stuey movie (high roller)
i had bought this DVD from www.conjelco.com because i had heard about it for 3+ years now since it has been on the drawing board.
the day it came, someone had posted that the movie sucked so i have not bothered watching it. last night i watched it an LOVED it. don't listen to the naysayers. also, and this is not a spoiler, i had no clue who the 'guy' was in the motel room with him. i loved the ending. great dvd. buy it edit: hmm, i may have gotten it from amazon. that's was spouse tells me. check both |
Re: stuey movie (high roller)
I loved the movie too. I dont see what all the negative feedback was about. Yeah it couldve been better and it couldve involved more poker stategy scenes, but it was an indy movie and I dont see anybody else stepping up to the plate to make a movie about his life.

Re: stuey movie (high roller)
i tell you this. it was 1,000,000 times better than big blind, which had more poker content. big blind is horrible from beginning to end. at least high roller had a holywood feel to it. i did not miss the poker content because i am a poker player. maybe people who don't know who stuey is would hate this film. matter of fact, that's probably why it never had a theatrical release.
but still, glad to find other's that enjoyed it. i felt like i had to make this post as a public service announcement because i let it gather dust due to what i had heard from others. to all who have not seen it, give it a shot |
Re: stuey movie (high roller)
I thought it was good but not great. Loved the scenes with Mr. Miyagi..."Aaah Stuey-san..."
I was a bit disappointed with the ending though, I had it figured out by the second cut back to the hotel room. J |

not bad! i had a poster here who PM'd me and said that he had not really figured out who the guy was even after seeing it. i had no idea until the very last minute. then again, it was drinking a mountain dew at the time cuz my mouth was a bit dry.. wooo |
Re: stuey movie (high roller)
Who was the guy? I think I know, but now I am not sure....

Can you PM me too? I watched most of it but lost interest towards the end.
Thanks -Pete |
Re: stuey movie (high roller)
That movie was terrible. Terrible acting and directing. Terrible plot and music. I didn't know too much about Stu Ungar and wanted to see it too...

i didn't see it that way when i saw it but it makes more sense than an angel guess being a giant stuey fan caused my bias |
Re: stuey movie (high roller)
saw it sat night on stars and enjoyed it. Thought it was a mix between goodfellas, sapranos, and tilt. very mafia, but still good.

Re: stuey movie (high roller)
I didn't care for it. I was really excited when I bought it, but it seemed pretty bland to me.

Re: stuey movie (high roller)
I just rented it about two weeks ago and while it's slow at times it was thoroughly enjoyable, Stu was the man too bad all the poopy stuff that he let happen to him. Sorry if post was silly im a little drunk.
Hidden white text below: Yes Granny the Reaper makes more sense, I thought he was God when I watched it, same theme as the Angel, really the same damn difference just someone there to take him away, and how convenient hollywood had a camera into his mind so we could see his story as he told him to the SOUL COLLECTOR....eek scary |

Re: stuey movie (high roller)
It was an excellent movie, but I'm disappointed because it seemed to focus on the negatives of Stu more than the positives.

Re: stuey movie (high roller)
I also watched the movie and would give it the old "thumbs up".
Some misc. comments: 1) I watched it with a friend who, until 5 minutes before starting the movie, had no idea who Mr. Ungar was. I gave him a quick rundown (being careful to not spoil anything I thought mau be in the movie), we watched it, and he thought it was good. 2) I thought the music (soundtrack) selections were decent. The problem was that they went on too long. There was toomuch of a "music video" feel to those parts of the movie. 3) I thought the plot was a very fitting way to outline his life. Perhaps, it could have been a little more solid but was more than acceptable. 4) The biggest disapointment for me was that the film did not put much focus on the destructiveness of Mr. Ungar's well know drug habbits. I believe there was only one scene in which he was shown using and one other in which he had drugs but did not use them. Drugs were a huge part of his life and very much responsible for his untimely death. They should have been covered better in the film. All in all... I enjoyed it and will buy a copy for my collection. I would recommend it to anyone who can appreciate the art and recognize that for a lower budget film it is put together quite well. Cheers, deacsoft |
Re: stuey movie (high roller)
Ah thx granny, I've been waiting so long for this movie.
For the very few times I buy a DVD instead of downloading it I'll buy this one. |
Re: stuey movie (high roller)
I also thought the movie was good, but in no way would I call it great.
I've done a fair bit of research about Stu's life, simply because his abilities as a poker player have impressed me more than any other. In reading about him I found that many who were close to him, including his daughter, objected to much of what the movie portrayed. From wnat I understand his daughter's motivation to get involved in a book about her father was in an effort to set the story straight in some way. As for the movie itself, I think casting Michael Imperioli as Stu was 100% spot on. I think if they highlighted his poker career a bit more, like perhaps not ignoring his 2 WSOP wins in 1980 & 1981 completely, it would have added to the movie a great deal. At least the name Stu Ungar was elevated beyond the knowledge of poker hardcore, and for that I am grateful. |
Re: stuey movie (high roller)
Hi Granny,
What is the title of the movie? I seem to be tarded too, as I can't find it on Conjelco. Thanks Lawrence |
