We have a problem

I've got a nightmare story to tell.

What would you do?

We have a weekly HE game that we play every Thursday night at a local restaurant with about 25 players.

The game has been going along for a couple years now.

About a month ago a couple of us noticed some shady dealing from one of our regulars. Turns out he is stacking the deck, passing the deck to his buddy next to him who does a false cut, and sure enough gives himself perfect cards.

My brother wrote down the cards prior to the hand that he saw him working over and sure enough when it came to showdown, those were the cards he showed.

Here's the tough part...he's a cop.

What do you think? Confront him? Shut down the game for awhile and then don't invite him back?

Re: We have a problem

Slip some coke into his pocket without him knowing and then call the station with an anon "tip". Then take his "buddy" out back and beat him until he crys like a little girl.

Re: We have a problem

Get some hidden video of him playing and rigging the deal. Anonymously send copies to his CO and local media. Don't [censored] up and let there be any possible way he could know who it was.

Re: We have a problem

Either:
1) Accept his cheating as a fee for his protection or;
2) Walk away.

There are no other viable or credible responses.

Re: We have a problem

If it's a tourney, assign seats so they're not sitting next to each other.

Another option: Take the cop aside, and say some players have talked to you about another player -- not the cop -- they think is cheating. Don't give a name, say you're not sure yet. Ask the cop -- since he's a cop and all -- what would be a good way to find out if he's cheating? How could you prevent it?
Maybe it spooks him enough to quit it.

Whisper in his ear, privately, and respectfully. He will get the hint fast. Don't hold a grudge or try to extract revenge.

Re: We have a problem

why does him being a cop hold any bearing on this situation. i dont care if its the pope, if hes cheating call him out, and his buddy. or before showdowns, start calling out his hands, as if you can read him like a book.

am i missing something here?

Re: We have a problem

He's afraid the cop will shut down the game, i assume.

I also like TT's idea of just politely -- and privately -- telling him you know.

The cop would shut himself down as well if he did.

Very typical of pigs to behave in this way, busting you for one crime, meanwhile they commit various others that are far more heinous. Screw him and the friggin' camel he rode in from bagdad on. Expose him in front of the entire group. Make sure you catch him in the act and expose it all before he gets a chance to wash the deck and get rid of the evidence. If he gives you trouble after that, report him to the precinct, the local news, your city councilman, and your congressman all at once. Tell his friggin' wife too (or more likely, his boyfriend). Make sure he gets marked as a mechanic all over town.

kill his dog. If he doesn't have a dog, then you are on your own.

Thanks guys.

That was helpful. A couple ideas we hadn't thought of.

It's a bad situation and I would like to handle it quietly...we have an owner of a restaurant and his livelyhood to consider.

My brother, on the other hand, wants to ring his neck whenever he sees him.

We're going to use some cameras to get some evidence and then discuss it futher.

Re: We have a problem

I'd call him out and publicly question his integrety to the point that he'd be too embarrased to come back to the game. If you are playing with other cops that work with him, tell them about it and see if they will take care of it (the saying they take care of their own is a double-edged sword)

If the game is illegal (not all private games are necessairly illegal - depends upon where U are at), then you'll have to be careful, but then again, he'd have to be real stupid to bust a game he's been cheating in...

The scenario you describe is why I'll drive the ~3 hours to Lousianna as I've been in a game that I later found out was rigged.

Not long ago I played regularly in a private game where the game's sponsor discovered that one of the regulars was palming chips from other player's stacks and from the chip well.

The host solved the problem by alerting all of the other players, then staging a fake announcement that the game was being cancelled for such-and-such a reason. He called the game off for a couple of weeks then started it up again shortly thereafter. The thief didn't return.

Another idea.. Talk to everyone but him and his buddy. Agree that everyone will fold every time he deals. When he gets no action for a whole night he will probably figure out what everyone else has figured out. I bet he either cuts the [censored] or no longer shows up for the game.

You want the blinds to give him their blinds everytime he's dealer in order to convince him to stop cheating? Have you thought this very far through?

other1 06-27-2005 01:17 AM

Re: We have a problem

You prefer players who are none the wiser to keep giving him more than that? I doubt they are playing 80/160.

Honestly I think OP should just pull him aside and say 'cut the [censored]'. He seems adverse to doing that, so I think my suggestion is a decent way of doing that without really confronting him.
