I play up there in spurts. It's come to be too aggravating to play the cash games, so I'm pretty much going to stick to the tournaments up there from here on out. I personally probably won't be up there until a week from Sunday, when I'm scheduled for a casino trip with my grandmother-in-law.

Re: Anyone play at blackhawk?

I go up there about every 6 months, and every time I do, I am reminded why I don't go more often:

1. Smoke
2. 5 guys who are all friends capping to $30 preflop if you are in the pot, then all calling down for $5 on every street, so that every time you play a hand, it has to beat 5 others.

It really does get old, although I like to practice live play occasionally, and this is the only place. You'll easily recognize who plays together, and they aren't above saying things to the effect of "Let's raise up the white boy!" - which is exactly what I heard about 5 times the last time I was there. No point calling the floor or complaining...these are the regulars, and the card room won't make it if they give their bread and butter a hard time.

I also don't mean to come off as a bitter loser - overall, the games up there have been very profitable for me, but it is pure gambling....I might as well be playing roulette.

I'll second that.I play in spurts in Blackhawk as well.My favorite for both tourneys and ring games is Colorado Central station.Competent staff and the best comps in the canyon.
One of these days I need to make an effort to meet the CO 2+2ers.I'm sure some of you are familiar faces because sometimes I'm up the canyon a lot.

CCS is a pretty good room and I like the dealers there, but it's so f'ing smoky I can't stand it. I'm a fan of The Gilpin myself, followed by Mountain High and then CCS. To your last point, we should get a home game some time. I'm in Littleton too, by the way.

You are absolutely right on this...I didn't mention the name of the casino, as I don't feel that I go up there enough to be giving a bad review.

I definitely need to give one of the other rooms a shot...next time, I promise.

The Lodge deserves every bad review it can get.

Solution: sit on the non-smoking side of the room. Even on the smoking side, though, it's probably much less smokey than any other room in town. Check out Mountain High.

By the way, how'd you do yesterday? What/where did you play?

Re: Anyone play at blackhawk?

First, we definitely need to get a Colorado 2+2 home game going!!! I'm also in Littleton and hate the damn $2-$5 spread limit games up in the mountains.

Best place I think is Mountain High. I've done the best there and at the Fortune Valley (use to be Harvey's) in Central City.

The Lodge just plain sucks, too many crazies with tons of money to throw around. Can't tell you how many time my AK has been cracked after flopping top two to runner runner trips. I don't think they call it Holdem' up there, I think it's more accurately called "River."

As for win rates, I buy in for $150 at the $2/$5 game (which seems a little high, most people buy in for $100). Walking away with anything over $100 has to be considered a win up there. What do you think?

Re: Anyone play at blackhawk?

That sucks the smoke gets to you guys. I'll be f'd if I ever quit I guess.

Nearly every game (2-5) I get into up there is soft as hell. I don't understand why people complain.

I avoid the lodge like the plague, although the 2-5 action is still soft. Gilpin is nice but the action is dry. CCS is the shiznat... mega action and the best tournament structure in town. Mountain high is pretty good but the games seem able to be tougher (small sample size). FV used to be a bunch of rocks nut-peddling, I don't go there now. I haven't been to the golden gates' room yet.

I agree with pretty much everything. I play at CCS every Saturday night and there are always plenty of action.

Re: Anyone play at blackhawk?

I've played at CCS and the Gilpin. I made more $ at CCS but I like the Gilpin's room. Haven't tried FV or MH but I heard (maybe wrongly) that MH's games are like the Lodge. I also heard that if you have a player's card (like the slot club) they pay you $1 an hour.

I have a friend who's a floor at the Lodge. He doesn't understand why I don't like playing "the lottery", as I call their games.

michiganlaw 09-29-2005 11:33 AM

Re: Anyone play at blackhawk?

What amount of money do you all buy in for up in Blackhawk...assume you're playing the 2-5 games.

What is your average winrate? Not in terms of big blinds per hour, but in terms of total earnings per session? I'm doing well I think if I take home $100 after a four hour session.

Wetdog 09-29-2005 11:39 AM

Re: Anyone play at blackhawk?

I usually buy a rack of white and a stack of red for show, so that's $200. Usually I'll cash out around $300-350 after 5 hours.

What exactly are you showing? The only thing that shows is when I have a stack of red at the end of the night, I know where it came from.

Anyone ever play at Easy Street or Famous Bonanza in Central City? I'm not sure how good this info is, but I've read they each have one table. I may check it out some time just to complete my chip collection.

I think I might go play the Psycho 50 tonight at The Gilpin. You guys should go pad my prize pool.

Re: Anyone play at blackhawk?

Enjoy playing the lottery. The Friday Night $50 with re-buys is insane. Crazy wackos...I've been told it takes about $300 to be successful in this tourney.

I hate the Gilpin's tourney structures, they become all in fests quite quickly.

We should pick a night next weekend where the Colorado 2+2ers can meet at a casino (larger one) and commandeer a full table.

Actually, it's not that bad. You're allowed up to 8 rebuys, which sounds ridiculous, but in practice, it really doesn't work out that way. I've never seen anyone take more than 2 rebuys. I've only bought one total the three times I've played and I've made the final table each time. I've heard of a table or two going crazy with re-buys, but none of the ones I've been on have had more than 2 or 3 total rebuys. The best part is the fools who rebuy time after time when the blinds are up to something like 200/400. All they're doing is padding the prize pool, because by that time, you're going to be all-in the first hand you play with your 2000 chips. If you bust out at that point, it's time to just pick up and go home. Rebuying is just blowing another $50.

Let's face it. B&M tournaments are all going to be a crapshoot until you get into the bigger buy-ins. This one actually works out relatively well, because there ends up being a lot of chips in play (rebuys and 1000 chip bounties for each person knocked out) and you have a chance to get out ahead of the blinds a little bit. That said, I need to get out to some more of the other rooms' tourneys. I don't have the cash to be playing $200+ tourneys right now, but I'd like to hear your guys' suggestions for what you think is the best structured tournament in town for something more like a $50-$100 buy-in. I think some of the private tournaments are going to be the way to go. I've got to get into some of those.

I don't mean to come off as a schill for The Gilpin, because i do like Mountain High and CCS, but I'd actually recommend The Gilpin for any 2p2 get together as well (if we must play in a casino), as I know it would probably not be difficult at all to get them to put up a table for us. I do know, though, that there's another local poker group that meets at CCS. I don't remember when, though, since I have yet to be able to make it to one of the meet-ups. Unfortunately, I won't be able to do it any time in the next week and a half, as I'll be in L.A. Sunday through Friday and then my wife has family in town after that. Although, I will be up there a week from Sunday entertaining my grandmother-in-law. I'm not sure what time, though.

See you tonight Patrick.

And FYI, the Gilpin will set up a private table at any time. Just ask.

I do have one suggestion for our game. I would like to try out a $3/5 structured limit game with $1 and $3 blinds. I think this game would be much better than the spread. I actually play in a 3/5 choice game here in Denver and it works quite well. Any thoughts?

There are places to play for everyone, Mountain High is my favorite. I would play at the Gilpin but I work there.
