Ridiculous Tipping

So last week, I went to Brooklyn Heights with a friend of mine and we went out to this ale house for dinner, had a few beers, some good food and generally a good time.

When it came time to pay the bill, I needed the bartender to break a $20 for me, and I left him a dollar on the bar. My friend made fun of me for tipping the guy for making change, but I'd been drinking and I try to be an overly generous tipper anyway, because I know that when they see an early 20s college kid, people expect me to be an awful tipper.

Anyway, what's the most ridiculous tip you have/would ever give?

I got pizza with two of my friends back in probably 8th or 9th grade, and we were at a rather nice brick oven pizza place during prime dinner time on probably a thursday or friday night. We got one pizza to split. Needless to say, the waiter wasn't too happy about losing a table to the three of us, and didn't provide very good service.

We tipped him 120% the price of the meal just for the look on his face (we stood by the door and watched). It was well worth it.

I was at my friend's dorm one day and we decided to get Domino's. It came to 20-25 and when I got down there, the guy goes "25 for the pizza, 5 for the tip," and since I can't understand foreigners I said "what?" and he goes "just kidding" but then I process that it was what he said and laugh and give him the tip.

I tried to tip the cafeteria lady in elementary school. After buying my food I said "keep the change" and walked away. She made me take it back though.

Don't think I've ever given a ridiculous tip but the craziest tip I ever received was when I was bartending about 20 years ago. Gerry Cooney came in with a couple friends, ordered 3 rounds of mixed drinks, and left me a $100 tip. Unfortunately for bartenders throughout the NY area he has quit drinking.

I used to work in a restaurant and we had this woman who came in by herself every day for a week, order a $1.25 cup of coffee, leave a $50 tip, and we never saw her again.

I do not get this at all.

At an all-you-can-drink brunch a few years back in NYC, four or five of us had the waiter running back and forth so much for more mimosas and bloody marys it was crazy. At one point, he comes to us and says "Guys, you guys are really going through these drinks fast," and we are about to kill him for telling us to slow down when he continues "would it be OK if I started bringing out your mimosas in pint glasses instead of champagne glasses?" HAHAHAHHAHA, awesome. So we stay there a long time and get our bill of about $100. We left $200+. He was very happy.

I used to deliver pizza back home (in canada). Drunk american fishing tourists would order pizza, but would have a lot of trouble converting american to canadian or even telling what denomination the canadian bills were. I would deliver an order of like $30CDn and these guys would try to give me $50US. I'd usually try to explain that they were giving me $40 for 10 minutes work, but some were so generous/drunk they didn't care. Those guys were awesome. Also, I was a paper boy back I was like 12 and every Christmas I'd get presents from almost every house. These two neighbours would semi-compete with eachother - one guy ended up giving me $50 one day (hell of a lot of money for a 12 year old).

Sometimes tipping is just an easy way to be nice - to brighten someone's day. So, when they're mean to you, you don't have to return the favor by giving them a shitty tip, you can be nice and make their day. This is especially good if you ever plan to return to the restaurant. Next time they'll remember you for being the "nice guy" and you'll probably get better service.

Besides, 120% of the meal price was still probably just 10-20 bucks. It's not like you can't afford to make someone's day and shatter a stereotype at the same time.

My S/O and I often share a meal and sometimes get that look from the servers that we're cheap and won't tip well. But really, we just know our appetites and don't like to order too much food that will just get wasted. So, we often tip 30-50%.

On the last day of school last semester five friends and I went to some hip café in LA and drank up a storm... The bill wound up being about $410, so we left an even $500, I believe, and went on with our night.

I was really upset on the ride home when I realized that the $410 already included an 18% gratuity since there were 6 of us.

One time me and my HS buddies went to Chili's and just ordered drinks and bottomless chips. One of my friends even asked how much a drink was before he ordered. The waitress took pity on us and ended up not charging us for the drinks so our bill was like $2. I think we ended up tipping about 350%.

I too had a paper route when I was 12. The biggest Christmas tip I ever got was $30, but one of my customers did give me a old set of golf clubs he had because he knew I was left-handed.

This is true.

One person was driving, though, and another girl gets completely destroyed after approximately two drinks, and another was, well... Just a normal girl. So it was pretty much just three guys, all 18 or 19, and we weren't drinking expensive liquor.

Plus, it wasn't THAT hip.

