100 years ago, he\'d a shot ya!

This is a story to tell my grandkids on day.

There is this little asian (LA) guy at my 20-40 table here in Harrah's New Orleans.

He's stuck a lot. He tries to pull an angle on me after getting cards and trying not to post behind the button. (floor comes over to settle it, he was called by the dealer)
After he posts, I complete in the SB, the BB checks, then dealer scoops all the money in to the pot, THEN the LA says wait he wants to raise. I say no way, call the floor back. Floor says no raise. I flop top pair with my 97, where he 4bets me on the flop and bets the turn and river with his A2o no pair and I scoop the pot.

About 4 hands later, he gets up and walks over to me and smashes his full beer over my head.

While I'm sitting there in shock he's apprehended and arrested.

I'm so lucky. only several small minor cuts on my ear and head, and one big lump. My head hurts and my neck is killing me.

The EMT, while cleaning out my head says, "Hey be thankful, 100 years ago he'd a shot ya!"

Id lift one of those beverage tables and try and get a swing in before security came. Unless u were knocked out.

Either way press full charges possible.

Great post. I don't get to laugh that hard that often. That's hysterical to read.

It reminded me of metal shop class in high school where, after a few words were exchanged, one kid cracks the other kid over the crown of his forehead with a long file. Broke it into pieces. He's standing there holding the wooden handle with this crazed look in his eyes as the other kid turns to me with blood pouring down his face. One of those WTF? moments in life. Funny.

Re: 100 years ago, he\'d a shot ya!

One never knows, I suppose, when one is dealing with a wacko. I've been a a table when, after he gave a ruling which a house player berating him about, a floorman cold-cocked the house player and the whole table turned over. While they were fighting, virtually everybody else in the casino was yelling "kill him" and running over to loot the chips on the floor.

Lots of poeple in a casino are low lifes to begin with Then losing brings out the worst in them, and it's plenty bad to begin with. Good to hear you're not seriously hurt.

Well its funny now, but it wasn't so amusing at the time.

But the line the EMT gave me really did make me laugh, while trying not to drip on my shirt.

The reality is I got very lucky.

But knowing that there are players out there...even typically quiet and mild-mannered asians (probably the last group of people I'd expect someone like this from) means we all need to be careful. The odd part here is he and I really didn't even have a heated exchange.

So thank god he didn't have a gun, or a knife.

wow dude...just wow...

first off, im glad to hear your alright. i've heard of people getting smashed in the head w/ a beer bottle (one of my high school acquaintances) and having to get many a stitch to sew it back up. im sure everybody has told you ice ice ice ice. oh...and rest ...

but this guy must have been stewing in his own little world of hate to wait 4 hands and THEN come ovre and konk you. definately want to prosecute this guy for battery.

now did you get a concussion and fall off the chair?

well at least you do now have a story that will remain good for all time.

Glad to hear you are alright after that - pretty scary. I was playing at the Peppermill in Reno several years ago when the poker room was by the front desk (it was a totally enclosed room) and had a player jump over the table at me. He actually went between myself and the dealer, and hit his head on the wall, splitting his eyebrow open. It was pretty funny. Security hauled him away.

That was ballstothewall of that asian guy to do. With that in mind you shouldnt press charges. Instead you should give him some respect for handling it like a hardass.

"he and I really didn't even have a heated exchange."

Maybe those quiet guys who are silently stewing are the guys to watch out for. And it seems to me that the guys who try to pull angles all the time, as you described this guy, might be prime suspects.

I'm usually one of the first guys to try to be funny or make a joke out of things, but I was really despressed reading your post. Thankful you're OK, but what an ugly thing to read and think about. Your mentioning of a gun or knife makes me think that, with the influx of new players in cardrooms it is, unfortunately, only a matter of time before a gun or knife does indeed come into play. What passes for security where I play, one of the biggest cardrooms (if not the biggest) in the world, is virtually non-existent. Snakehead and I have privately discussed one player in particular who we feel is borderline (or worse) psychotic and how likely it might be that something very bad happens one day with him involved.

Re: 100 years ago, he\'d a shot ya!

I agree totally with what you are saying Andy. I really feel it's just a matter of time before somebody goes postal at the Commerce and takes out a half dozen people. Bad people are just that - and when they're desperate and have lost the last money that they had (or worse, have borrowed), then you have a recipe for disaster.

in all my years i have only seen a few get shot or stabbed. usually they just hit someone as they dont want to get barred for life. remember they are degenerate gamblers first off. so i wouldnt worry too much.

i would make a claim against the casino as they were being crappy to him so they deserve the suit.

He didn't get a comp to the buffet, so what? They could've shown more class about it, but they don't have any kind of obligation to do so.

Re: 100 years ago, he\'d a shot ya!

they may very well be negligent here. letting someone have a bottle at the table or not policing the game when trouble was brewing. etc. a business open to the public has an obligation to take the proper measures to protect its customers.
but to have someone get hurt and then ignore the situation is wrong and should be punished.

I agree, but there's nothing about what Sobe said that would makes it appear like they ignored the situation.

If someone wants to randomly get up from a table and suddenly smash a glass over someone's head, or a chair, or whatever, I can't see how Harrah's can do anything to prevent it. They could be serving all alcohol in plastic cups, but so could the Bellagio and the rest of the casinos around the country.

If anyone thought the card room was unsafe, they're free to take action beforehand, or just stay home. Using some unlikely tragedy after the fact to place blame on someone barely involved is being results oriented.

Re: 100 years ago, he\'d a shot ya!

SoBeDude can make a premises liability claim against Harrah's and he will win almost automatically. Whether Harrah's was or wasn't negligent is irrelevant. This is a strict liability tort, which means they have no excuses.

Only a FEW shot or stabbed?

To be honest about being naieve, I never thought about hit happening at all.

I'm not the biggest guy, but I am 6'1" and in shape. I've always felt I could handle myself ok. But to be honest, that blow to the head incapacitated me. If he had decided to take another shot at me with the remains of that broken bottle, I couldn't have stopped him.

Thankfully he was more interested in trying to get away than finish me off. But what if he wasn't?

This has opened my eyes. (thankfully more than it opened my head)

You should definitely push them for something. I don't think it was really Harrah's fault, but from a PR perspective, I would think it would be in their best interest to do something.

That's a matter of experience. Believe it or not, if you get hit enough times, you get used to it. You can lift weights until you can't put your arms down to your sides but you'll always be at a disadvantage against someone who knows how to take (or dodge) a punch.
