Neteller Accnt Hacked!!!

If you are a Neteller user you should probably read this.

I just found out someone had stolen all the money in my neteller account. The transactions description says "RM Costa Rica". The a*s*shole also tried to move money from my bank account to neteller. This is f*u*c*king scary.

Anybody had the similar experience before? Is Neteller going to refund me the money? Thanks a bunch.

Do you have a firewall? Spyware protection?

Did you only access your neteller account from your own private computer?

You dispute the word of such a long-time, well-respected poster

His name alone reeks of sincerity and credibility. Well, something there reeks, anyway.

Re: Neteller Accnt Hacked!!!

WTF? This is not a troll. I registered this new account today just to post this message because I don't want to reveal my online identity even though it's just a user name here.

Anyway, I have been very careful with all these online transactions and online account info all these years. Something like this had never happened to me. To be totally honest I thought it would NEVER happen to me.

I was so shocked when I saw my neteller blanance had dropped to zero. The first thing that popped in my mind was "how come I didn't read anything like this on 2+2?".

Neteller's investigation dept doesn't work on the weekends so I have to wait until Monday to talk to them. I will keep you guys posted. What really bugs me is that it appears so far I am the only victim. It just does not make sense.

its happened to many people here before. You are far from the only victim. You would have known that if you are indeed a regluar poster here.

I really appreciate your response although you like other guys are still insinuating I'm making this up. But I understand I figured I might get some negative responses when I submit the post with a new account. I just didn't expect every poster to call me a liar. But it's okay.

Now could you please explain to me how they got hold of my account info based on prior stories? Thanks a lot.

There are a lot of ways of doing it. The most common are:

1. you a fake email saying something happened and that you have to sign into your neteller account. They set up a fake page and steal your passwords before redirecting you into the real site. (i.e. u must agree to the new terms so sign in now)

2. they somehow got a trojan or other keylogging into your system and stole your pass. This can be done without you ever knowing.

3. you are on a wireless connection and they broke the encryption and stole you passwords.

and probably a few that I missed

1. This sort of phishing never happened to me.

2. This is possible although I do scan my laptop with anti-spyware sw and anti-virus sw on a regular basis. The thing is though, I never type in my neteller account ID or secure ID. I always copy&paste them from the neteller email. Of course the hacker could have taken a screenshot of the email or somehow gotten hold of the clipboard content.

3. I stopped using wireless LAN about a year ago. Since then I have never used any sort of wireless network. Not even once.

I certainly think that what you describe could have happened. The logic of posting this thread with a new 2+2 alias escapes me, though. What is the advantage?

As far as this sort of thing happening to "lots of people", the only case that I remember reading about on here was last autumn, some woman in an airport, I think. It certainly does not happen often. Good luck.

What kind of money are we talking about here?

As to why Neteller didn't call you, I'm curious, have they called you previously to verify withdrawals? I had an account there for several years and never have received a call from them.

Do you let your browser keep your password, ID, and account number? Do you have a SO/roommate who might muck with your PC? I can gaurnetee you if my wife had the first clue how to run this computer and found my Neteller bookmark she'd be looking for a way to empty the account for a shopping spree.

Re: Neteller Accnt Hacked!!!

We just went thru an exercise on this forum wherein a new poster claimed a poker site closed his account and accused him of fraud.

Several posters immediately declared the story to either be trolling or a cheater who was caught.

Neither of those were true, and according to the thread (and thanks to the support of several less cranky 2+2 posters) the player received answers from Absolute and was found to be clean. His account was reopened and his money returned.

The simple fact is that Neteller and Paypal, etc. account logins are susceptible to thefts just like other monetary management systems.

Hopefully you caught this withdrawal before it completely cleared so Neteller can handle this.

There are a few poker sites HQed in Costa Rica I think -- is it possible you made a big transfer or deposit which you forgot about? Or maybe someone used your computer and found your account number and number code to make a deposit in a poker site under a different account login?

If this is true, That's my best guess...someone got your Neteller numbers, deposited into a poker site for a new username, and dumped the chips to another player.

You probably have to be insanely persistent on this to get anywhere. Because you came here to sound the alarm, you owe it to this forum to update us.

If the thief was attempting to move money from checking to neteller then he was doing it from your PC. Either sitting in front of it or through some backdoor program. Neteller would have frozen the account had the transaction came from another ip or pc.

1. Inform Neteller & let them know you need as much info as possible because you are going to do the following:

2. Call the FBI and let them know you have had money stolen from an offshore account.

3. Call local authorities in Isle of Man

4. Call local authorities in Costa Rica

5. Bug the ever living crap out of neteller every other hour until they find your money and reverse the transaction.

No I didn't deposit at a new site recently. The a*s*shole even moved a bunch of money from my BANK ACCOUNT to Neteller using InstaCash. I never use InstaCash coz it charges a hefty fee. So it couldn't be me doing it by accident.

As someone noted, someone was either using your PC or has remote access enabled to your desktop. Look back at all the neteller accounts that have been frozen when someone accessed their bank from another computer.

Wow, are you sure about this?

I use my laptop exclusively to move money from my checking account to neteller. And get this, I NEVER leave my laptop on when I'm not using it coz this POS DELL overheats like a mothafucka. In other words, when my laptop is on, I'm always staring at it.

Ok, whatever. You at least owe it to us to tell us who you are in the end. Unless you are WackoJacko.

If your account was hacked, where did the $$$ go to? Another account, a poker site, etc.? Every Neteller transaction I do is kept in a log on their system. Every penny is accounted for. So, you should know where it went to! Even with a hacked acc. you still know where it went.

Secondly, are you using any tools to remember your password(s)? mozzila/IE have built in support for this. I suggest you disable it.

Thirdly, a hacked party/empire/etc. account contains your Neteller account number in the cashout area. This however does no give a PIN. It'd take up to 1000000 (000000-999999) tries to figure out yer pin.

There's always going to be fraud committed when it comes to money. So I wouldn't be surprised if Neteller gets their share.

As an individual, I just take the proper precautions to safe guard my account and then go on with life and not overly worry about it.

If or when it affects me one day, then I'll deal with it as it comes. That's all you can really do.

Do you use the same password for all your accounts? eg neteller, email, poker sites etc? Be careful not to use the same userID and password at internet websites as your email account. It makes it easy to 'hack' your email account and get all the info they want.

Have you ever given your neteller account info out to anyone?... For instance a rakeback affiliate. Never give out the secure ID

I'm not sure what is classified as an unusual IP address, but I have never had any problems accessing/making transactions with my Neteller account from home or work, which are different IP addresses. And I've never had to talk with anyone from Neteller about it. So I'm not so sure the account had to be accessed through his PC.

Not true. It seems that some online merchants store your secure ID which basically means they can do transactions without your input at all.

Wouldn't surprise me if this was the case here. A bad casino/pokerroom screwing an ex-customer.

It goes without saying that when I found out my secure ID wasn't as safe as I thought it would be, I changed it. Now (with my casinowhoring days in the past) only a few pokersites know it.
