Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
Phillips, the new Arieh?
|
Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
You do realize that PP's tournament was BEFORE Arieh's WSOP, right?
*edit - nevermind. I realize what you're talking about now. |
Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
What did he do?
|
Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
I don't get it... what happened?
|
Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
Funny you should say this.
From Paul Phillips blog site; "I see that next wednesday they're running the season three bike episode. So let's get this out of the way: I fear the announcers (mike sexton in particular) are going to be very unkind to me. Here is what happened: I was busted by doyle brunson and took 7th in the event, aka "the TV bubble." I came to watch the final table (which is hard to do when you've come that close and missed) and on the way in I was inspired to buy one of doyle's books and study it while in the audience. They filmed me doing this and I'm fairly sure they'll use that footage. By the time it got to be heads-up between lee watkinson and doyle, I had had a couple drinks and I'm sure that impaired my judgment a little beyond the usual impairment. When doyle doubled through lee to even the chip count, I jokingly offered the book to linda johnson to give to lee. She declined but one of the WPT guys also standing there encouraged me to go up to the stage and do it myself. So, as usual not thinking enough about the cameras, I impulsively did as he suggested. I tapped lee on the shoulder and pretended to show him a passage, then went back to my seat. When I got back a chorus of angry and unhappy words were pouring out from lee's supporters, who were sitting right behind me, and it was right about then that I realized that I shouldn't have done it and especially shouldn't have done it at that moment. I was sure lee could handle it no problem but I didn't think about how it'd be perceived by others. This is the downside of "dancing like nobody's watching", that sometimes people ARE watching and they may not see things the way you intended them. Lee being the ridiculously nice guy that he is actually sought ME out the next day via email to apologize for not being quick enough on the uptake to really go along with the joke. That made me feel somewhat better inasmuch as it confirmed my belief that lee would have no problem with it; unfortunately that's not going to help with anyone else. If it doesn't bother lee I can't see why anyone else would need to take exception to it... but I'm sure they will anyway. If they want to brutalize me it'll be very, very easy. The guy who took 7th and just missed making the TV table goes out on stage at the most inappropriate possible moment. What an attention whore! In reality it only happened because I WASN'T thinking about the cameras, not because I was. But as with all things television, I'm at the mercy of if and how the producers choose to use the footage, and what they choose to say. When I was at the commerce for the WPT event, josh ariah and I played a marathon 24-hour chinese poker session. I told him he could relax, soon I'll be the guy everyone hates. Obviously I can't really pass poor josh on that stage with this one incident, but maybe if I keep trying... I always have a good time playing poker with josh. I hope he can shake off the crap he's been carrying since the WSOP, because there are so many players who deserve the negativity more richly than he does. Not that I'm volunteering myself." |
Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
How the %&*@ can anybody say PP is funny? Complete and total faaaaag. I'm so happy that PH got the better of him after all that [censored] talkin.

Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
That was nothing, give me a break.

Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
Didn't he rape Cris Brown's daughter?
Shane PS. I'm KIDDING JUST KIDDING. |

[/ QUOTE ] Idiotic -- Paul Phillips is a dot.com dork [ QUOTE ] [/ QUOTE ] My guess is that most of the voters for this category would answer any question about Paul Phillips in a similar manner. Paul's mistake wasn't giving the book to Lee, it was getting so rich while still so young. |

That was nothing, give me a break. [/ QUOTE ] Agreed. Especially seeing the actual TV footage, it came off as funny. They have had Antonio Esfandiari out there doing card tricks and other antics of the like. It was funny to me, to those that watched it with me this evening, and the only thing that would concern me is whether Lee appreciated it or not, because if the guy getting joked on doesn't like it, well, then it's out of place. But, apparently he was cool about it, so.... bravo. Barron Vangor Toth www.BarronVangorToth.com |

You guys take things too seriously.

Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
At first I hated him, just seemed like a guy that you would love to hate. But man, the guy is funny. Just go through his posts here, he'll grow on you. And the Phil Hellmuth jersey pic was just fantastic.

Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
I thought it was funny. Better than listening to VVP.
|
Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
it was kind of funny
i'm sure that if i was lee i wouldn't be appreciating it after doubling doyle up and having to deal with a super aggressive legend with an equal amount of chips. |
Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
i found it childishly funny. at the time of watching it i thought that it was slightly in bad taste by PP, as it was a terrible hand for lee and he might have been morning over his decisions, only to be the butt of someone's joke. lee obviously didn't have a problem with it though so it was all in good taste. paul could have chosen a better time for it though, in a smaller pot. either way, it was good tv.

Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
No big deal at all, IMO.
What annoyed me is the overuse of flashing lights, scrolling web links, and graphics, that while fancier, are now harder than ever to see. Frank |
Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
I voted for harmless...
when I first watched WPT, I really disliked Paul because he seemed such the intellectual-cocky-got-lucky-but-very-smart-and-knows-it guy. I have to say I root for him now... kind of same thing with Mark Cuban... a decent guy who is living a sweet life... |

I found it a bit odd but when they said that they were friends I assumed Paul knew Lee would take it like a champ. [/ QUOTE ] Yep. I mean, watching on television, we can't feel the energy in the room. Seems there was some decent, upbeat energy, and Paul had had a few drinks...whatever. I think the "poker wave" was a much more egregious transgression, and nobody's excoriating Esfandiari. I also think the Poker Fratboy routine from the crowd (which included Negreanu) at the first Ladies' Night was also much more unseemly. Phillips also seems to really regret it, having had a chance to install a little context into the memory. I say give him a pass. |
Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
His antics were completely bush. If you had a huge chip lead on a player like Doyle Brunson, how would you feel about doubling him up? I'm guessing you'd be a little upset. Then, some jerk comes out of the audience with a "How to" poker book and brings it up to you. If I were Lee, I'd have punched PP right in the face. COMLETELY BUSH PAUL!

Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
Relax.
|
Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
I cannot believe how seriously some of you take this stuff...a HUGE part of poker is interpersonal interaction.....I feel so bad for you if you do get lucky enough to make one of these final tables and have to face a talkative guy like Men Nguyen.
PP's stunt was in good fun, with a guy he seems to know. BFD! |
Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
actually read about this on his blog. He had the book in the audience and one of the WPT crew told him to go up there. He said he wasn't thinking about the cameras or he wouldn't have done it. Lee Watkinson is a friend of his, and actually apologized to him later for not going along with the joke, because that is what it was...a joke. Bad timing though....there was a lot of money at stake, but Lee was quoted as saying it didn't bother him or affect his play at all...so fair enough i guess.
|
Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
I think the only opinion that matters is that of Lee Watkinson. I don't know how he feels about it, but if he doesn't care, why should anybody else?
|
Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
It was cheesy and his timing was horrible, Lee was still trying to count out all the chips he lost. But compared to others antics, this was nothing - LET IT GO.

Best graphic I've seen in a long time.
These posts always make me wonder the same thing: Do any of you guys have any immediate plans to have those sticks surgically removed from your backsides? |
Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
a) You are an idiot.
b) How would you feel if you just lost $1,000,000 pot to a legend of poker? c) You are an idiot. |
Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
So, I guess the answer would be, "no," that you have absolutely no plans to have the stick removed from your arse?
As I suspected. |

[ QUOTE ]
b) How would you feel if you just lost $1,000,000 pot to a legend of poker? [/ QUOTE ] Bad. Fortunately it was only a 1M chip pot. I'd also feel a little worse losing to a non-legend of poker. |
Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
Yes, but he lost a $1,000,000 first place prize. The chip count ended up evening out after the hand, so if he won the hand(which he couldn't due, but that is beside the point), he'd win. How would you feel if you made a horrendous sp?mistake that cost you 1/2 your chips and some idiot buddy comes out of the crowd to mock you? That extra 500,000 for first might not mean squat to PP(because he's a multi-millionaire), but to Lee I'm sure it would mean a lot more.
PS. Next time you are in Lee's position, I'll come out of the stands and shake a book in your face. What will you do then? |
Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
100% tottally harmless and in jest. this is poker, a game played in casinos full of much more annoyances then a drunk kid with a book (who was sitting at the table with all of them not too long before). If it were mid backswing at a golf tournament, you'd have an arguement. but it wasn't.
i can't believe this even warrants discussion. |
Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
You're all making the mistake of not taking the situation into context. This wasn't your Thursday night home game or playing the 2/4's at the Bicycle. This was head's up for over one million dollars. The hand was especially crucial because Doyle gets a huge momentum swing and just evened out the chip count. I'm not saying Paul's actions warrant his execution, just it was the wrong time to mock Lee. How would Joe Awada feel had Paul showed him the book after Lee just knocked him out. Tell me that please. I'm done posting in this thread, I'm off to watch TILT.

Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
If a friend of mine did that to me I really wouldn't care, and would likely laugh it off. If it was someone I didn't know so well, I might be a bit pissed off however. |
Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
The WPT encourages this sort of thing. Like letting Phil "The Unabomber" Laak practically crawl onto the dealer's lap begging for a card. I wouldn't object if one of the dealers kicked him in the teeth.
It looks like Paul got conned into doing the book stunt, but there is no evidence it bothered Watkinson. If Paul didn't know Lee, I doubt he would have done it. Anyway no harm no foul. I have nothing against Phil Laak (also an accomplished backgammon player), but suppose you were a family member of one of the Unabomber's victims? Would you find his schtick that amusing? Frank |

Re: Paul Phillips antics on WPT - Legends of Poker
I think Paul knows me well enough to know that this little joke wouldn't bother me. In fact after the tournament some of my buddies told me that they were very angry and had cussed him out, I had to ask "what for" as I had no idea what they were talking about.
Paul is one of the wittiest, most fun guys I have ever played with and I, like Doyle, was sorry to see him bubble out before the final table. |
