The Rock is in play

The Rock rules.

http://i4.photobucket.com/albums/y14...t/P5230007.jpg

Important lesson learned... a rock & a kill don't work so great together, when the rock was in play during a kill hand, the rock became a mandatory live call.

A mandatory live call is amazingly funny. You aren't allowed to play with a rock w/o the dude tho TT, so you'll need to fly him in before your next game .

Re: The Rock is in play

An interesting question just popped into my head.

In a rock game, would it be best to sit on the immediate left of the loosest player in the game. This would give you position on the player you should be making the most money off of (assuming loose = bad here) Or, would you want to play on his immediate right. That would give you the button more often since the loose player will win a larger # of pots than anyone else on the table.

zokbarjazz 05-24-2005 07:40 PM

Re: The Rock is in play

since the rock only comes into play ~once/orbit (when the rock is UTG), i don't think this would make up for having position on the bad player every hand.

Or since the rock is in play only when the holder is UTG, is the best position three seats to his right, so the Hero always is on the button when the loose player has his forced straddle...

My opinion its always best to be to the left of this player. With a carefully placed bet and a tight table image, the hero might be able to buy the button

PS: Al - industrial size rubber bands please... it makes the rock make a better "thunk" when it hits the table, yet still gives it a bit of bounce off the felt. club: :;)

Used in a fixed limit game, the rock is one big bet, tied up with a rubber band. You introduce it into the game as a straddle bet. Then, whoever wins the pot and gets the rock must straddle with it when the are UTG.

Except in some Tunica games. I have read that if the player with the Rock wishes to leave the game, it gets placed into the next pot as a bonus. I would assume the rock in these games is house money, hence the policy. Can anyone confirm?

The rock has been described differently than I was thinking. Those who responded my question thought of it differently too. I'm not sure where they got this rock description from.

The "rock" I was thinking of was this. Whoever wins a pot, posts the blinds in the next hand. Therefore, you could theoretically fold every hand pre-flop except AA and never lose a dollar (because you would never post a blind). Also, stealing blinds is useless since you would just end up posting those blinds on the very next hand.

So, given this definition, would you want to be on the left or right of the loosest/worst player in the game?

The rock as I have played it with the Dude (and a gaggle of 2+2ers) some months ago was a forced UTG straddle. It was not at all as you described it, do you have a link to an article that describes the rock you are familiar with Dynasty?

Re: The Rock is in play

The game Mason described ("leave-it-in rock game") was a variant on the normal rock game, where the rock was straddled every hand by whoever won the last hand, instead of waiting for utg position. As Mason points out, this effectively becomes another blind. There were still normal blinds in addition to the any-position straddle each hand.

It's in the second. The winner of any hand posts the big blind and the small blind is posted to the left of the dealer as normal. The BB can be tied up in a bunch and even replaced by a rock because it may as well just sit in the pot. It ends up being a limit game with only a small blind posted.

With the blinds being dropped to 33% of today's typical structure, should someone play 33% of their usual number of hands?

You don't... you just do it yourself by using your own winning personality (assuming you have one ) but putting it in play and encouraging your opponents to play with it. Worse case scenario somebody wins the rock and eats it, meaning they either leave with it, refuse to play with it, or dismantle it. Such is the risk of introducing the rock.

What I find ironic about the rock is it induces action from players who are typically tight. Thats why I brought it to the table on Monday, our game had become rather tight and the rock was essentially KY to lube up the game again.

Re: The Rock is in play

The rock is common in the Horseshoe Tunica 20-40 game. As someone else asked, the rock is NOT house money. All players at the table have to agree to playing with the rock. After all, the rock is a mandatory straddle, and some players don't straddle. Most of the time a few players throw in money to make a rock. In the 20-40 game I've seen 8 players throw in $5 each to make the rock when the game starts. They draw for the button and the first person UTG has the rock. Easy enough.

Three points:
1) I love the rock and hate rock-eaters.
2) The rock is also excellent in no-limit and pot-limit.
3) I need to go to Tunica.
