What gets under your skin when playing a poker game?

No matter how cool one may claim I think we all have a certain thing that really gets to us.

For me its the maniac (with 73s) reraising me just because (with his 3 outer) and then hitting his card on the end. That drives me nuts.

When people, that are friends, play at the same live game are in a hand with only one another and decide that they'd like to check it through, face up after preflop.

The guy who smells, the donk woman who is hostile to the loudmouthed lag table coach and the guy who wants to brag about picking up another player's tells at the table.

Being outplayed by a LAG.

Honestly, when I have a hand dominated and he pairs his kicker while I don't.

Re: What gets under your skin when playing a poker game?

Outplayed or he out dumbs you. FOR EXAMPLE.

BOARD (AK2 3)

(AKo) TAG: "Ok he likes to reraise pfeflop with Axs and I hit 2 pair on the flop and its rainbow, I got this bastard on the turn and I know he will call even if I raise and cap, hes done this the last 4 times." TAG raises the turn.

(57o) LAG: "he raised? hes bluffing!!!! I reraise..."

gets capped and LAG calls

river is a 4.... end of story.

I hate people who sit next to me and are truly annoying: laugh or can't STFU and play, or show me their cards every time I'm not in the hand. People who think I give a [censored] about them & should rather STFU and die.

Re: What gets under your skin when playing a poker game?

The opponent who rationalizes that they hung around with 88 and JJQ on the board and a raise because they "put you on AK" and were "trapping you".

Of course they didn't put you on AK because they never raised until the 8 hit the river to beat your trip Tens.

Just admit you made a fishy suckout! Don't blow smoke up my butt about it.

rgschackelford 08-12-2005 01:44 AM

Re: What gets under your skin when playing a poker game?

You hit the nail on the head. The suckout is exactly that, IT SUCKS! But it's even worse when someone hits their crazy three-outer with crap cards to begin with (maybe they were suited, and that's the stupid rationalization). That is pretty bad. But it's even worse, when they make it look like it was their "awesome skill", and brag about it, while having that damned smug look on thier face, thinking that they're the [censored] and brr be brr. Oh, now that's the worst.

Furthermore, it's awful when an LAG plays AK passively. This one time I had AQo, and I flopped an ace. I was the only one showing strength preflop. I bet out, and am called. Turn, I bet and am called. River, I bet and am raised. I call, and the guy shows down AK. It's a sick and twisted way of being "outplayed" by someone who really isn't technically "outplaying" people. Oh well. Stand up, take a breath, get a drink of water, and chill.

Re: What gets under your skin when playing a poker game?

In home games:

1) When players insist on betting their smallest chips... "I'll raise 3,000...10,20,30,40..."

2) A dealer that flips the turn or river card in slow motion taken a peak at it and making some stupid comment before the rest of the table see it.

In a B&M:

1) The player that thinks he knows it all and can't wait to tell the table what move he just did and where he learned it.

2) The player that has seen to many WPT or WSOP tourneys on TV and will stare at you for 5 minutes during the second hand of a $40 buy in tournament.

3) Players with headphones that can’t hear if the pot is been raised, called, checked or if it is their turn to act.

Online:

1) The idiot that uses the chat box to insults or teaches bad players how to play. "You called a raise with J2 you moron, blah blah" usually resulting in the donk playing tighter or leaving the table.

Aside from the above I love poker :-)

Agreed, table coaches ruin online poker, damn them!

Heres a weird one, old people who bash young people and tell them they dont know nothing. I played omaha high low at my local casino and only old people played, I was bashed 24/7.

People with sunglasses at the casino, that has got the be the ultimate pet peeve, I could understand if it was for an important part of a tourney like say final table or a big cash game, but when its the start of a 30 dollar NL tourney, just do the world a favor and go put a bullet in your head.