I think sometimes overtipping incredibly horrible service, makes more of a point than stiffing them.

I had an experience similiar to the other poster. A group of about 8 of us when I was in HS went into dennys at like 1am one time. Between the 8 of us all we ordered was like 3 shakes and a side of frys. You could tell the waitress just totally had us pegged as the young punk table that shes not getting a tip from, and she gave us awful service. We sat there for like 2 hours and left $40 on like a a $15 tab. She actually ran out into the parking lot and thanked us, and apologized for being such a bitch and being judgemental. That did more for her than us just leaving her like $2.

Im not saying you should try and change every crappy service persons attitute, but sometimes its worth it.

I generally tip 25-30% if the service is good...

The only time I have ever not tipped was back in college one drunken nite I ordered dominos and barely had enough for the pizza but I ordered at least twice a week and always tipped well (minimum of $2 for one pizza) so I said to the guy, who i saw an average of once a week, I will make sure I make it up to you next time...

He starts freaking out and saying "what am I supposed to tell my kids" this pissed me off since I had always taken care of this guy even when my friends wanted to stiff him so I flipped out and told him " Why don't you tell them daddy can't afford to feed you because he can't find A REAL JOB" and slammed the door in his face

Some friends and I went to a place in Boston one time, forget the name but it was near Harvard Square I think. Anyhow, we were all underage but tried to get the waitress to serve us some alcohol. We were in uniform and that usually got us over. However this lady was a hardass about it. We were very polite though, but after that, she was incredibly rude and her service was incredibly shitty. So for her tip we left some pocket change on the table amounting to less than a dollar. She actually yelled at us across the restaurant as were walking out when she saw the tip.

Re: Ridiculous Tipping

mildly amusing tip stories:

i ordered a pizza from my local resturant and when the lady came to deliver and i opened the door i realized it was one of my favorite workers there. she has always been very nice and curteous to all the customers there and it shows big time. i tipped her 15 and she was extremely happy.

i bought these box of chocolates that look like poker chips. i had them in denominations of 5, 25, and 100 and was bringing them to turningstone and was handing them out to people i knew just for some amusing conversation. a waitress came over and i asked her for a coke and tipped her a dollar bill plus a $100 chocolate chip. she must have thought it was a real $100 chip because the look on her face was priceless and she walked away so fast as if she was afraid i might realize i gave the wrong chip and ask for it back.

Re: Ridiculous Tipping

well i dont exactly know what happened in the situation, but i respect your action of only leaving pocket change. it really symbolizes what you thought of her service moreso than if you just didnt tip at all.

however, i dont know if the tip was just. you mentioned trying to be served alcohol underage and she didnt allow it. you have to realize that by trying to get alcohol underage you are putting the waitress at jeopardy if she serves it to you and therefore she has a right to be aggrivated by your inconsiderate actions.

I can understand her being aggravated. But as I said, we were very polite and we didnt give her any sort of attitude at all about the alcohol thing. We even apologized for asking. And the service was absolutely horrendous. She ignored our table for the whole meal more or less, and was very rude when we flagged her down to get our drinks refilled.

Re: Ridiculous Tipping

This not about a tip I gave, but a tip someone else at my table gave.

I was running a conference in New Orleans (where I live), and I had plans to go out to dinner with a friend of mine who was attending the conference and staying at my house. We were having pre-dinner drinks at the Carousel Bar when we saw someone I knew casually from other conferences standing at the bar entrance looking woebegone. It turned out that she was supposed to meet some people for dinner, her session ran late, and they left without her. So we invited her to join as at an Italian restaurant in the Quarter. I rarely eat in the Quarter, so I wasn't really that familiar with this place. It turned out that it was opera night, and we were subjected to caterwauling (er, I mean opera singing) the whole evening. The food though was pretty good. When the bill came the woman whose friends had abandoned her said that they had been planning on a less expensive place, and she couldn't cover her share (didn't stop her from ordering numerous courses though). So I sucked it up and picked up her end. And then SHE STUCK TWENTY-FIVE DOLLARS IN THE PANTS of the Latin-lover-type singing waiter. I haven't spoken to that bitch since....

I've worked in food service long enough to know this isn't how it works. When my fellow servers would get stiffed, they usually got pissed and used that as en excuse to be bitter to other guests, not as an opportunity to ask "what did I do wrong."
