Why is the Felt Green?
...I said because green was the opposite color of red and would
make it difficult to see a card's suit as it was being dealt, etc. Correct me, please... -ZEN |

Re: Why is the Felt Green?
Ive played on tables with red speed cloth, and it makes the cards tough to see.
Also consider green felt craps tables and red dice. I like your guess, but why not: purple/yellow blue/orange? |
Re: Why is the Felt Green?
Green is the most soothing color in nature, and poker needs alot of soothing.

We couldn't have a felt color thread without this classic:

My casinos have blue felt. Also a relaxing colour.
A local cardroom has purple felt; I don't like playing there. |

Something about green being having a relaxing unobtrusive effect on peoples perception of it I think.

Just like a real relationship. |
Re: Why is the Felt Green?
felt is green on most gaming tables because when someone came up with the brilliant idea of putting felt on gaming tables, the most easily available source was billiards felt. Billiards felt has traditionally been green to represent the color of grass, since billiards was a game modeled after those outdoor games like croquet or (maybe bocci?) that are played on the grass. Then, once it was green, its probably very difficult to get gamblers (a somewhat superstitious lot) to agree to change. Ive seen many colors used for felting gaming tables though.
maybe bocci is played in the dirt, im not sure. peace john nickle |