1. The inconsiderate smoker who can't blow his/her smoke in a direction other than the table.
2.The bad tempered guy who berates other players...I mean I hate a suck out myself but it is inappropriate to belittle someone in public.
3.(I think everyone's said this one....)The perpetual poker commentor/announcer/Pro-hand reader/Knows everything about everything.
4.Impolite dealers...they make the fish go away sometimes.
5.Braggers and story tellers....you know the guy who is telling you stories about playing in the WSOP....If you played in the WSOP and you're sooo good then why the HELL are sitting in a 3/6 hold em game nest to me at the Crazy Moose card room...

Once in a while, a player who loses will ask me or the table for some of his money back. This bothers me so much it makes me want to leave the table. Actually, thinking about it makes me want to not play poker.

Re: What gets under your skin when playing a poker game?

1. To be very very close to win big. Just close enough to know your chances are huge, to almost start celebrating inside and then have it all teared down.

Like yesterday, 3 ppl all in (150$ on 50$NL) before the flopp. Me with AA, them with lower pp's. If they hit the flop, then I tell me that happens. If they hit the turn, then I get upset. If they hit the river, I just stare straight ahead and dont move for the next 30 minutes.

the thing that gets under my skin more than anything is when I'm playing a game and I feel that I'm not the best in the game because there is another tight agressive, level-headed soft-spoken player in the game.

i welcome all that other crap you guys are talking about.

Re: What gets under your skin when playing a poker game?

Have you ever played at Hollywood Park in LA? The people are so pathetic. Its like a Charles Dickens book. This seventy year old african american guy was chatting me up while I was enjoying a smoke in the game room. He tells me how he lost 400 playing 2/4 stud that night...
I didn't even know that it was possible to lose 100BB playing at ~20 hands/hr in a single night. He drones on about how he doesn't have any money for the rest of the month and how he has to wait for his next social security check. A few hours later he sees me cashing out, and he tries to get me to buy him some coffee. Its like these people think the casino is their home.

I see this horrible player lose ~200 in four hours or so playing 3/6. After he goes broke, he just stays there in his seat, complaining to the table, and trying to hustle the floorman for comps. After he's disabused of his notion that he is a high-rolling v.i.p. he starts soliciting donations from the table. So, I refuse to give him any money, and he gets angry and barks at me "Yeah, I expected that from you."

I'm playing on absolute poker, and I take ~150 off this guy playing 2/4. At the end of the night, after he's made multiple rebuys, he just sits there w/ no money. I'm staring at his avatar, which is a picture of him and his baby girl, and he asks if he can have some of his money back...

Stuff like this really wants to make me get a real job. It messes with my head to think about how people are ruining their lives and I am taking their money.

Actually, I'm probably going to have to take a few days off now. I've had too many experiences like this lately. The other day at absolute poker, I was murdering this mother who had a picture of her daughter as her avatar. She rebought over and over. By the end of my session, I felt so conflicted about taking her money, that I folded a 4 flush on the turn against her when I was getting > breakeven odds on my draw...

Stuff like this gets under my skin a lot more than getting beat by four 2-3 outers in a row.

Re: What gets under your skin when playing a poker game?

I know this is dumb since I save money every time it happens, but when someone who has been just calling hits his hand (straight, set, etc.) on the river and doesn't bet or raise it really annoys me (especially when they have the nuts).

I don't understand why this gets to me so much. It just feels so blasphemous...

A long string of cruddy hole cards coupled with someone raising everytime I'm in the blinds with crap. Blinding away my stack drives me nuts.

Re: What gets under your skin when playing a poker game?

On the Table Coach thing since people are telling stories I got one. I went to the casino to play omaha high low and if you have played high low lately only very old people play I was the only one under 80 at the table because everyone else plays holdem. Anyway I was playing tight because it was 3/6 and I was barely starting to play and also because its common knowledge that tight aggressive is the only way to play limit.

So after about 1 hour of me not playing much since I aint getting much I get one or two hands and an old guy snaps, hes telling the whole table, hes got A/2(one of the best hands in high low) every time I call. He also starts telling the whole table, kind of yelling, dont give him action hes got a big hand, he never plays anything. Everytime he folded he would say "I had the second best hand, but he has the best one, dont give him action." He did this for the rest of the session which was about 4 hours. Now that got under my skin.

