Can anyone compare the new JB Paulsons to the NJ Martini Club?
Im debating if I should go with the Mardi Gra from Holempokerchips or if I should go with the Paulson. Considering price will be nearly the same, which way should I go. I really like the non-denom aspect of the Mardi Gras but I like the Paulson aspect of the Paulson.
Do these chips even compare? |

[/ QUOTE ] I have samples of both here, and in my opinion the NJ Martini Club clays are better. Quality wise they are both very nice chips, but looks wise, for the most part, I like the NJs better. There are some chip colors/combinations on the Paulsons that I REALLY love, but overall I lean towards the NJs. (Actually I like the "Nevada" mold and colors the best of all 3) |
Re: Can anyone compare the new JB Paulsons to the NJ Martini Club?
the jb's are nicer, by a longshot. the NJ chips have a vinyl feel that never goes away as far as i can tell. they're hard and plasticky. and the martini's have that god-forsaken martini glass on them. i, for one, am happy to be out of the 90's, why would i want chips that haven't escaped?
the JB's aren't the best design either, but the feel of the paulsons destroys the NJ's. considering how similar the prices are, i don't know why people would ever buy NJ clay instead of paulson. |
Re: Can anyone compare the new JB Paulsons to the NJ Martini Club?
From what I can tell it seems like the NJ's & Mardigras (by BlueChip) won't attract as much crud over time. That is a plus. I have a sample set of paulsons and have barely messed with them and they are all gunked up.
That being sed the softer feel of the paulson is nice too. Gotta give a little to get a little i guess. |
Re: Can anyone compare the new JB Paulsons to the NJ Martini Club?
yeah i noticed when people were posting "wear" pics in another thread, it seems the new paulsons get unusually filthy.

[/ QUOTE ] Um..the NJ Clays do not feel hard and plasticky at all. And especially not after they have been oiled/used for a bit. And a vinyl feel? The inlay has a textured feel to it like many Paulsons do..just not the JB Paulsons which have a smooth feel, which I happen to hate. The feel and sound of the Paulson JB is decent, but they gunk up VERY quickly. I have been shuffling the samples I have here mixed with the NJ Martini and Nevada mold chips and the Paulsons are extremely dirty and gunky. That is mostly due to their softer nature. The Paulsons are nice, but not for me. To call the NJ Clays junk or "plasticky" is just flat out wrong. They are VERY nice chips. You also comment on the martini glass. Well, not everyone thinks the same way you do. Also, if he wishes to wait a little while, he can pick up the Mardis Gras chips instead. Same mold as the Martini Club with a different inlay and diff colors. Don't let anyone tell you anything different. The NJ Clays are quality chips, there is NOTHING wrong with them. |
Re: Can anyone compare the new JB Paulsons to the NJ Martini Club?
i stand by my statements. calling my comments wrong doesn't make them so.
the JB's do get dirty easily, though. that's true. btw, the NJ clays feel nothing like any casino quality clay chip i've ever played with. they're more, how you say, plasticky? |

[/ QUOTE ] Calling your comments wrong based on the fact that you are heavily biased towards Paulson like almost everyone else here is perfectly fine. They are quality clay chips and do not feel plasticky at all. I have had samples of both of them here for over a week and have messed around with them non stop in that time. They feel fine. |
Re: Can anyone compare the new JB Paulsons to the NJ Martini Club?
over a week! well no wonder you know more than i do! i've played in a home game with NJ's for a year, and have had my samples for months.

Re: Can anyone compare the new JB Paulsons to the NJ Martini Club?
Looks and feel of chips are subjective. Both are good chips. Get samples and see what you like, it's worth it to spend 20 bucks now for a 1000 dollar investment.
But a couple of facts (at least I think they're facts): 1. Paulsons definitely get dirtier faster than NJ Clays 2. NJ Clays are 9g, Paulsons are 10g - some people like the lighter weight, others absolutely MUST HAVE the exact same weight as casinos (10g in most casinos) 3. Different denoms of NJ Clays can be slightly different thickness. In particular, the $25s seem to be slightly thinner than others. But the difference isn't huge. A stack of 20 may be different by 1/2 chip thickness. (There are pics and discussion of this on the other board). 4. Paulson > NJ Clays in terms of quality control. NJs often have warped chips and warped inlays . (but not too many, maybe 1% of chips or less, unknown if NJ will replace them for you but they might, also lots of discussion about this on the other board). 5. NJs seem more durable than Paulson (but we're likely talking about lasting 2 lifetimes vs 3 lifetimes, I doubt you'd have to replace either set anytime soon). P.S. For what it's worth, I also think the NJ Clays feel plasticy compared to Paulsons, which to me is most important and which is why I'm getting Paulsons. But do yourself a favor and get samples. |

