Best Classical music piece of all time

I vote Requiem, Mozart

I've always liked the piece playing when Edward G. Robinson goes in to be euthanized in the movie Soylent Green.
Man I loved that movie when I was a kid.

Oh yeah, and my wind chime plays Beethovens Moonlight Sonata which is goot.

I love the Moonlight Sonata by Beethoven but I wouldn't it's the best

Re: Best Classical music piece of all time

I disagree. I think that Mozart's requiem is an amazing piece but it's nowhere near the best. Here's just a sample of pieces that I think are better.

Bach's St. Matthew Passion
Beethoven's Symphony No. 9
Mahler's Symphony No. 9
Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5

Beethoven's 5th in C minor.

Also, I know it's not the best, but I am a huge Ave Maria fan.

I haven't listened to enough classical music, but I'm going to vote for Rachmaninof's 2nd piano concerto.

Re: Best Classical music piece of all time

There's this one Chopin piano concerto that has also been done as a piano/violin concerto. (I'm pretty sure it was originally written for solo piano). I don't even know the opus or anything but it is my favorite piece of classical music. There have certainly been some more astonishing pieces and there are many better but it's my favorite.

It's pretty well-known, I think it's in C or C#.

Chopin, Prelude in D# major, "Raindrop". I've been using that to go to sleep to for years now; you can just drift away into the music listening to that.

For me, it has to be Barbers "Adagio for Strings", followed by a close second of Moonlight Sonata.

Re: Best Classical music piece of all time

Beethoven's glorious 9th, 'Ode to Joy'.

Best composers in terms of consistently good: Bach, Elgar, Beethoven.

Mozart's overrated - too many notes.

Re: Best Classical music piece of all time

It's all in the ear of the beholder, of course. My favorite composer is Chopin. He was the master of every musical element--harmony, melody, texture, counterpoint, rhythm, form--except for orchestration. But of course he made the piano into an orchestra in and of itself. If you want to sample his genius, listen to the Barcarolle, the "Winter Wind" etude, and the Piano Sonata in B minor.

Based on the space in the Schwann catalog, the most popular 18th and 19th century composers are, in order:

Mozart
Beethoven
Bach
Brahms
Tchaikowsky
Schubert
Chopin
Haydn
Wagner
Schumann
Verdi

Re: Best Classical music piece of all time

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Ode to Joy is a hymn.

The 9th is the "Choral"

And I agree with your choice, BTW. Mozart's Requiem is probably my favorite composition, but I can't call it the best when it was written by more than one composer.
