Best rock/pop musician who never sang?

Whom do you all consider to be the most talented/renowned rock/pop band member who rarely or never sang?

Even better if the nominated musician is also considered a talented songwriter.

Tom Morello is good, but he's not the best. I would have to think for the best.

Jimmy Page? Is this along the lines of what you're looking for?

Pretty much...basically, someone who was well-known as an amazing guitarist, or keyboardist, etc., but just could not sing (assuming it is true that Page couldn't sing).

That was actually my thought, although I am curious as to whom others might nominate.

Page came to mind first.

How much (if at all) did Richards sing?

I was never a Stones fan, but is Richards really in the same league as Santana and Page?

Guitar - absolutely not

Songwriter - certainly needs to be considered for their place in history

Just instrument-playing musicians, with songwriting skills as a bonus for tie-breakers.

Well, with Eric Clapton out of the way, I really can't see how this award doesn't go to Milli Vanilli.

Also Tom Scholz.

Perhaps you can be less specific. Do you not know who they are? Or are you questioning my selection of them?

Sure. I don't really know if you can call it singing with the Foo Fighters, too.

Anyway, he's probably the best "mainstream" drummer of the past 15 years.

Pete Townsend of the Who.

He occasionally sang, usually backup.

Wrote the vast majority of their songs, including 2 rock operas. Considered one of the fathers of punk music. One of the first to use the power chord. The first to destroy his instruments.

Wrote the line "hope I die before I get old"

Its not even close.
