Cell phone text messaging

Gay or okay? I can't decide, however I do it sometimes. Thoughts?

Re: Cell phone text messaging

It's incredibly gay.

pshreck 03-30-2005 02:14 AM

Re: Cell phone text messaging

My friend does it now as opposed to drunk dialing, and it has improved my life greatly.

I think its funny, but you would only really use it for a real situation if there is a reason you cant call, or they cant pick up a phone....

But then, why wouldnt you just leave a voice message?

Not gay, just pretty pointless.

Re: Cell phone text messaging

i use it a ton...for when im in meetings or class and so r others...we can make plans....cause we cant call each other while were in these classes/meetings. Plus if im runnin a few mins late...its sometimes easier for me just to text someone - ill be there in 10

Re: Cell phone text messaging

I don't even know how to do it on my phone.

I can receive text messages, and I do occasionally, but most of the time people just call.

All the different charges and formats make it really confusing.

Re: Cell phone text messaging

i may start just because people have caught onto my strategy of "never listen to your voice mail and just call people back." maybe it's a good way to say something and get a call back where they understand the basics.

It's a great way to pass time while playing poker live. you are at one table, buddy on the other side of the casino or other side of town or something....

Re: Cell phone text messaging

My phone is semi broken and as a result sometimes I don't even receive calls in the first place. Other times I get the calls but the phone doesn't ring or vibrate and its not silenced. Anyway the people that text me usually just text because they've figured this out and they know that even if they leave a voice mail I might not get it. They usually text: "CALL ME"

It's very good for casual convo's with people you don't really want to talk to on the phone, or if you just need to know or let someone know one specific thing.

What does whether other people thinking texting is gay or not have to do with your decision to do it anyway? If you find it useful in certain situations, then do it. If you don't, then don't. Who cares what other people think.

I text and get texted by some chicks. I still feel weird when one of my buddies does it. I'm getting used to it though I guess. I still reply with the shortest answer possible to dudes though.

Text messaging....

I didnt realize people over 17 did that unless they were in a rap video.

Yes, and lots of them.

FatLoser 03-30-2005 07:42 AM

Are you guys serious?!?

I can't believe most of the people in this thread never or seldom use SMS. Is the US really so far behind europe in cell phone use? I send at least 100+ messages every month and recieve about as many, most of the people here in sweden around my age, 23, (give or take 5 years) have similar numbers I would imagine.

Oh well, I guess you'll catch up in a few years. Btw, have you even heard about 3G-phones yet?

Oh, and regarding original post question. It's more than okay, it's great.

Re: Cell phone text messaging

I would text message a lot more if I had something like a blackberry or sidekick with the qwerty keyboards. but the problem with this is, having a sidekick would be gayer than sending text messages, so I'm SOL.

Yes we havent caught up on that 65% marginal tax rates for successful people either.....

What a shame.

Exactly, except I'm 18 but I'd say the same applies pretty much 5 years either way of my age. Well, the younger ones probably send less for financial reasons, but everyone texts lots.

Re: Cell phone text messaging

Text message is a god send. I am in constant contact with my girl with out actually having to get stuck talking to her for an endless period of time.

GF:Where are you?
LALDAAS:The bar
GF: when will you be home?
LALDAAS:Dunno
GF: ok im going to bed
LALDAAS:Good night.

Now if i had to go out into the fridgid cold to answer a call like this it would have lasted an easy 15 to 20 mins becuase my girl would ramble on and on forever.

This is just one perk!

I was just curious to what others thought. I do it every once in a while, but I was doing it last night and felt sorta stupid. Hence, the post. Don't worry, the OOT viewers aren't going to make me change what I do.

Implementing new technology into society has never been US's strength (although you make the best products).

In Norway (country of 4,5 million people) 3.618.000.000 of these messages are sent each year (804 pr person in average. It beats e-mail in the sense that you know your recipent will receive it. It beats calling in the way that you don't disturb the receiver. All-in-all the most efficient way to conduct a lot of business.

I use it all the time, get 500/month on my plan. Its easier and less intrusive, especially when somebody is at work. They can just answer at their leisure.

Re: Are you guys serious?!?

like 99% of mobile phone owners in the us don't use text messaging. a lot of it has to do with the fact that basic plans don't have a lot of uses of them and people don't want to pay 10 5 cents for it or whatever.

The service providers are laughing all the way to the bank thanks to SMS. Sending a regular old VM is so much cheaper.

Good for sending info, like the address of a party or something.

Good for times when you don't want to actually talk to someone but just pass on info, ie. "be there in 15". Or "playing poker tonight at 11 if interested".

But I hate talking on the phone.

I can't believe no one has answered concerts/clubs. I must send 50 txts a night on friday and saturday if i'm at a loud club. I also use them for people I don't want to talk to but need to tell something. But for me, the most important is when I'm somewhere loud and need to communicate with others who are somewhere loud. I'm not in school any more so I can just stand up and leave work to talk on the phone so that doesn't apply.

Re: Are you guys serious?!?

In the US I basically never used it, but now that I am studying in Spain were cell phone use is a lot more expensive, I send a decent number. But it still pisses me off when someone gets me invovled in a 5 message sequence that a 20 second phone call could have easily accomplished.

And people who are constantly texting all day are losers.
