On a brighter note: Who here drinks less because of online poker?

I dont like to drink while I play poker. Ive found that my frequency and durration of drinking has dropped off a lot since starting to play on line. It has only been a week though so I might change my mind.

I guess poker has brought a brief moment of meaning into my life.

Given the huge oppurtunity cost for getting drunk, my drinking dropped off rapidly and substantially when i started playing online poker. It never recovered.

Huh.

I have a collection of maybe 20 bottles of various single malt scotches, and one bottle of Jonnie Walker Blue.

I rarely drink any of it. Poker doesn't change things one way or the other.

To drink, I have to have little else planned (since I don't wanna get behind the wheel), I have to be in a fairly good mood, and fairly alert. Otherwise, not interested.

I'm much more likely to have a frozen sissy drink when I'm out for dinner with friends. About the only time I actually get drunk is the celebratory sh**face that I treat myself to after a particularly good winning session at a B&M.

Sadly, those are less common than I'd like to admit.

this has been huge for me. i've gone from going out drinking huge amounts 4 nights a week. to only twice a week b/c of poker. also at $50-$80/night to go out plus the $50/night in winnings, that's like $800/month right there. not to mention the +EV from no hangovers the next day.

I deffinatly drink less, and smoke alot less weed too.
Poker has tought me about money management also.
It has made me re-evaluate my priorities in life, for the better. Not to mention my wife loves to play as much as I do, so I have nothing but great things to say about poker.

But to answer the posted question, yes, I drink considerably less booze!! And that is a good thing.

I sure as hell should drink less when I play online. The point is slowly being driven home to me as I've had several sessions where I was drinking earlier in the evening, started playing some online poker, and lost money playing like a drunken maniac.

I need to remember to use play money when I feel the itch to play when drunk.

This is a really funny read if you replace "drinking"
with "thinking". LOL

I smoked some reefer and after hanging out and stuff, I played some poker, luckily I went on a rush but today I looked over the couple hundred of hands I played and I found I could have made alot more money (ie flopped stone nuts, and I raise UTG into a field of 8).

Substance abuse is only -EV.

I think that weed and poker can mix quite nicely. I find that I play quite well when high, probably just a little bit worse than when sober. As for drinking and playing I do it, but I know I am not even close to as good as when sober. To answer the actual question though I don't drink less, but that is mainly because I really don't want to allow poker to cut into my drinking time. For anyone in college: poker<<<drinking.

It has. Instead of going down to the pub in weeknihgts, I sit in front of the monitor and play.

On the subject of replacing bad habits, I saw an article in Vanity Fair, about how Poker is taking over Hollywood. It was saying that Poker has now replaced the hard drugs of the 80's for Hollywood stars.

I'm in college. IF I'm in a serious mode of playing and want to make some cash it definitely cuts into time I would normally spend drinking, but as the OP said I do smoke on occassion. I find that it doesn't affect me much, if at all, and sometimes I think it even helps me concentrate. I have no scientific studies to back this up, but just from my own experiences and opinion.

Speaking as someone who spent a few years working at a small private college, I am somewhat encouraged that there's something that young males can do to socialize that doesn't involve getting poopie-faced.

Of course, it does have addiction potential, which does seem to be the key, but still, maybe we can look forward to fewer deaths?

Oh yeah. I forgot about string betting.