I don't see anyone mention this guy.

3 way, short stack all in vs 2 large stacks, with no side pot yet, and one big stack makes a bet on the flop, second big stack fold, and then first big stack turns over a bluff then loses to the all in short stack.

HATE YOU BASTARD!!!!!!!!

I've seen this so often in SnG's recently that it just blows my mind. It keeps every ounce of my strength to stop myself from berating the player.

I especially hate it when a few hands later the small stack, who survived only because the other big stack pushed you out and is a moran, sucks out on you knocking you out on the bubble

Re: What gets under your skin when playing a poker game?

My god, part of me feels for them... but they know they are gambling. Thats simple. If they can't play well and always lose then its their fault.

Just like.....

the person that overspends on their credit card.
the person that smokes every day wasting money.
the person who plays the lottery.
the person who does drugs
and so on. THeir own fault.

People dig their own grave. Feel for those people that Enron screwed, that AT&T screwed. Feel for those that big companies ask the government to relocate families so they can build casinos and resorts because its better for the community, according to them. Paying these families nothing close to the value of their home and giving them no choice. Feel for those stay at home moms that lose their husband at 911 and those charities kept so much of what was donated for themselves.

I feel for those that are taken advantage of not those that know what they are doing.

When I started playing poker I had the discipline never play poker again if I lost $500 while learning. I would figure I just didnt have what it took. Fortunately I do.

Maybe this was a bit extreme but people play and people lose. They know what they are getting into.

Really though, if it makes you that uncomfortable playing against an opponent it's best to just get up.

Re: What gets under your skin when playing a poker game?

I had to end my session after that incident with the mother.

Do you really believe that bad players would lose the same amount of money to eachother as they would to good players?

Obviously, if I quit poker this moment, that will have ~0 impact on the EV of bad players. However, good players as a whole drastically push the EV of bad players very deeply into the red.

Anyway, I'm not saying that I want to quit poker or that it is immoral. However, it gets under my skin once in a while.

Bartman387 08-13-2005 02:26 AM

Re: What gets under your skin when playing a poker game?

Also realize that these players probably/most likely have a gambling addiction, which means they have an addictive personality and probably a family history of such behaviors. So in all likelihood if gambling wasn't their addiction, it would be something else, alcohol, drugs, you name it they would just be dropping their money on something else. Them throwing their money away has nothing to do with you, its the rush they get from their chosen addictive behavior.

In their cases its not even whether they are a bad player or not (who knows maybe the mother is a good player), but her highs are too high and her lows are too low, causing her to then drop more money to get that high again. So its not that you are necessarily taking adavantage of a poor player who needs to start visiting 2+2, reading TOP, and looking over some hand histories. These people need help for their addictive behaviors and personality not their play.

One last thing. When you see people begging for money, remember Stu Ungar was a poker player always begging for money. He wasn't begging because he was a bad player, he was begging because he never got help for his problems and losing all the money in the world wouldn't wake him up to this fact, just like the begging mother won't get help because she lost her rent money. She will get help when she look at herself and realizes she needs help. Nothing you can do will change that.

Hope my rambling dissertation made some sense and helped put some perspective on the issue.

1) Disgrunlted old hag loses her grocery money on the slots, snaps and drives her car through the casnino, wounding my favorite drink girl.
2) Obnoxious table coach goes to the washroom, is followed by two Hells Angels enforcers, is found murdered and a really good game gets shut down while police investigate.
3) A guy dressed as Krusty the Clown runs into the cardroom and shoots me in the foot for no reason.
4) Someone slips acid into my beer and I spend five or six hours watching the dots crawl off my cards while folding big pairs and raising before the hands are dealt.

2. When someone with a totally inferior hand draws out after an all-in and gets four of a kind.

3. When someone picks their nose then throws chips in a pot I know is mine. Ew.
