Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
Thought it might be interesting to start this topic as without doubt I am sure everyone will have a different opinion
My top 3 are: 1) Calling small pairs in early position LEVEL 3 onwards - End up either having to fold pre flop or miss flop. 2) Overplaying AK/AQ - Usual scenario where you miss a flop and bet it, walking into a made hand or simply calling an all in pre flop early. 3) Playing low suited aces early - Just waisting too many bets playing these, once in a while might make 2 pair or a flush but anything is very dodgy and costs me a lot of chips I occasionally still do all of the above 3 doh Would be really interested to hear everyone elses |
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
i make tons of money doing #1.
|
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
yea I don't think #1 is really a mistake depending on your situation. In the first two rounds i will limp from any position with small pocket pairs.
|
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
Have edited the post lads, from level 3 onwards with small pocket pairs. I see where u are coming from early on with blind so small. What are your top 3's?

Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
This is a very basic top 3 for the general SNG population. I think you'd compile a completly different list if you're talking about just 2+2ers
1) playing too many hands pre-flop 2) chasing with drawing hands 3) see #1 |
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
1. Chasing
2. Chasing 3. Chasing |
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
1. Failing to make an effort to put opponent on a hand and acting on the basis of the strength of my hand alone.
2. Assuming that all my opponents are morons (actually I think that should be morans). Particularly levels 1-3. 3. Assuming that all my opponents are genii. Particularly levels 4-6. |
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
Do you think pushing when not necessary should be on this list for 2+2'ers? Or not pushing when you should with any 2?
|
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
I'm not sure, but for me it's most likely the later.
|
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
I really have to agree with number 1 and thinking about it I would have that in my top 3
|
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
my biggest mistakes are?
1)early:making up excuses to call with my medium pair on the flop 2)middle: bluffing too much. 3) late on: pushing too much(every hand) ITM |
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
1. Assuming that my opponents have a functioning brain.
2. Not playing attention to stack sizes. 3. Fancy play syndrome. |
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
1. Not pushing enough.
2. Pushing too much. 3. Getting in too few games per day. |
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
1. playing big pots with a top pair/gk which is weak.
2. getting too aggressive too early. 3. i dunno, not keeping it gangster? |
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
Wonder why no one has mentioned Suited connectors...i fing hate SCs in SNGs
|
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
1. folding too much
2. raising too much 3. calling too much |
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
Would have to say, being over aggressive in pot's that I'm in. Just because I'm in a pot doesn't mean I have to win it.
|
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
1) Not betting TPx out of position
2) Betting TPx out of position 3) Not encouraging Button and his friends to just steal my damn blinds and be done with it |
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
wow i just busted from the super monday cuz I put dude on a weak ace and since i was holding 67s and had played it the same way i would play ak or aq up til there i figured i would continue to do so. well i got called by a5 and was done. so i'd have to say that fits 1. and 3. of your list.
|
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
1. Not playing better postflop
2. Not defending my blinds 3. Getting ITM with too few chips |
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
My biggest mistake used to be playing too loosely pre-flop. I have tightened up considerably. Now my biggest leaks are:
1) Chasing. 2) Trying to bluff morons. 3) Overplaying draws. |
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
1) Forgetting to bluff and be aggressive after a few losses.
2) Calling big value bets on the river when I know I'm beat. 3) Bluffing so often that my opponents realize that they can trap me anytime they want. |

3. Whining about bad beats when Citanul or Irieguy have had a bad day
2. Calling your opponent a stupid f'in retard only to discover they are your favorite poster on 2+2 1. Entering a limit tournament by accident. Lori |
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
Used to be:
1. Not being a luckbox. 2. Looking at my results 3. Chatting with TheUsher and Raptor on AIM while playing... Are now: 1. Getting 'fancy' 2. Coming up with a solid plan for my hand and then deviating for no actual reason 3. Chatting with TheUsher and Raptor on AIM after playing... Yugoslav |

Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
I tend to call people dumb ass fish when I know they are 2+2ers and they play poorly or make an insane suckout on me.
|
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
Heh, here I am trying to maintain the composure to type "gg" whether I win or lose and always make fish feel welcome at the table and happy to be there, and all my 2+2 idols are busy telling those same fish to cram it up their butt sideways.
*sigh* I think I'm in a losing battle here. I wonder if the metamorphosis is inevitable? |
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
I guarantee that on the one occasion where you type something incredibly nasty because you've taken one beat too many that half of the table will say "You're blarg aren't you?"

Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
1. Calling with +chip EV hands that are - $EV when I'm a small chipleader.
2. Go into push/fold mode a tad too early. 3. TV/AIM/work/reading while 4 tabling. |
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
1. Not a leak
2. Not a leak w/ AK...do not play AQ and you solve the second half of this leak. 3. Horrible, hemoraging leak: drawing hands are bad. my 3 are: 1. Not spiking enough 4 outers 2. Not spiking enough 3 outers and my worst leak 3. Not spiking enough 2 outers. Andre |
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
i think for the supbro? crowd the biggest leaks are:
a. not stealing enough on the bubble or b. stealing too much on the bubble at least from the HH's i've reviewed that is...most here have a pretty solid early game (again, only from HH's i've seen). Andre |
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
I don't think I ever will, but if I did, yeah, that sounds about like a fun way to put the perfect cherry on top of a bad luck streak.

Then after a few rounds I say f@#$ this I'm raising and re-raising everything as I'd rather play NLHE. One time this worked in my favor and I won. |
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
most of the problems you guys are talking about arent really problems that i have
1) i dont play too many hands preflop early 2) dont htink i push too much 3) dont think i push too little 4) i dont overplay drawing hands i ocassinally push with them cuz i belive its the right thing to do. 5) i can lay down TPTK with no problem 6)i can lay down KK QQ JJ with not much problem altho i do over play them at time ect ect... my problem i think i have right now *including some fundimental flaws in my game (why because i cant beat the 5.5 games yet), 1) i have a hard time getting value from my hands.. not sure how much i should bet with good hands like KK with 3 limpers in the pot if blinds are t20 i would bet about t100 so i think im over betting my hands and scaring out customers.. maybe i should slow play some AA big hands late in a sit n go bubble time to try players.. im not sure how to do that. lots of the time im happy with the chips in the pot. any suggestions? |
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
Well, the idea about varying your play is always a good one. You don't want to train people to know that whenever you bet X number of chips, it means you hold QQ and up, and whenever you bet Y number of chips, it's only AK.
In the Party lower limit games, the stacks are so shallow and you see so few people repeatedly that you don't have to do that all that much, but I know you play at 1000 stack games, so it's probably more important for you to be seen varying your play than it is for me over at Party. |
Re: Top 3 basic SNG mistakes
Mainly trying to run over the table too often, and when it's unneccesary.
