WWF showmanship in poker tourneys
Poker tourneys could be made more fun if they used some of the showmanship tactics from the wrestling side.
I for one would love to see Phil Helmuth come dressed in a shower robe while shuffling a deck with two pretty barely-clad girls holding "Glory to Phil" signs. He could walk around and make faces and threats at players like Gus Hansen before resuming his seat. Gus then could flex his muscles and say something to the effect of "I am gonna beat the crap outta ya!" Sammy Farah could come in with the persona of a Mafia boss with two nastly looking mafia hoods in his tow. Annie Duke could come dressed as a superwoman or a catwoman and provide stellar entertainment. I think even more folks would watch poker and HBO could get away charging $$$ an episode to have the bad boys and bad girls of poker really duke it out in style..... Just a thought |
Re: WWF showmanship in poker tourneys
phil does kind of remind me of mcmahon in a very scary way

Re: WWF showmanship in poker tourneys
Phil? If anyone reminded me of him it would be Gus.
He always looks like hes ready to jump outta his seat and smack someone [img]/images/graemlins/smile.gif[/img] |
Re: WWF showmanship in poker tourneys
Why don't we just take it a step farther and let all the poker pros fight in ladder matches to obtain briefcases full of 100,000 legal chips to be used in the 2005 WSOP? TJ would probably own all.

Re: WWF showmanship in poker tourneys
Unfortunately, ESPN is making poker tourneys look like the WWE.

Re: WWF showmanship in poker tourneys
It's partly ESPN's fault and partly Harrah's. They don't act like that on the WPT.

Intro music...
[Fireworks] "Introducing Daniel Negreanu, with manager Antonio Esfandiari!!!!!" [/Fireworks] <Jim Ross> Daniel is down to a 2 outer on the river Vince. <Vince Van Patten> Here it comes, the river, the cash card, the hot tamale. <Jim Ross>Oh My God!!! Antonio has just hit the dealer over the head with steel chair! They are raining down kicks on the dealer! This is a sickening display. [Fossilman Music] <jim ross> what? what? That's Greg Raymer's music! He's not supposed to be here, this is a WPT event, he is on the WSOP roster! [Raymer enters the room in glittery outfit with the lizzard glasses on and promptly gives a frog splash to Daniel. Antonio is horrified and helps Daniel up and drags him back to the dressing room.] [Raymer grabs mic from the old WPT MC lady] <Raymer> Listen up you punks Antonio and Daniel. In my hands I have a contract that I want you to sign that will pit us against one another, heads-up, in a steel-cage handicap match. [crowd goes wild] [cue shot of Daniel and Antonio with a look of horror on their face]. [Crew Music] <jim ross> Oh no! Here comes The Crew, Dutch Boyd, and Scott Fishman. [Raymer drops mic and goes nuts gesturing for The Crew to come down to the ring] <Boyd> Raymer! Just put that contract away, because I have a match scheduled for tonight against Phil Ivey. <Fishman> Yeah, Ivey, I have you all figured out. <Raymer> Shut up punks. Who has the World Championship Braclet on their wrist? [cue shot of the crew with angry faces], etc, etc... |
Re: WWF showmanship in poker tourneys
Actually with the new ways for brand name poker players to make money these days, I would not find it unreasonable to see agents/managers (not in the wrestling way of course) make an entry into the poker world. Perhaps they already have them.

Re: WWF showmanship in poker tourneys
I think we all realize the increasing absurdity of all this. Poker, bowling and golf are three examples of "sports" that should be played like good boys and girls.
We don't need antics by the Crew, pre-menstrual whining by Hellmuth, poor sportsmanship by Arieh, etc. Cardrooms and casinos that allow ESPN to show this crap need to reevaluate what they want their image to be. We know ESPN doesn't care about their image. What's next? Pete Webber putting a headlock on Brian Voss? Davis Love wacking Tiger with a 5 iron? I did write to ESPN and Harrahs about this issue. As if... |

Trust me, I dislike World Wildlife Fund more than probably anyone on this list -- there stupid lawsuit made it that we had to change the back to all of our cards with the new WWE logo. Ugh. Re: WWF showmanship in poker tourneys
Speaking of Keller, I think he's got the best nickname in poker of "Thunder" Maybe he got it when he tried to imitate Scott Fischman and his table dive. When the table collapsed on the dealer it sounded like Thunder.

Re: WWF showmanship in poker tourneys
As a former pro wrestling addict, I must say your imitation of Jim Ross is spot on!
