Need Serious College Funding Help
Assume you just graduated High School, you thought you were going to the college you wanted. It costs 18k per year. You have about 6k of this met on your own and all of a sudden your parents pull the scumbag move of not cosigning for any student loans with you. If you have any ideas or experience on what a student abandoned by his parents can do to get loans or somehow be able to still go to college your input would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Need Serious College Funding Help
Every person that I know that has applied for these student loans has been approved, with/without cosigner and good/bad/no credit.

[/ QUOTE ] Whore yourself out to 180 fat chicks at $100 a pop, or 18 really fat chicks at $1000 a pop. I feel for ya'...this is what my parents did to me (the tuition thing, not the whoring thing). I ended up having to work long hours all summer at a horrible job to pay my tuition...but I live in Canada so tuition back then was about $2500 (it's about $6000 now). Is there anyone else who can co-sign for a loan? A grand-parent, aunt or uncle? It's probably too late now, but there must be student loans that you can get in your state. Maybe you can apply for the winter semester? |
Re: Need Serious College Funding Help
You don't need a cosign for most student loans, as you can't declare bankruptcy on them, talk to the schools financial aid department.

Wynn 30/60?

Re: Need Serious College Funding Help
It's not me, it's a good friend of mine. I of course at first told him that he should definitely call the financial aid office at his school tomorrow and explain what is going on. It really sucks for him to just find out that he's going to be 11k short 12 days before he is supposed to start classes. Thanks for the link on the loans without cosigners bit. I didn't know what would be available for him but something along those lines might be his only option.
BTW, the Wynn doesn't spread 30/60. |
Re: Need Serious College Funding Help
Unfortunatly he is screwed. Tell him to find a cheaper school.

I guess I can thank allvegaspoker.com for that handy misinformation. Community colleges nearby that he could do for a year and then transfer?

Why would you take basics at a cost of 18k/year when you can take the exact same classes (only easier) at community colleges for less than a third of that? Get a 4.0 through 30-45 hours and try that GPA on for size applying for both loans and scholarships. |
Re: Need Serious College Funding Help
FAFSA link is completely useless. If you understood the FAFSA you would realize this is exactly what is failing him since his parents won't cosign.
On a side note all this junior college stuff, he would much prefer to go to this initial school as it has one of the best programs in the country for what he is specifically interested in. You cannot replicate this program elsewhere and yes it does start from freshmen year. In fact it is basically just an expensive junior college as it is a 2 year program. |

Re: Need Serious College Funding Help
He needs to make sure he isn't being claimed as a dependent on his parent's tax returns anymore. I can't remember exactly how long he needs to be "independent" but it's like 18 mo. or maybe two years. Once he achieves this independent status he can qualify for almost any student loan because his income won't be high enough to interfere.

Re: Need Serious College Funding Help
he can find a loan if he's resourceful they aren't hard to come by for college

Re: Need Serious College Funding Help
You guys are telling a high school graduate to get a job to pay for 18,000 a yr of college tuition... right.
I would check out banks and see what they will offer you. |
Re: Need Serious College Funding Help
I was assuming they were telling him to get a job instead of going to college.

The financial aid officer is your friend. They will hook you up. See if you can claim independence from your parents for better loans/grants. |
Re: Need Serious College Funding Help
I just thought it was insane to suggest working. Where minimum wage is these days, it doesnt seem possible to pay for tuition. His fees probably arent including room and board and personal expenses either.
I wouldnt prefer a private institution based on the high rates , but if you parents wont co-sign for FASFA I think you are out of luck for government aid. |

Re: Need Serious College Funding Help
I may be in the minority in my position, but I think it is insane to think that you are "entitled" to having your parents pay for your college education.

Re: Need Serious College Funding Help
You have to wait until your 24 years old to get the standard federal student loans without parental assistance. Hope your friend talked to financial aid, there may be other avenues. |

Is this a new requirement... because i got mine for grad school at age 23 in 2001 without my parents as cosigners. Also, I believe 18k is way too much to pay for a year of school. My entire undergrad cost less then that. I 2nd the community college opin. I am a product of CC and transfered with a great GPA and didnt skip a beat once I got to a 4 year university. I also had no trouble getting into a top notch grad school. Plus, there are a lot of hot stupid girls at CC.... cubs |

[/ QUOTE ] That is not true. look into this site to start getting basic information on federal loans and other financial aid services. There are plenty of options, but get to the FA office soon, its gonna be crowded. |
