Famous/Infamous Railbirds of Atlantic City.
I lived in Atlantic City for 17 months before moving back to my parents house the beginning of 2005. To those familiar with atlantic city, is it just me or are the poker rooms teeming with railbirds and bums. I'm assuming unless you are a very social guy, look like a mark (sucker), or are very familiar with the atlantic city scene, you will know some railbirds yourself.
1. Carlos Mendez. (Mexican that looks like a conartist) He was a long time bum at Tropicana until Borgata opened up. Now he plays/lives there. Possibly the biggest scum of AC poker rooms. I don't know anyone that owes more money to poker players than he does. I don't know how he is still alive. In the past year, he had a nice run from winning several tournaments consecutively and ran up his money in the 40-80 game. Notorious for playing over his Bankroll. 2. Patches. (Big, African American) Don't get me wrong, i love patches, but this guy needs to chill w/ being a fair-weather friend. He is a real nice guy actually, but the thing that bothers me is that he has such a hustler's mentality. He is probably the most famous AC regular because he has alot of friends and people are always willing to help him out. I know I have. 3. Tim Wilson. (Caucasian, FAT, balding, sometimes w/ beard) He's a goofy guy that always wears simpson shirts and loves to smoke weed. He has no shame as he will sleep at empty poker tables and sit behind you and sweat you, waiting for you to scoop a pot so he can get a bone. 4. Leo August. (African American, tall, glasses, big) Another player i know pretty well. I don't know anyone that can turn $20 into 10K in less than a week. He has taken small money and ran it up to 10-20K at LEAST 8 times in the past year. Excellent tournament player, so I'm pretty sure you guys might have seen him looking for a backer/sponser for tournaments when he is broke. Actually, all the railbirds listed do this all the time, but Leo is actually a very good "horse". Not even a month ago, he went from broke to winning 2 tournaments at the taj, playing 40-80 then 80-160, had over 20K, then lost it all playing 80-160 and heads up NL w/ some fish. I believe he's broke again, but you'll see him in action soon. 5. Pat (Lanky, Deaf, Mute, Goofy) - Ha, if you guys play low limit, you will know him. he's the goofy guy that is deaf and mute and loves to drink beer. His table manners are HILARIOUS. He always gets banned or kicked out, but always manages to get back in. I think the whole pokerroom staff is sympathetic towards him. Man, what a character. Never buy a room off him, i bought a room off him and when i went in, there was two guys already in there. HE SOLD THE ROOM TWICE! Now that's business! I asked for my money back, but he was broke. When i played in the same game as him, I gave him a bad beat w/ bottom pair, open end straight draw and snapped his QQ when the bottom pair paired up. He took a note pad, vigorously jotted a message...it was an essay, but long story short, he said we are even. So there's my top 5. There are ALOT more and i'm sure alot of people don't know their names, so be descriptive. OH YEAH, you can't forget FISH. He's the Etheopian looking guy that caters to the Pit players at the taj and borgata. He gets honorable mention... |
Re: Famous/Infamous Railbirds of Atlantic City.
i know 1,2, and i think 5 for sure.
i never had a problem with 1 and 2 although one of them was constantly asking to buy some points from me. i wanted to punch 5 in the mouth one day |
Re: Famous/Infamous Railbirds of Atlantic City.
Patches is cool. He was a dealer in NYC for a while as well. He shouldn't be on a list like this.

Re: Famous/Infamous Railbirds of Atlantic City.
theres this guy i see all the time whos rarely in a game, seems like hes always sweating somebody. anywho, hes got dirty blondish hair, mustahce, kinda on the heavyset side. usually has a tan membersonly kinda jacket on. one time he fell asleep at an empty table in a chair at the trop, and people were throwing garbage at him, that was pretty funny.

Re: Famous/Infamous Railbirds of Atlantic City.
Patches is a well known tool and angle shooter in NYC.

Re: Famous/Infamous Railbirds of Atlantic City.
interesting read...
What about 7th Street? He is an older black gentleman with glasses and a beard. He plays 10/20 and 15/30 stud at the Taj, but actually I see him more often just hanging out or playing chess than actually playing cards. He was sitting at an empty table on the high limit side once, and I walked up and sat next to him. He was actually doing a physics calculus problem on a napkin, and there were other napkins scattered around him with various calculus and linear algebra work jotted down on them. Someone told me he used to be a college professor and is a genius, though obviously a bit of a recluse. |

Re: Famous/Infamous Railbirds of Atlantic City.
Wow, I feel like a degenerate since I know EVERY ONE of these people except one. I don't know Carlos' background story, but he is a tough player at the Borg 40 game. Everyone else you pretty much hit the nail on the head. The key to being a regular in AC... NEVER EVER EVER LEND MONEY TO ANYONE. EVER.

