Best Comedy of the Last 30 years - Elite Eight

Well, it seems the better movies won most of these matchups. The Elite Eight round will be particularly brutal with some fierce matchups. Enjoy...

Office Space vs Lebowski...crap. That's not fair!

That was the second easiest one for me after the Airplane one. I voted Office Space, Airplane!, and Groundhog. Didn't vote in the first one because I haven't seen Spinal Tap and don't remember much of Princess Bride.

Lebowski and Office Space is the worst...two fine American films going head-to-head. The others are far more clear-cut.

Office Space is one of my favorites, Im leaning Lebowski though, because I think it's funnier overall--then Groundhog Day, Spinal Tap, and my # 1 is CaddyShack.

The ignorable offense for this round is a vote for Groundhog Day instead of Grail.

C'mon people, help me reach my goal of 100!

Re: Best Comedy of the Last 30 years - Elite Eight

Lebowski vs. Office Space is probably the hardest choice we've had in one of these sorts of polls. I ended up going Lebowski, but I'm not too happy about it.

Airplane was an easy pick over Caddyshack (even though the latter is quite good), and Groundhog Day was an easy pick over Monty Python, simply because it's a vote against Monty Python. Princess Bride may be a better movie than Spinal Tap, but Spinal Tap was funnier.

Re: Best Comedy of the Last 30 years - Elite Eight

Office Space and Lebowski was an easy choice for me, I am just not a huge fan of Office Space. I will usually watch and laugh through the first 45 minutes or so on TV, but the last half of the film always loses me. Lebowski is, IMO, sublime comic genius. Tough one for me was Groundhog Day vs. Holy Grail. They're funny on such different levels that I have a rough time comparing them. Eventually I went with Holy Grail for pure belly laughs, and for virgins asking to be spanked.
Airplane vs. Caddyshack was a bit tougher as well, but I've always been a fan of ZAZ movies, so despite the love I have for Rodney Dangerfield I went with Airplane.

Have to agree with you on this one. Groundhog Day is an amusing romantic comedy, but Holy Grail is comedic genius.

My personal pick would be Airplane over Office Space in the final. I doubt that will happen though.

I've made the list!! I voted Groundhog not because I think Groundhog is that great of a movie but because Monte Python is a brick of sh!t.

Does AMC know about this poll? They ran Airplane & Office Space back to back last night. Airplane still makes me laugh out loud.

Agreed. I can't stand Monty Python.

I wish I could agree with you. I guess I had Holy Grail ruined for my by being able to recite the movie before I even saw the movie. It had been quoted to death even before I saw any of it, and all the magic was lost. Now hearing people quote it just makes me want to vomit.

Airplane and Office Space were on back to back last night on AMC. Guess the programming director is on 2+2.

Man, I wish. Being the program director for AMC would be pretty close to a dream job to me.

Princess Bride beating Spinal Tap? Time to boot that non-comedy out.

Marty DiBergi: It's very nice.
Nigel Tufnel: You know, just simple lines intertwining, you know, very much like - I'm really influenced by Mozart and Bach, and it's sort of in between those, really. It's like a Mach piece, really. It's sort of...
Marty DiBergi: What do you call this?
Nigel Tufnel: Well, this piece is called "Lick My Love Pump".

I am quite relieved to see Spinal Tap in the Elite 8.

Armageddon was delayed with Happy Gilmore going down the crapper...

You guys do know that the Princess Bride isn't funnier then Spinal Tap right? I mean, there's about 5-6 jokes in the whole friggin movie!

(It's a great movie---but WTF!!!)

I missed the earlier rounds. Great to see Groundhog Day up there, classic. Holy Grail or Lebowski should win it all. Was Liar Liar seeded in the early rounds? I just saw it last night for the first time in a few years, definitely one of the funniest movies ever.

Re: Best Comedy of the Last 30 years - Elite Eight

It is fun to read this posts and reviews and what people find funny. I wonder if their is a 'generation' gap amongst the choices. As an 'older' member of this fine group I was surprised at some of the finalists and even more surprised by how the choices were going. Although I find Airplane! amusing, it is total parody, making fun of others work. While Caddyshack has some of the funniest and original scenes ever brought to the screen in my opinion.

I thought it was a generational thing, but Airplane! and Caddyshack are both from that wonderful era of the 70's that some of us had to be teenagers in. So I guess it comes down to individual taste (or lack thereof as the case might be ) Both films have elements of genius and stupidity but having to choose between the two, I will always 'be the ball.'

I missed the early rounds, is there any link to the other threads? I am wondering what happened to Animal House, American Pie, Stripes and Blazing Saddles?

I don't know about that. I'd say all the movies of the Elite Eight round are as good as or better than Animal House.

I havent seen princess bride and I know it isnt better than Tap.

Caddyshack has chevy chase in it and although I have not seen that neither I know its not funnier than airplane.

I couldnt vote on the Office space one as I havent seen either of those films neither, as they have got this far I suspect I dont need to see them.

Its bizarre the worst of the Python films is going to go the furthest.

Looking back at Round One, I am kind of surprised that 'The Ref' didn't even make the list. That is a funny-ass movie, possibly top 8 IMO.
