try it with a splash. it doesn't make it weaker, but actally opens up the flavors. neat, you have a very concentrated, very intense flavor. with a splash, you have a less intense, but fuller flavor. with coke, you have a skirt on.

Virginia Gentleman

It's cheap shit but I defy you to try it in a blind taste test against Knob and see which you prefer. (I love Knob and Wild Turkey too I just think Virginia Gentleman is a hidden gem)

I have never tried this because I usually do straight shots, how much water and do you do this only when you are sipping it?

HDPM 01-25-2005 11:36 PM

Re: Any Whisky Drinkers out there??

Try it with a malt whisky. Your jameson is too boring and bland. So order a macallan or something somewhere and ask for it neat. Taste it straight. (Sip, not shooter) Then put a little water in and taste again. Maybe a spoonful of water. Or an evian capful or two. Not a whole lot. No ice. Sip the whisky. Repeat.

I think I remember hearing once that you can only get this stuff down south, but there's one called rebel yell that is quite good. Not sure if the thing about it only being down south is true, but I've never seen it in Wisconsin.

Rebel Yell is available a lot of places. If I can get it here it's widely available. Not as bad as I expected either.

Hmm, maybe you just can't find it anywhere in WI cuz people in WI know nothing about whiskey. They all just drink beer and brandy.

no, it shouldn't be in a shot glass.

[/ QUOTE ]oh okay I know what glass your talking about then. Whats your favorite average priced sippling whiskey?

HDPM 01-26-2005 12:06 AM

Re: Any Whisky Drinkers out there??

No average priced malts. My favorite average priced whiskey isn't a scotch but is Makers Mark bourbon, which calls itself "whisky" instead of the more usual "whiskey" used for American whiskies. The Scots might be offended, but oh well. It's ok to drink it on the rocks IMO, unlike a malt. Or as described. If you like Jameson try some malts next. Then try some bourbons too. Good malts tend to cost more. A lot of people suggest Glenlivet or Glenfiddich to start, but I never liked these when I first tried them. It took Macallan to convince me. If you like the Jameson you may also want to try Tyrconnel single malt Irish. It isn't too expensive.

hmmm Macallan sounds easy to remember, thanks HDPM.

Re: Any Whisky Drinkers out there??

Knob Creek is a decent bourbon; from the same distributor though you are better off going for Booker's, which weighs in with a 126-proof punch. It's smooth as bourbon can be, and not intollerable at around $60 a bottle.

As for scotch, I'm a big fan of Balvenie. It's a nice smooth highland that's pretty reasonably priced. Right now I keep a bottle of 15-yo single-cask on my desk for emergency access.

If you search the archives you will find a few threads about this subject...a few good reviews and comments are burried in there.

I agree - both suck, unless you want to fork over several hundred to get a vintage bottle. And even then they are just good, not anything to write home about.

Macallan is great stuff, but not exactly a cheap way to start drinking good scotch. But if you want to do it right, play an extra 3,000 hands this month and buy a bottle.

I just tried that two weeks ago, and was pretty impressed. I found knob creek a bit sweeter though, but it's still damn good.

Caol Isla 18 yr. is the best single malt ever. Bowmore Dawn and Talisker Cask Strength are both pretty good.

Re: Any Whisky Drinkers out there??

Whiskey is ruined when combined with anything else like, ice, water, vaginal soft drinks (coke), other toxins.

It has to be served cold as all Hell, though. How do we accomplish this? On the rocks, of course. The rocks are taken from your freezer. Do you see why? I'll let others elaborate.

Onaflag...........

PS...Jack is my choice right now, but if I plan to get annihilated, then Black Velvet would have to be the drink. I do not get a killer headache the next morning like with higher quality whiskeys.

That was my favourite as well, until i tried Ardbeg. Had the pleasure of tasting the 25yo, and it brought tears in my eyes (not from strenght:). But the 17yo is really worth trying.
