NYC poker raid?
Tonight as I was leaving a NYC club, I overheard the owners/managers nervously calling around to check out a rumor that had been phoned in to them that another club in the city had been raided. Anyone hear anything about this?

Re: NYC poker raid?
The word is 14 and 72 are closed, and others are shutting as a precaution.
|
Re: NYC poker raid?
I was in 72. Raided at 11:30. Players searched, IDed and let go, took about 1.5 hours.
Nothing bigger than red was left on the tables, but I'm guessing the chips are merely souviners. The officers were for the most part quite civil and nothing bad happened. Anyone else confirm that a club was hit? Was sat hit? topout |
Re: NYC poker raid?
I was at 14 when it was raided around 11:00 p.m. Players ID'd and released, employees arrested.
|
Re: NYC poker raid?
Well the long-awaited crackdown has begun. That sucks.

Re: NYC poker raid?

Re: NYC poker raid?
Just tried 72nd (Players Club - I hadn't known about the raid, obviously) where I was greeted by a cop. I assured him I was not an employee and was on my way. Called Ace Point on e. side and got no answer.

[/ QUOTE ] whoa. that's why i've steered clear for a few months. was it a calm scene or did it get hectic? [/ QUOTE ] Hectic only for a few seconds when the cops first burst in. I was in the back room, and the first thing I saw and heard was a crowd of 30 people running into the room and someone yelling something about "He's got a gun!" Once I saw it was the police I relaxed instantly, and after that the place was like the waiting room at the DMV. |
Re: NYC poker raid?
every employee present was arrested? has 14 ever been raided before?

Re: NYC poker raid?
Drove by 14 in the late evening (around 12:30) there were about 7 undercover cop cars double parked outside and guys in NYPD jackets standing by the entrance...pooping on the party...

Re: NYC poker raid?
I was playing at 14th st. They searched us, took our photographs, and checked our ID. One player who didn't have ID got arrested. About 20 employees got arrested.
I had $650 on the table. After I was initially searched, I tried stuffing my green chips into my wallet. After 2 hours they started letting people go. They said "If you take chips with you, YOU WILL GET LOCKED UP." So I got rid of the chips. Then they just let me walk out. I could have kept them. gg playstation. |
Re: NYC poker raid?
This Blog details what took place during the Brooklyn raid earlier this year. Everyone got off, all charges were dropped and (oddly) they re-opened again shortly.
What concerns me is described in the article, the police's possession of all computers, and therefore the identification of the players who attend the games. Does anyone from back in the Mayfair/Diamond Club days know if there were any resulting IRS complications for the players? Sorry for those of you who were at the clubs when it took place, I was planning on heading over to 14th street but my back hurt so I decided to go home instead. First time I've ever considered back pain to be lucky. Brian - I hope this doesn't affect your career in any way shape or form, I am mostly concerned for your well being right now. RB: it will be one long weekend down in AC TT [img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] |

[/ QUOTE ] No, they were pretty clear that we should leave the chips on the table and not touch them or bring them with us. I assume my money is gone. Some guys in the 5/10 NL had $5000+ on the table. |

Re: NYC poker raid?
Players do not violate NY law by playing.
|
Re: NYC poker raid?
But still, there are various tax issues, and it's probably not the best thing to leak out about people. I'm sure there are some employers, etc that would frown on illegal gambling.

Re: NYC poker raid?
I don't know whether it's illegal not to carry ID, but if you're present when a raid occurs and can't identify yourself the police certainly can detain you.

Re: NYC poker raid?
phew...
i was at the PS playing 1-2NL. i busted out early and left at 10pm. i'm never happy to lose in poker but for once, boy, am i glad that happened... craziness. didn't have my PS ID either, so i could have been one of those players who got cuffed... sucks though. i am gonna miss that place... maybe its a good thing. i live way too close to it... |

My assumption is that IDs were checked so that the police could check whether there were outstanding warrants against any of them and to make sure they were not people that were otherwise known to be employees or owners of the club... if someone didn't have an ID it was possible that they were trying to hide their identity, so the police could take them in and check them out... my assumption is that the player without ID was released quickly (assuming he wasn't a wanted criminal). |
Re: NYC poker raid?
this is probably true... in all the excitement of this crazy news, i wasnt reading too closely. i did have proper ID, so i guess it would have been all good, but i lucked out and missed the whole debacle...
i wonder what sort of implications this will have for nyc cash game players. do you think there will me a massive amount of home games popping up all over the 5 burroughs? will people hole up in their homes playing online or mass exodus to foxwooods and AC on the weekends? |
