NEWS FLASH. NEW PAULSON MOLD IMMINENT
I'm told again today, that we were given wrong information. The new word from Trademark Poker is that the new Paulson chips will have a NEW MOLD, not a bigger inlay. Here is the quote:
[ QUOTE ] First, I gave you some wrong information. We are having the mold changed and not increasing the size of the inlay. We are having the mold redone to accomodate the inlay not increase the size of the inlayt. [/ QUOTE ] New mold, bigger inlay, I don't care. As long as it's one or the other. Ten |
Re: NEWS FLASH. NEW PAULSON MOLD EMINANT
This seems kind of crazy. Isn't it easier to put in the bigger inlay than retool the die for the chips?

Re: NEWS FLASH. NEW PAULSON MOLD EMINANT
Actually, I was kinda excited for the bigger inlay to fill all the space the had around samples like the James Bond chip.
Also, I'd prefer them to take "paulson chips" off the outside and just have the H&C. IF they want to be different than casinos, just have 4 at each end North South East West. |

This seems kind of crazy. Isn't it easier to put in the bigger inlay than retool the die for the chips? [/ QUOTE ] This goes back to my original theory (once the JB's came out) that NO ONE seemed to agree with. My theory is that the most important thing to Paulson is that the only inlay allowed on the home market is the STANDARD (small) size. They are making a new mold because they understand that it looks a little funny having a small inlay with all that empty space left before the edge of the texture starts. I have believed that they will be making a new mold since day one. I got completely slammed on TH-P.com about my theory being wrong. Only yesterday was I convinced I was wrong when I heard from TWO sources that they will be allowing a grand inlay, and no mold change. Then today, a flip-flop. I guess we'll know once we see the photos, right? Either way, we're ordering these chips. Ten |
Re: NEWS FLASH. NEW PAULSON MOLD EMINANT
Hey hey!
Fantastic news! (I just hope they use the concentric circles per your recent mock up) I was actually a bit disappointed with the news of a Grand Inlay. Inlay shapes are nice, but shaped Grands would be, well... kinda unusual. As far as I'm concerned, things are just perfect so far! Let's take the time and do this right. Gimme concentric circles! (and white $1 chips) |
Re: NEWS FLASH. NEW PAULSON MOLD EMINANT
Definitely.
The older H&C chips with the standard inlay have a concentric circle groove (albeit outboard of the H&Cs), and I think it definitely is a positive addition to the mold. And, I'm with you, Ten. Whichever way it comes, I'm buying. (But I still kinda liked your artwork better with the backgrounds.) |

ok, i am a retard..
what are concentric circles? |

It just seems idiotic to have "Paulson Chips". Any damn idiot can see that it's a chip. That's like Chevy putting "Chevrolet Car" on the back of their vehicles. |

This mold has concentric circles

Re: NEWS FLASH. NEW PAULSON MOLD IMMINENT
This is odd, as the new mold (as imagined) will require them to ADD material to the die (since the mold is a negative of the chip)...being a design engineer who has gone through this before, I know this to be costly and highly undesirable, especially in a high-capcity, multi-cavity mold as they are surely using. Seems odd to me? Unless the actual chips look different than the pictures, I have not got samples yet.

Re: NEWS FLASH. NEW PAULSON MOLD EMINANT
in reality its just one circle on the outside added. the inner circle is there because of the recess for the inlay, as it is in all chips.
btw, do we really need Cairo at the bottom? i would much rather see the eagle moved down and Cairo removed, it would look better imo. and, the name Cairo wanst used in ancient times. |

We may not have done it very well, but the inner circle is meant to be a seperate ring from the inlay edge. [ QUOTE ] btw, do we really need Cairo at the bottom? i would much rather see the eagle moved down and Cairo removed, it would look better imo. and, the name Cairo wanst used in ancient times. [/ QUOTE ] I built this set to resemble the classic design of a real casino, albeit with a bit more flair. Most classic inlays that you see have the casino name prominant somehere at the center or top. They have a small simple logo, and the denomination. Then they almost always have the location at the bottom. I thought it would be best this way. Ten |
Re: NEWS FLASH. NEW PAULSON MOLD EMINANT
Two or more circles of (optionally) different sizes with the same center points are concentric.
|
Re: NEWS FLASH. NEW PAULSON MOLD IMMINENT
Wow, who would have thought those 2 circles would have made all the difference... I'm blown away. If the actual chips are like the mockup it would be awesome.

Re: NEWS FLASH. NEW PAULSON MOLD IMMINENT
is it possible that paulson already had these dies (the new ones) manufactured?

Re: NEWS FLASH. NEW PAULSON MOLD IMMINENT
I'm pretty sure the pictures of the molds that Ten is using are modified versions of the James Bond Paulson pics. Ten (or one of his artists) just made the outer rim bigger based on what Trademark says the new mold will look like. He didn't add the concentric circles until a couple days ago. No one knows for sure what the new mold looks like, but it's very unlikely they'll have the concentric circles. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong...

yea, you might be right. I guess it'd be best to ask the artist who mocked that up, Johnny5.

Re: NEWS FLASH. NEW PAULSON MOLD IMMINENT
Yes, the concentric circles are a key part of the standard Paulson Top Hat & Cane mold, as shown by duma above (if that's what they're using as the basis for the "new" home mold).
To me, the concentric circles add a classy look to chips, and they also IMO improve the feel and the stackability. Some of the classic chip designs have/had circles etched in the mold. Here are a few samples (pardon the picture quality) -- #3 is the traditional Paulson TH&C, standard inlay size (and even scalloped!) #2 is a traditional Horsehead (ASM) -- one of the best molds ever #4 is the NJ Martini Club, which doesn't have a complete circle but still feels good and #1 is the All-In Chip that most people hate, but they have two terrific circles that make this feel pretty good Edit: TEMPORARY IMAGE HOST PROBLEM -- PICTURE WILL BE BACK SOON http://img.villagephotos.com/p/2005-...centric-4a.jpg - - tomb New Orleans Birthplace of Poker |
Re: NEWS FLASH. NEW PAULSON MOLD IMMINENT
Duma,
I'm not sure that those pics validate your point, as 1 is hot stamped, and the other has a shaped inlay. I don't have any standard inlay old style/casino Paulson handy & the grand/giant chip molds are different, but it is my understanding that there are actually 2 concentric circles, not 1 as you stated. Can anyone confirm this? The style of the circles was based primarily on these pics of the old Paulson JBs: http://img169.exs.cx/img169/4403/cdic25cl12qm.jpg http://img169.exs.cx/img169/8162/cdic5tex13rm.jpg http://img144.exs.cx/img144/8792/cdic25tex18jj.jpg http://img46.exs.cx/img46/4206/hc12vb.jpg I think the new mockups reflect this fairly well, regardless whether the inner circle is a distinct channel like the outer circle, or if it is just the start of the inlay recessed area. Note: The circles are not likely to appear on the Paulson home chips anyway, but we can hope! J5 |
Re: NEWS FLASH. NEW PAULSON MOLD IMMINENT
ya those bonds look to not have a recessed center. but on chips that do, its just one outer circle, as u can see in the pics. my guess is that the new paulson mold will have a recessed center.
