Official Indie Starter Kit Thread (Calling all hipsters... sorry euro)
2p2er nomadtla asked me for some advice on getting into 'indie' music. I asked him if he liked the idea of me zipping together 10-12 albums and then sending them to him. He said he thought this was a good idea. So, I ask you, OOT, to help me put this compilation together.
He has told me he is more into the songwriterish stuff than the unique sounds stuff. Though he is open to anything. Given that Im unwilling to put forth the effort to do this if ITAOTS, YHF or the soft bulletin arent included, and Im sure one of Bends/OK Comp have to be included, we are left with 8 albums. Go nuts. |

Re: Official Indie Starter Kit Thread (Calling all hipsters... sorry e
Take out Decemberists (dude's voice is *too* damn indie rock) and put in Iron and Wine's "The Creek Drank the Cradle"
Sufjan's "Illinois" HAS to be in there, IMO. Shins "Oh, Inverted World!" and some Beck would be good too. |
Re: Official Indie Starter Kit Thread (Calling all hipsters... sorry e
Cursive - The Ugly Organ
and Mock Orange - Mind is not Brain HAVE TO BE INCLUDED |
Re: Official Indie Starter Kit Thread (Calling all hipsters... sorry e

Re: Official Indie Starter Kit Thread (Calling all hipsters... sorry e
I've just been getting into all this recently, and there's plenty of albums you guys mention that I've yet to listen to.
That said, Turn on the Bright Lights has gotta be in there. As does Illinois and Kill the Moonlight. For the Radiohead album, I'd include The Bends before OK Computer for newbies. Will |

[ QUOTE ] 7. Pixies - Surfer Rosa [/ QUOTE ] Do you think SR is > DL for someone who has never heard them before?? I think he is more likely to like DL. (DL was on my preliminary list) [/ QUOTE ] Either one is fine. I started with Surfer Rosa and loved it, but Doolittle is cool. SR has the advantage of having the most famous Pixies song ("Where is My Mind") |

Elliott Smith [/ QUOTE ] I think you need at least one of Sufjan/Elliot/Iron and Wine, but probably not more than one. Any sort of consensus on this? Illinois was on my preliminary list, but I really really love either/or. |

Illinois was on my preliminary list, but I really really love either/or. [/ QUOTE ] All 3 of those bands/artists IMO. Sufjan is pretty different to the other two due to his production and instrumentation. I guess if you had to choose between Elliot and Iron and Wine, go w/ Elliot - he was the progenitor of much of this genre as it is. Edit: and the poor bastard's dead by self-inflicted knife in the heart. +10 points |
Re: Official Indie Starter Kit Thread (Calling all hipsters... sorry e
Rilo Kiley absolutely has to go.
