: Simple pronunciation question
[ QUOTE ]
for me it's SHAH-den-froid [/ QUOTE ] But it's German, you have to pronounce the E at the end. I say "SHAH-den-froid-uh." |

Re: Simple pronunciation question
Everyone I know from NY says "Ant".
|
Re: Simple pronunciation question
What about alleged? Both seem to be acceptable, and I find myself using both...depending on the context.
|
Re: Simple pronunciation question
[ QUOTE ]
Everyone I know from NY says "Ant". [/ QUOTE ] Well [censored] then. From here on out, I'm just going to say that normal people say "ant" and uptight retarts say awnt. |
Re: Simple pronunciation question
[ QUOTE ]
What about alleged? Both seem to be acceptable, and I find myself using both...depending on the context. [/ QUOTE ] As a verb obviously you don't pronounce the second e, that would sound ridiculous. As an adjective I have no idea. |
Re: Simple pronunciation question
Touche. Pretty straightforward pronunciation as a verb. Friend pointed out the other night when I was reading a newspaper headline (I read it twice to different people) that I said it differently each time. Neither sound pretentious.

Re: Simple pronunciation question
awnt is retarded
