GSN actually did a nuts segment on this recently. Quite the transformation there. Surprised that I hadn't heard about it until then.

If there was ever an advertisement for getting your stomach stapled that's it, wow. Wasn't Howard Lederer really huge like that before too?

Conspir8or 07-30-2005 10:48 AM

Re: robert williamson the heavy

Howard was hefty enough (in addition to being tall!) to be nicknamed "Bubba." His weight loss was at least in part due to switching to vegetarianism. Now lacking the heft for "Bubba," his current nickname is "Bub."

Mostly due to gastric bypass.

Quicksilvre 07-30-2005 12:14 PM

Re: robert williamson the heavy

Around 2002 or so a bunch of pros (Linda Johnson, Lederer, Doyle Brunson, and apparently Williamson) all got together to lose some weight. I know there were a few gastric bypasses amongst the bunch.

I believe they all had gastric bypass surgery. Thomas "Thunder" Keller also went ahead and had the procedure done earlier this year.

And knowing those guys there was probably a side bet on the weight loss (not a bad way to do it actually)

I, for one, had no idea Williamson was ever that big. He was one of my favorite players from the 2004 WSOP and I was lucky enough to meet him in line at the cashier when I was buying in for the event 22 this year. Very nice guy.

What is with this world? Even on a poker forum you see people obsessed with weight. Some people are fat some are thin, so what? It is pure bs if you ask me.

its not like he got on a diet and workout regime, he cheated and had a docter staple his fat stomach together....still an amazing difference.

Re: robert williamson the heavy

In my mind, it has nothing to do with judging anyone. It has to do with him wanting to improve his quality of life. Losing that weight probably added 20 years to his life and made them a hell of a lot better as well. My mom had the surgery and it had nothing to do with the way people looked at her, it had everything to do with wanting to live to see grandkids and be able to do an honest days work without feeling like you were going to die.

FWIW, I'm not fat, so this isn't a defensive post.

My mistake. I just got to the point in "The Banker, The Professor, and the Suicide King" where the bypass is mentioned. You are correct, Skeme!

Re: robert williamson the heavy

There are so many players who have had surgery. I could name a few dozen right off of the top of my head.

We definitely live the lifestyle for it.

Look at Chip Reese back about six years ago. That one is probably the most dramatic change I've seen.

but that was shocking -

I thought RW the 3rd seemed like a bit of a ladies man in his style/attitude/look, and to see him looking like that....well Jesus....that's unreal.

if u were had just lost 2 bills then im sure you would turn into a ladies man yourself. his confindence must be sky high.

as for Reese, i was watching the 89 WSOP and they interviewed Reese about the "up and commers" and he was pretty chubby. saying he turned $400 in the summer to 90k. and then they interviewed Brunson and its funny to hear him re-iterate the same stuff he says today. "Todays new poker players are all smart and college educated, yatta, yatta, yatta. Doyle, youve been saying that for 20 years get a new act bro.
