Rake in NL home game(s)
 

I play in a NL game that has a one 5$ blind structure. They rake 5$ for every $50 that goes in the pot. Is this pretty standard? Say it was a 1/2$ blind NL game, What amount do you think should be raked from each pot as to not be excessive? Also how many hands on average get dealt in an hour of these home games. Not that im thinking of starting a game or anything...

That is a HUGE rake. I would think that most people who have a home game with a rake pay less than they would in a casino. Our 2/5 NL home game gets raked a buck a hand, no flop no drop, plus tips. The dealer is ALWAYS happy.

too expensive, due to pot sizes being very unpredictable, perhaps you can consider a flat time charge instead.

So if the post is $300, they rake THIRTY dollars from it? That's way way too high for anywhere, especially a home game. You'll bleed your players dry.

You might be able to get away with 10% of the pot with a $5 MAX, but only if you provide food, drinks, security, a nice environemnt, good dealer, etc.

Something like $1-2 per pot (depending on size) + dealer tip is much more reasonable, and fair.

I explained the rake poorly. They ONLY rake if the pot gets to 50$ and then its 5$. And they dont rake more than 5$ a hand.

I have to agree. I understand asking for a small collection to help out with cards and stuff, but I dont like the idea of a rake.

If its a big game, that could get alittle attention from the PoPo. Instead of makeing a rake, just invite bad players.

a rake at a home game is illegal if the house is taking a cut. If its just for food and [censored], just make everyone poney up before the game starts. We do a jackpot at my home game, but that goes to the high hand of the night, and it works pretty well for our game. I would refuse to play a home game with a house rake though, completely absurd.

Yeah, a strictly home game should never have a rake. Now, a poker "club" is a different story. They usually charge an insane rake.

When I play in my home game at my place, its strictly to have fun. No rake. Ever. The money I win are my earnings, I think raking from your friends is a horrible thing to do.

While I used to live in Seattle where there are card rooms available to play in, this is no longer the case. I now live in Texas and poker is illegal (well raked games anyway). Because there are no card rooms, people who organize good home games with dealers and real tables are able to charge a rake and have people play. If there were real cardrooms, this would change the situation greatly.

Are you trying to make money or cover costs? We run about 2 games a week, tournament style at our place. We rake 5%of the entry fee from each player. This isn't enough to make money at our limits, but we use the money to buy cool stuff for the games like kem cards and such. This way we end up with fun poker stuff and friends dont feel like they are getting raked because they know they get to use the stuff all the time.

Raking home games is illegal in many states.

It is in mine (CA) and I'm not about to risk my successful home game trying to make a few bucks. As much as it would be nice for the host to be able to take a cut to cover expenses, it's just not worth it.

That being said, anything above 5% would be downright rude inmy opinion.

I've hosted a home game for years and, for the first year, we asked everyone for "donations" to cover beer, food, cards, etc. It just happened that, as time went on, people expected those things to be there but "forgot" to donate or flat out refused saying things like, "Well, I don't drink and I don't eat." We finally went to, after much thought, to a $2 drop on all pots over $10. If it's a small pot, you drop $2. If it's a big pot, you drop $2. Over time, it evens out so that it's probably less than 2.5% of all pots. We do it to cover our costs for chips, cards, etc and no one gets upset at all.

What finally made the decision to rake easier for me was that, at the end of a night, two players refused to donate for the food/etc and said, "We think it's up to the winners to donate." That's, of course, BS but we need all these players to keep the game so we went to a rake. It turns out that 5 out of 8 guys play in games with a "10% up to $5" rake so they had no problems!!! And these were the same guys who wouldn't donate lol. Now they end up paying more than the $5 we asked for...

aside from a rake being just completely unneccesary in a home game, its totally gay. Make those idiots pay you before the game, and if they don't pay, don't invite them back. I would never play, under any circumstance, in a home game with a rake. Thats the whole reason to play in a home game as opposed to playing in a casino.

This is totally funny. I just started going to a home game and my wife will NOT let me go unless I take some munchies.

She says it's rude to go to someone's house without bringing something with you. Don't a lot of poker players have wives to tell them this too?

There's no rake and no contribution asked for to cover expenses.

If I win the week before my wife allways sends me over with cookies, beer, booze or instructions to buy pizza depending on my winnings. If I lose she merely sends me over with a disapointed look.