[/ QUOTE ] It doesnt take much time for the chips to break in when they get shuffled an average of 4-6 hours a day. They do not feel plasticky, and I stand by my statement that they are great chips and that you are biased heavily towards Paulson. Nowhere did I ever state that the NJs were better then the Paulsons, just that I preferred them over the current Paulson mold. The Paulsons feel a bit better but if I were to buy a set tomorrow, it would be the NJs. As far as quality control, Paulson wins there I am sure. However, when I ordered my Desert Sands chips I asked about the policy of no exchanges. That policy does NOT apply to warped/cracked chips. It applies to edge spots not being even and the other general anomalies you see in clay chips. |
Re: Can anyone compare the new JB Paulsons to the NJ Martini Club?
I don't know that Jojo and the rest of the board is being "heavily biased" toward Paulson. I happen to share his opinion, and I don't think I'm being biased. I've shown my samples to a bunch of friends who play poker but have never heard of Paulson, and they also thought the NJ's felt kind of plasticky compared to the Paulsons ("bakelite" is another term used a lot to decribe NJ's when compared with Paulsons). To me, that makes Paulson's feel "better", but lots of people like NJ's better, and lots of people even like the feel of ceramic ChipCo's better. Getting your own samples is a must.

Re: Can anyone compare the new JB Paulsons to the NJ Martini Club?
Let me just say this about Paulsons getting dirty:
This is a function of their being new. I have a ton of pre-B&G Paulsons, most of which are in mint condition. If I take a stack of any 20 of them and spend a day shuffling them, at the end of the day, my fingers will be covered with whatever color those chips are. They shed some dust. By about the fifth day of shuffling, this is reduced to near zero, and after a couple of weeks, they shed little at all. Likewise, they quit dirtying each other, since the "dirty Paulson" syndrome we've seen well documented is the same dust that dirties your shuffling fingers. So, yeah, when they're new, they'll shed dust to a horrendous extent and that dust gets on other chips, making them dirty. After a fair bit of use (and maybe one cleaning), the problem essentially goes away. The Paulsons take on the same sort of character you see with casino Paulsons, albeit still a lot less worn than what you generally find in the casino. The Blue Chip samples I've broken in, on the other hand, don't seem to exhibit this characteristic. Then again, they're harder than Paulson chips, and never quite feel the same, even after broken in. Not that I mind the Blue Chips at all, but they are different in this regard. |
Re: Can anyone compare the new JB Paulsons to the NJ Martini Club?
Bottom Line the NJ colors are better (this of course is subjective to ones taste) but I belive most would agree.
I have a set of 300 of the new bonds 500 of the Nj clays and 500 of the old bonds. Feel wise the old bonds are superior Sound also goes to the old bonds with a very close second to the new bonds. Durability I would say the NJ clays would win hands down. Quality however (as in inlay placement and damaged chips) well Paulson walks away with this prize easily. I prefer the colors and the feel of the Old Bond chips over the other 2 sets but I wouldnt sell my Nj clay set either as I am very fond of the inlay and the color combos. I do however have a set of 300 of the new bond chips for sale 50 each denom except the white chip for $325 shipped. I dont need two sets with the same dam inlays now do I? Also another thing to consider, I dont know if you are dead set on the mardi gras chips but the Njs are on sale for 499 for a set of 500 wich is a dam good price if you ask me. Just thought id let you know. |

Re: Can anyone compare the new JB Paulsons to the NJ Martini Club?
it's true; i'm heavily biased towards paulson. what that means to me, however, is that in my experience, which is a fair amount, i've concluded that the NJ's aren't close in quality to paulsons. in that respect, i've developed a bias towards the paulsons.
what does that mean, though, except that i've made an informed judgement? |
Re: Can anyone compare the new JB Paulsons to the NJ Martini Club?
I have never played with the NJ Martini's, but the NJ clays have two advantages over the JB Paulsons:
-- The label fits the mold -- The feel (texture) of the label is better. The label on the JB's has a (dare I say it) plasticky feel. IMO the feel, sound, and weight of the JB's is better. |

Do the Martini Club chips cpmpare exactly to the Blue Chips JB's? Are they the same feel?

Re: Can anyone compare the new JB Paulsons to the NJ Martini Club?
To be fair, I have samples of Martini Club, NJ clay, and New Paulson JB.
I like them all, and whichever you think is prettier and you want the most is the best one. |

My only argument was that the NJs did not feel plasticky to me. That is the only point I was making. Nowhere did I state that the NJs were on par quality wise with the Paulsons...looks, feel, sound or otherwise. Edit : In the first post I used the word "Better" but it means better to ME. I am not a fan of the way the new paulson mold is, the small inlay with the large space or the smooth feel of the inlay. So those factors really drove me more towards liking the NJ clays more. |

Well, I got a sample of the NJ's and in my opinion they dont even come close to the feel of Paulson. The Paulson feel better, sound better, stack better, and even shuffle better. The NJ chip does look real nice but I think Im going to hold out for the Paulson chips eventhough they have denoms. Thanks for everyone help!
