How much is too much?(low content)

I've finally come to the conclusion that I'm addicted to poker, well actually gambling in general but poker is my drug of choice. Since I've gotten PT I can now accurately account for how much time I spend playing, I play poker nearly as many hours as I work(40-50/week). On the weekends I will play for 8-12 hrs/day, during the week typically 3-6 hrs/night. This does not include the time I spend reading books, browsing the forum, thinking about poker, and the most disturbing of all dreaming about poker. How often does everyone else on here play? How long are your typical sessions? How much is too much?

Well off to the tables....

i think 50 hours a week is too much if you work a full time job . . . .

I actually feel pretty bad sometimes that I can't play more hours because of work and think of quitting my job. But I won't because I enjoy my job and will always make ten times more money at work as at poker. But I think about it because in many ways poker is more fun. However, if I had to play for a living, poker would probably become less fun.

honestly, I probably browse and post more than I play.

something I need to fix.

i think im in the same boat as poboy. i play way too much and it harps on my studies, but who cares college is supposed to be fun. i play poker more than i do anything else in my life. my girlfriend, my family, and my friends hate it, but who cares. don't feel like your the only one in this boat. I LOVE POKER AND IT LOVES ME!

I meant that I work 40-50 hrs/week and play poker nearly as much, probably 30-40 hrs/week playing. Still this leaves very little time for anything else.

Re: How much is too much?(low content)

I play an awful lot. I have a full time job--I own a small business (law firm)--and I find myself antsy to finish up every day so I can get home and play poker. And I think the next employee who hears another bad beat story is going to quit.

I probably play three to five hours every night during the week, and then five to eight on the weekends.

It's definitely more fun than work, but like Amoeba said, if poker was work, it'd be work.

I'm not quite addicted, I think, but I can see addiction from here.

Last weekend, I stayed up most of the night playing at Party. My wife woke me up the next afternoon like this, "Matt, Matt, honey, wake up. I think there is a poker game somewhere you're not in." Maybe I need to cut back.

man, how you guys can play more than 40 hours is beyond me.

do you guys who play so much multitable? after about 5 hours of multitabling i am drained big time.

ps- i generally play 30-40 hours a week.

Thats the worst part of it all, I would play more if I could. I think of quitting my job as well and honestly don't know what I'll do once my income from poker is comparable to my salary and benefits.

I just finished up a 70 hour week (Fri-Fri), and it was brutal. By Friday night I just had to do something other than think/read/post/talk about/play poker. I can't imagine doing this consistently, but I know the feeling, anyway.

I actually thought that playing this much would wear me out or make me disinterested, but I still wake up every morning (ok, afternoon) wanting to play. So I'm not tired of it yet.

Oh yeah, and I two- or three-table; nothing crazy like these 8- and 12-tablers. But yeah, the poker dreams...

wow, you're a machine. like i said, after four full ring tables or 3 6maxes over a few hours, my head feels like it's going to melt.

I can actually play 8 hour sessions 4-tabling 6max without any problems when I'm on my A game. If I find myself needing to quit it's because I'm losing focus and I'm afraid I'm going to start playing like crap and destroy my whole session. I think that's why my win rate has improved dramatically lately. I've been playing shorter sessions and avoiding those mistakes that wipe out a whole good session which I used to make with some regularity.

Too much poker? Blasphemy!! Go immediately to your backyard and sacrifice a sheep, shave your head and say 2,000,000 "Hail Doyle's" while praying to the poker gods for forgiveness.

If you can't find a sheep, your girlfriends cat will do.

I love poker, but don't have much fun with it anymore. I hate playing so low that I'm like a robot. I can rarely put successful plays on anybody. I'm gonna go cry.

Re: How much is too much?(low content)

Why don't you just 'take a shot' instead?

-Skeme- 07-30-2005 12:08 PM

Re: How much is too much?(low content)

I'd have 2 buyins at a level where anything anything matters. I'd rather rarely enjoy playing at lower limits, grinding up, then be broke.

TheWorstPlayer 07-30-2005 03:10 PM

Re: How much is too much?(low content)

Ah, okay. Then just grind out NL100 I guess. But I definitely would encourage taking a shot when you can. I technically wasn't super bankrolled for NL200 when I started playing it but it has worked out very well for me. And I plan on taking a shot at NL400 as soon as I feel comfortable at NL200. Cheers.

Re: How much is too much?(low content)

Yeah, I think you guys officially have a problem...

Having said that, I'm actually thinking about playing poker now instead of watching the Cubs game. But then I would know I was just as much of a mess as you guys...lol

By the way, I probably play 15-18 hours a week, and I do find myself having to limit myself or else I would do nothing but play poker all week.

poboy 07-30-2005 04:38 PM

Re: How much is too much?(low content)

Wow and I thought I had a problem, 70 hours? You need some serious help. How do you split up your sessions or do you? I find a need a break every 3-4 hours after 3-4 tabling. I used to go do something else besides poker now I just go play a different form of poker for an hour or so.

P.S. I'd play 70 hours too if I could.

Re: How much is too much?(low content)

Yeah, but I'm not even at 20 buyins for $100 currently. I was at $200 a month or so ago, with my $4000, but my second day on the job wasn't as nice as I expected. I dropped like 5 buyins that day and haven't been back since.
