picking out an suv
i'm bored and won't be getting a car for a couple years but am thinking about which ones are best bets.
things it needs to have: 1) navigation system 2) leather 3) center arm rest (not the ones that slide down from the side of seat) 4) not a luxury make (e.g. lexus, mercedes) i was looking at the envoy denali and the volkswagen touareg as initial possibilities. i think i'd prefer an SUV but would take non-SUV suggestions. also, better gas mileage is probably a plus. are the SUV vs. non-SUV mileages very different in general? |
Re: picking out an suv
Planning on climbing any mountains? WTF do you need an SUV for? Please help elevate the overall intelligence ofthe American People and stfu with any more talk of buying an SUV.
SUV have significantly lower gas mileage, significatly higher emission levels, and are much more likely to be involved in a fatal accident (meaning you kill someone in a sedan). SUVs and the dumbasses who buy them are the reason I almost root for the goddamn terrorists now a days. |
Re: picking out an suv
you'll get a volkswagon tourag but not a luxery model? i'd get a BMW X3 before a tourag, that would be in your non luxury price range and still give you a kick ass nav system and your leather/arm rest
X5 would be better but likely out of your price range if you're avoiding luxury models |

And yes, I occasionally climb mountains with it; But even if I didn't do that, I'd also be using it for fishing, towing, camping, and getting through huge snow and/or mud now and then. Maybe you are the one who should STFU! |

Re: picking out an suv
I've had a '99 Ford Explorer for 7 years now. 110,000 miles and still runs great, gets about 19 MPG on the highway, 14 in town. Tighter turning radius than a Volvo sedan. Obviously great in the snow and a very comfortable ride.
|
Re: picking out an suv
Every time I think I want to trade my Explorer in for a Civic I think of people like you and say, maybe I'll trade it in for an Expedition.

looooooool @ responses to weatherman
getting back on topic though, i don't want a luxury model not only because of cost, also because i don't want that kind of image right now. is acura considered luxury (seems borderline)? if not, how are the mdx/tl/tsx? anyone have any experience with the touareg or envoy? |
Re: picking out an suv

Re: picking out an suv
Hahahah...
I love the people who think SUVs are somehow good for "snow." Sure....okay.... Guess what, the big issue with driving on snow isn't moving, its stoppping. Guess how many brakes cars have? Yup, one on each wheel. Guess how many SUVs have? HEY SAME NUMBER. So suburban idiots, which would probably include most of the SUV owners in this thread, get their nice big boost of confidence given their "amazing" traction on snow. Until they try to stop. SUVs are entirely pointless. They can do 70% of what a light truck can do, and they cost more because you are buying into a wonderful, absolutely [censored] pointless brand image. Barnum would be proud. |

They were not stopping. They hit ice and spun. Four-wheel drive is good to have. They do make people overconfident though. You're right about that. People tend to drive like idiots in the snow with their SUVs. As for the comment about SUVs vs. light trucks, I'm not sure what that even meant, but if I'm carrying something big in the snow, I like having it covered? |

Buy a cap for your pickup then.

Re: picking out an suv
If it can't comfortably carry 4 adults and a washing machine, I'm not too interested in owning it. This is why I buy 4Runners instead of Civics or Jeep Wranglers.
Although I may break down and buy a sedan in a few years, when I have enough money and health problems to pay others to move my [censored] around for me. |

Re: picking out an suv
This is America, and we can do what the F*ck we want. If you want to buy a SUV, that's your choice.
If you choose to drive a Geo Metro to work while crying listening to Tori Amos--I don't care. It's your choice. Don't try to push it on everyone else. |

Barnum would be proud. [/ QUOTE ] wrong. I've owned all 3. A car, a truck (two actually) and now an SUV. I got an SUV because it does all of what I want. A truck is nice because I can haul stuff around and tow things and what not, and is great for off roading. but it sucks when it comes to having more than 1 friend and wanting to go someplace, or carrying groceries, and many other everyday little tasks. A car is nice because it does a lot of stuff a truck cant do. You can drive with more than 1 other person. Youve got some room to carry stuff with out having to put it in the bed. But it has obvious limitations, which are pretty much all the pros of the truck. Enter the SUV. It does everything a car and a truck can do. It might not do them as good as each one, but you CAN actually do both. I can still go off roading, and carry home 4x8s from home depot. I can also fit comfortably 4 othe people in my ride when we go somewhere. I can put my dogs in the back without getting dog hair over all my seats, or having to worry about them jumping out. I can carry both my bikes AND a ton of stuff at the same time. and about a billion other things you cant do with just a car, or just a truck. I didnt buy one so that I could fit in with some image. I bought one because it was the best choice given all the things I like to do. |
