The Hotel at Mandalay Bay

My wife wants to go to Vegas this winter and spend all of my money. Right now, she's really pushing to stay at The Hotel at Mandalay Bay. Has anyone stayed there and it is really worth the $$$? The best rates I've seen so far are $300/night weekends and $200/night weekday. Anyone know of a better rate out there, or should I save my money and hole up at the Roach Motel?

Thanks

I just got back from Vegas. I didn't stay there (I stayed with a friend), but a friend's wife told me you should stay there.

It's nice but if it were be I would push to stay at the wynn. It's newer, bigger poker room..and this one is for the wife..it's across the street from the mall.

I second the Wynn suggestion, wish I had stayed there. Mandalay Bay itself is very nice. IMO, pass on The Hotel and its extra $$$ unless it is a deal killer, in which case I say do whatever it takes to get to Veags.

Amid:

I'm going to The Hotel the last weekend in September with my regular crew. We go to Vegas at least twice a year for pleasure and have always stayed at Mandalay and then, when it opened The Hotel. I've also stayed at the other high end properties like the Bellagio and the Venetian, here are my reasons for going back to The Hotel:

1. The MB property has a very young atmosphere compared to the Bellagio and the Venetian which are more business hotels.
2. Great pool area - maybe the best in Vegas.
3. Great sports book
4. The Hotel's room are true suites - 2 rooms 1 1/2 bath with a high end finish similar to the Bellagio.

On the down-side, the poker room is mediocre at best and some say the location is not convenient (I've never walked anywhere in Vegas - so who cares!!). If your wife wants to brag about where she stayed go to the Bellagio for the same price. For a good value and poker room, I think MGM maybe the best choice (if necessary, upgrade to a suite, to impress.

Mandalay Bay is ALL the way at the south end of the strip - that makes it fairly inconvenient to get to other casinos.

The Bellagio is a MUCH better location - as is the Wynn.

The nice thing about the Wynn for your wife is that it is right across from the mall.

Also, don't let this map deceive you as to how far apart things are.

i.e. I thought the walk from Excalibur to Rio would be cake. whoops.

(I think it took about an hour)

What do you truely want out of a hotel? Poker? Gambling? Malls to shop in and shows?

Now mandalay bay is prob on the top 5 list of nice casinos on the strip. But a regular room there, is just about the same at any other major hotel.

Do you want to be right next to a big poker room? If so you might want to consider MGM or Mirage. Do you want to be close to everything you can walk to? Then Caesar's might be a good choice (no poker room yet).

What exactly do you plan to do on your trip? Also anywhere is close by if you get a rental car. I prefer it because I hate constantly paying for cabs to take me everywhere.

the hotel like anywhere else has a few plusses and a few negatives. plusses r the suites are sweet big room and plasma screens for the 6 minutes a day u spend there. the pool at the bay is very nice and it is a younger more lively crowd. downsides r the no action poker room and the bad location. i would opt to get the poker rate at wynn for reasons others have stated.

Re: The Hotel at Mandalay Bay

Thanks to everyone for their replies and great info. My wife and I have been to Vegas tons of times and have stayed at many different places. The reason she wants to do the Hotel this trip is because she wants a "fancy" trip where we don't skimp on any expenses. We'll probably see a show and have a fancy dinner somewhere. I doubt I'll have the time to put in any serious hours at a poker room, so getting a casino rate probably won't work.

Several people have suggested the Wynn. I went to the Casino and wasn't all that impressed. If anyone has been there, how do the rooms compare to your "standard" Vegas room.

Thanks again,

Re: The Hotel at Mandalay Bay

I just spent 4 days at the Hotel last month with Mrs. AnyAce and it rocked. Rooms were extremely nice with granite and hardwood everywhere and 3 plasma screen TVs (one in bathroom, even). Fax machine and high speed internet were handy since I had to work a bit while I was there. Definitely one of the nicest rooms I've been in. We went picked our dates to coincide witha low rate (I think it was $179). Mrs AnyAce doesnt really gamble so a nice room/pool/spa is key.

That being said, I agree with the other posters. The poker room is mediocre and the hotel is not convenient to much. I didnt get much poker in.

I don't think you'll be disappointed, though I havent seen the Wynn's rooms.

Let us know how it goes.

My wife and I got back about a month ago. We stayed at the Venetian which was great! We had a nice 2 room suite for about $215 a night IIRC. The shopping is great (just ask my wife how nice Kenneth Cole was ), awesome spa with 50+ massage rooms (very reasonable prices), and the location was mid-strip. The only thing is that they don't have a poker room so you have to play else where.. I played mostly at the MGM and Bellagio.

Two shows I highly recommend.

1. Blue Man Group
- I think they just recently moved to venitian
- One of my favorite shows on the strip
2. Amazing Jonathan
- if you want to laugh go see him
- I would say take the brain child of OOT in humor, and that would be his act.

Re: The Hotel at Mandalay Bay

Because I see some poor answers here... The Hotel@ Mandalay Bay is the name of the new tower that is a separate entity from Mandalay Bay (although it is connected by a hallway). The Hotel was designed to copy the esthetic's of the Mercer Hotel in NYC, the place where Russel Crow recently went phone-ballistic on the front desk person. The Mercer is generally where most celebrities stay in NY (if they can afford the $450+ rates a night for long term stays), and trust me its fabulous.

If I had a choice between staying without consideration for gambling convenience at The Hotel, the Bellagio, or the Wynn I'd choose The Hotel - hands down its the best in it's class for a specific ty of consumer.

We have a winner!

Was able to get $220/$150 for Saturday/Sunday from Orbitz.

I agree with you on the Blue Man Group, I may go again since the Wife hasn't seen it. We may also do O or one of the Cirque de Soleil thingies.

IMO, O is the best Cirque show out right now.

Amid-

Was that a cheaper price than going direct to The Hotel?

I've never been able to beat the price that they quote booking 3-4 months in advance.

Re: The Hotel at Mandalay Bay

I stayed at the Hotel for 5 days in November so I can't comment about the pool but:

1) It is a young west coast type crowd that hangs out there.
2) Nice room but not great
3) I had an issue with my wife and a spa treatment that went very bad it was the worse handling of a customer issue I have ever seen ( I travel worldwide on business).
4) It is far away from everything if you like to take a walk.

My recommendation is go somewhere else for the $$$.
