Building Your Own Table

I thought some of you might be interested in this thread on another forum where a poster details his building a home poker table.

This is the finished work.

Sure does look nice. I'm hoping the discolored circle on the felt is just a spot on the camera.

How much should you pay for something like this?

with folding legs and carpentry like that I'd expect $300. For nicely matched and joined wood I'd expect to pay $400 or more. If it's an actual table with pedestals instead of folding legs expect $500+.

I think it really depends on the craftsmanship. The el-cheapo mass produced tables with padded rails and foldup legs retail in the 350 range. For a nice custom built table with racetrack and padded rails, you're probably not going to find someone willing to make one for under 5 or 6 hundred.

My son & I built 3 tables this past spring, and materials alone were in the 250 range per table. If you go with the cheapest stuff you can probably get the materials in the 150 -175 range. Then you have your time and labor factor, and the craftsmanship factor. I would not part with any of mine for under 600.

I highly recommend doing one yourself if you're so inclined. There are plenty of good websites to help you out. Just take your time and think every step thru, measure twice, cut once, etc..

Here's a pic of one of mine, and a link to my website with a lot of construction pix. The racetrack is oak plywood, and the infield is velveteen with a 1/4" headliner padding.

The bands really detract from the racetrack portion. I wonder why he did that, instead of cutting one big piece?

It looks like they are spaced halfway between each cupholder. I wonder to seperate each position?

I think I've also seen plans like this to get a table out of one or two sheets of ply.

Wow.. flattering that you thought enough of my table to post this over here Dynasty. Thanks man!

To those asking about the racetrack... it is called a "parquet" effect and makes the racetrack look much classier than a traditional sheet of plywood.

This table is also finished on all sides (bottom included) so there are no ugly exposed ply edges or staples like with many other designs. The plan is to eventually add pedestal legs down the road once I have a free room for it (perhaps a couple months).

I love the cloth surface. What material is that and where can I get some?

Re: Building Your Own Table

It is the suited casino/speed cloth that many people talk about here. Check out HomePokerTourney.com's Supplies List Page for links to a variety of retailers who offer the cloth.

It's top notch stuff... extremely durable and you get great card glide... with ZERO pilling.

Yes.. I just snapped the shots with a cheap digital camera so any inconsistencies are in the lens

To each his own for the "parquet". Guess you've never been to the Boston Garden. I like this table's racetrack.

The suited cloth is excellent though.

On the contrary... have been to many celts games at the "gahden" back in the mid 80's. Born and raised bostonian.

Bit of an unfair comparison.

Hours added for the "parquet" style - 2-3.
Hours added for the "diamond" style - 150?

I am a woodworker and the amount of work that went into that diamond finish is reflected in its $19,000 price tag. Nice table. Diamonds were made either by some poor sot, a router, and a pattern bit (3200 times) or by CNC. Lots and lots of work in assembly and finishing. Don't forget that just the quality veneer used in the diamond table was a decent more money than was spent on the whole table here.

For something that adds a lot of visual interest at a moderate time cost what memphis did looks great.

They put all that attention into the woodwork and then have a rail with seams in the vinyl?? wtf?

Hey the table looks great. Me and a few friends just built one similar to that. Everything was going smooth untill we got to the rail. We did not know what kind of padding we should use and we could not get the vinal smooth over the padding. I was wondering if you could help me out and give me some tips for this. Thanks

I'd bet that the rail is made of leather.

I didn't know you posted here (different screen name) and obviously don't visit this forum regularly.

The felt is particularly good. It's dissapointing to see some casinos going with non-green felts.
