A question about swings

I am looking for a little clarification on something. People frequently talk about swings, particularly that one must be prepared for a 200BB swing from time to time. My question is whether expected value taken into account? For instance, if I think I'm a 1BB/hr favorite and after 100 hours I'm down 50BB, is that a swing of 50 or 150?

Swings do not take EV into account.

It's a swing of 50. But swings don't take that long, they're much quicker.

Back of the line Chumpette.

I'm down 330BB ($4400) as of 3/1, 23K hands...

Ok ok I lied, I am up 78BB at 1/2 ($156) during that period. The $156 didn't really restore my BR though...

I came to within two big bets of moving up to 5/10 for the OIC. Then I dropped about 28, so now I'm 30 away. Do I win?

I am around -150BB. My current downswing has picked right up where the one I was on left off before I went away for three weeks. Still can't win with a set.

Anyway, I hope things turn around for you soon; I am sure it will.

Not close. I got to 5/10, fell all the way back to .5/1, got to 3/6, ran freakin' awesome, and I'll be back at .5/1 later this week. Goooooooooo me!

Why do you say swings don't take that long? I've heard that even pros have a losing month once in a while.

When a (good) pro has a losing month, it's usually the result of several swings; he might start the month off with a -200 BB downswing, rebound with a +250 upswing, and end it off with another -100 mini-downswing. There are obviously cases of downswings which last for hundreds or perhaps even thousands of game hours, but those are relatively rare for a good player.