As far as if they were any good, I'm guessing someone who does calculus problems for fun has a decent chance at also being good at chess. I only saw it twice maybe, so its by no means a regular thing. |
Re: Famous/Infamous Railbirds of Atlantic City.
Prodigy,
Awesome post. I know all of the players on your list. Carlos now plays in the $40 and $80 games at the Borgata. He once borrowed $5.00 from me and never payed me back. Now I just bum a smoke from him. I have seen Patches around the room since I started playing. I do not have a problem with him at all. I know Timmy very well. He made a lot of money off of a slot machine scam, and is still bust. Go figure. I hardly ever see Leo play, however I always see him seating the games. Pat does crack me up. You left out guys like Kenny Action, Flip and Boris. Although these guys play and I would not consider them railbird. Very entertaining post. |

His name is Bobby. He parts his hair to the side. He used to play $15-$30 stud for a living but went bust. |
Re: Famous/Infamous Railbirds of Atlantic City.
I think Carlos once told me he was from PR. He surely doesn't look Mexican to me, nor does the group he runs with.
Carlos never borrowed money from me, but I heard stories. Ditto with Patches. Lots of stories, and not just from Mike, lol. Funny how I have such a different viewpoint of AC than so many others. Having been around the poker scene for ten years (mostly through my Mom's eyes) in Vegas, I found AC a very refreshing, decent place. I was amazed that the difference between AC poker and Vegas poker (pre-poker boom). I didn't want to leave, but we had to move west. I still think back on those days, and I definitely prefer east coast poker to anything out here (Vegas and Cali poker). Lots of people whine and complain about what a cesspool AC it, how grungy AC locals are, how inconsistent Foxwoods rules are, but I think either they haven't played extensively around the country, or they just have some kind of rose colored glasses on, when they think of other places, because I have never been as happy with the poker world as I was when I was out east. Granted, I haven't played in AC since July 2003, so my info might be dated, but I sure wish I could go back. Felicia www.felicialee.net |
Re: Famous/Infamous Railbirds of Atlantic City.
Is FISH the little black dude who walks around the Taj poker room in the blue Dallas Cowboy jacket ? I've never seen him sit down and play. Strange fellow.

They should still be around in the archives. Good observation, though! |
Re: Famous/Infamous Railbirds of Atlantic City.
Felicia,
You did make a lot of "friends" in your time here. Zeus (Jesus) plays at the Borgata now. |
Re: Famous/Infamous Railbirds of Atlantic City.
At the Borgata, Who is the grey haired guy with the Borgata jacket that walks around like he owns the place.. He does play but it looks like he does more hanging around then playing..?
|
Re: Famous/Infamous Railbirds of Atlantic City.
Strange. I'm in AC a lot but I can't really put my finger on any of the people you guys are talking about.
What about Rocco? Anyone who plays at the Borg must know Rocco. And the tallish asian guy with the thin mustache and no beard? Don't know his name.. Always wearing a blue windbreakerish/membors only type jacket and always playing 40 or 80 HE. And I mean, /always/. Same jacket, same game, any time of any day. |
Re: Famous/Infamous Railbirds of Atlantic City.
Rocco is far from a broke/railbird. He wins ALOT of money in the big NL games at Borg and is very skilled.

Rocco isnt a rail bird. He plays in the 10-25 no limit game whenever hes in town. The poster posted about the "players" who do more loitering then playing. |
Re: Famous/Infamous Railbirds of Atlantic City.
Sorry, I should have made clear. I'm just naming regulars I know of. Rocco is in no way broke or a hustler. He is an excellent player and one of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet at a poker table.

Re: Famous/Infamous Railbirds of Atlantic City.
That's Antonio Di'Borgata, he does own the place.
Actually, I dunno who he is. |
Re: Famous/Infamous Railbirds of Atlantic City.
The deaf guy asked me for money when i was winning big at the hi limit blackjack tables at borgata.
|
Re: Famous/Infamous Railbirds of Atlantic City.
Does anyone know the old guy at the tropicana with the mustache who's always wearing sunglasses and a yankees hat? I've seen him every single time i've played there, he's even sat in on a few 2-4 games when I was there last summer.

Re: Famous/Infamous Railbirds of Atlantic City.
Doesn't patches deal at the club that shall not be named up here in nyc? Am I thinking of the same guy? (He's a nice dude)
|
Re: Famous/Infamous Railbirds of Atlantic City.
Ahh memories... this thread reminds me of summer weekends in AC. Soon I will be there again, very soon. I am familar with everyone except for #3. Patches always seemed like an OK dude but I try not to get to know AC regulars too well.
Someone needs to make a thread about the best AC regulars. 2+2-ers excluded from consideration. |

Am I really a rail bird if?
I play the 20/40 a fair amount at TS, but I also watch it alot and study the players in the game usually standing behind near the dealer box, I usually stand back enough if the 1 and 9 seat are paranoid about me seeing there cards but sometimes when I am on the list for that game I watch that game for like 2 hours and then I am still waiting and I just leave....does this make me a railbird? Also I sweated alot of games when the tournys came up such as teh 50/100 and 10/20 NL

Re: Famous/Infamous Railbirds of Atlantic City.
Were you in AC a few weeks, maybe even 2-3 months ago, yell at Carols telling him how he is a huge bum?
Dave |
Re: Famous/Infamous Railbirds of Atlantic City.
Fonzi is sooo funny, and he has to be the worst 40-80 player ever.

Re: Famous/Infamous Railbirds of Atlantic City.
If you are talking about the kid in the 80 game all the time he is actully a really nice guy.
