New chip design...plus introduction

First off...I would like to introduce myself. I have been reading the board for quite some time, on and off. I used to play poker full time, before there was this huge boom. Once the boom started, I thought poker became too mainstream so I stopped playing. Now, I just sit in with the local guys once or twice a month.

I used to host games and tournaments, as well. I had blackjack, roulette, craps, and poker going. Everything is basically in storage. I just revamped one of my poker tables from a 10 person table to a 5 person table (plus the dealer spot). Recently a bunch of guys have been wanting to play regular games. I have custom chips from pc.com. I have had them since about the middle of 2000. They were well used about 5 nights a week.

However, I thought it was time for a change. So I just did a new design for the new labels I would like to have printed up for my chips. I have contacted Jason about getting them printed up. Let me know what you guys think about the design. I toyed with many different designs over the past few weeks. I finally decided on these. Check out the link: New Chips

All positive feedback is appreciated. (Anything negative will be hung out to dry...)

I like the chips (not as crazy about the graphics though the idea is cool)....where are you getting tophat and cane chips?

Re: New chip design...plus introduction

Is the fact that you don't like the design just your personal taste? Expand upon that. I had a ton of great ideas, but many of them are hard to do...such as a different shape to the look. Rather than it looking round, matching the chip color, then having a white center that is 6 sided, or having ridges on the edges. However, it was just too hard to really match the exact color of the chips...even with the help of Paulson's brochure.

I just wanted something familiar, but still different than the "run of the mill" casino-influenced inserts.

As for the chips...I bought hundreds upon hundreds of Paulsons years ago, and have kept them in storage. I figured that I would pull some out and make a decent set for a small home game. (500-600)

i think he means that he liked the idea of putting presidents on them as a form of money, but doesn't really like the way they came out. that's the way i feel about them anyway.. cool idea, just didn't come out well. sorry if this is negative.

Dead Presidents is very cool as a theme, and I love the backs. My only negative comment is the typeface - maybe something more "currency-like".

SugarV, I agree with this. I like the theme idea, and ther design is "almost there" you know what I mean? I suggest you show what you have so far to Jason (and Lynbark too) and see what they come up with. Both are great label designers.

Hey Sugarv, this is Jason. Send me the images and let me work with them for a bit and let me see what I can come up with. I think the design is cool but the fonts need some work.

Re: New chip design...plus introduction

The backs are perfect... I wouldn't touch them.

The fronts, on the other hand, need a little work.
<ul type="square">[*]The font... I think since you are going with the currency theme, perhaps someting that matches. Maybe like this:

http://image1.myfonts.com/image1/tex...135ea55e36.png
[*]The portraits are good, but for some reason they don't quite look right. First off... the Washington portrait is shoulders and head, while the rest are just heads. Also, the "heads" seem to be cropped a little tight... I might increase the cropping a little.
Just some thoughts... I really like the theme.

Re: New chip design...plus introduction

Sorry I didn't get specific before...

I agree with what has been said to this point about font, head size, etc...

A couple of other observations...

Some of the heads look squished... as if they got skewed or distorted when sized. (Hamilton on the 10 is the most obvious)

The shading to match the chip works very well with the exception of the 5. Any way to lighten it up any? Just seems too dark.

Did you mock any of these up with out the shading? The color of cash is so lovely, it might be just as well to leave it alone.

I'd love to se a 100 and maybe a 500 (there is a 500 bill though I don't think they are in circulation any longer)

I think the problems mentioned with Washington looking so different from the others is caused by the fact that all the other bills have been updated and now use the larger graphic of the pres....maybe finding and using the old smaller graphics would give more consistency....

the idea rocks! I think they just need some fine tuning....

Re: New chip design...plus introduction

Cool design idea, perhaps using a more bold money-ish type font (like the other post mentioned) for the denoms? It looks a little skinny for such a bold design.

The fronts - same thing, and again the fonts, I don't really like a large amount of text (like you have) on the image itself, perhaps put the image in the middle, then a border, then the text? Makes it easier to read and altogether more pleasing to look at.

-----

On an aside, I know you want to have something personal on your chips (and if you have a bunch, hats off to ya) - but does anyone also cringe at the thought of putting paper stickers on paulsons? =)

Dang I could have used that at Xmas. Gave the m-i-l a 'gift certificate' for man-hours of landscaping from the mrs and her sibs. I spent WAY too much time in drawing program messing around.

I have to say, that looks pretty good to me.

That looks great! I rather see those on chips instead of labels! I think the words for the denoms aren't needed since the numerical value is already there.

According to the US Treasury, there's also the $5,000 bill with a portrait of James Madison, the $10,000 bill with a portrait of Salmon P. Chase, and the $100,000 currency note bearing a portrait of Woodrow Wilson.

But it adds to the 'currancy theme' since its more representative of our bills.

I too think they look pretty damn good. Nice work.

Re: New chip design...plus introduction

I was just thinking about that as I was placing that image in photoshop.
I thought "damn, I would want a $25 chip, not $20"
and "500 would be damn hard to write"

so I guess it would be best to leave the text off. But for 1, 5, 10, 20, 50 it does complete the image. Beyond that it would get too busy and crowded.

Re: New chip design...plus introduction

You can take a little bit of liberty and make the Jackson $25 instead of $20.

Here's a complete list:

US $1 bill: GEORGE WASHINGTON
US $2 bill: THOMAS JEFFERSON
US $5 bill: ABRAHAM LINCOLN
US $10 bill: ALEXANDER HAMILTON
US $20 bill: ANDREW JACKSON
US $50 bill: ULYSSES S. GRANT
US $100 bill: BENJAMIN FRANKLIN
US $500 bill: WILLIAM MCKINLEY
US $1000 bill: GROVER CLEVELAND
US $5000 bill: JAMES MADISON
US $10,000 bill: SALMON P. CHASE
US $100,000 bill: WOODROW WILSON

Let me dig up some info on fractional currency.

Well...I'm glad that I posted these pictures before I got them printed up. As I said...these are just a rough mock up, and I have been playing around with various ideas for about a week.

On another note...I am not getting these printed on paper labels. They will be done on a special waterproof polyester that is used for casino chips. The labels are designed for laser printing, as well.

Those look really cool.

You might look at a 2004 chip from Hard Rock Casino for some other inspiration -- Abe Lincoln &amp; "In Rock We Trust." It's a black &amp; white inlay but it really looks great in person.

Our friends at olvegaschips.com have a larger picture:

Maybe you could do "In Poker We Trust"!
