Harrington or Raymer?

Who, in your opinion had a better back to back performance at the WSOP ME, Harrington's two final tables (3rd/800+ and 4th/2500+), or Raymers win/2500+ and 25th/5600+?

Re: Harrington or Raymer?

and why?

I have to go with Raymer, two record fields, $5,300,000 cashed, a bracelet, i'm envious.

Re: Harrington or Raymer?

I went with Harrington. They are probably pretty close, but I think getting deep into two consecutive final tables is amazing.

Both accomplishments are mind-boggling.

Re: Harrington or Raymer?

Went w/ Raymer since he also went deep in one of the earlier events w/ 2,000+ people. From a career WSOP perspective, no doubt Dan, 3 final tables, 1 win. Greg still has time though.

Re: Harrington or Raymer?

I think you also need to consider Harringtons win in 95 if you are comparing the two players. However, even without his win in '95 two final tables in a row is more impressive.

Johnny [censored] Chan. Oh wait, he's more like back to back to back. Never mind.

Re: Harrington or Raymer?

I went with Raymer - but they were both very impressive.

If you really want to be impressed, consider this:

Over a twelve year period from 1976 to 1988, Jesse Alto made the main event final table six times! Yes, SIX!

If he had won one of the them, he would be a poker god. Instead, his finishes of 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 6th and 9th are virtually unknown.

Bummer. Hell of a player and a good guy.

Of course the fields back then were like 16 people and two poodles.

I think Brunson made 6 as well in that period.

two of ther most aggressive poodles ever to grace Binions though

Re: Harrington or Raymer?

The reason I'm only including Raymer and Harrington is:
1. Record number of players, anywhere from 6 to 60 times the field size of when Johnny Chan or Doyle won back to back.
2. Last year, Norman Chad declared Dan Harrington's back to back final tables as the greatest achievement in ME history.

Norman Chad is always a good reason.

Don't forget harringtons WSOP ME bracelet!

Re: Harrington or Raymer?

If we're ignoring Harrington's win in 95 I think its Raymer by a nose. His 1st place out of 2500+ and his 25th place finish out of 5600+ are just slightly more impressive to me than Harrington's consecutive final tables. No disrespect to Harrington but I gotta give this one to Fossilman.

Re: Harrington or Raymer?

I can't believe this thread is 7 hours old and nobody has worked out the probabilities.

If the performances were picked out of a hat, for a given player to achieve Harrington's finishes or better would be 1 in 166666, Raymer's would be 1 in 560000.

Of course, since the finishes were not picked out of a hat, the argument would then be whether Harrington's fields were sufficiently more difficult to overcome difference in likelihood.

Re: Harrington or Raymer?

I voted for Raymer originally, but now I remember seeing a picture of Raymer at the table with a McDonalds soft drink cup, and noted at the time this is -EV compared to getting soft drinks in bulk. I feel this tarnishes Raymer's accomplishment, as Harrington would never make such a -EV play.

And this theory is just as silly as trying to debate this issue, especially with Chan not included, which would make it even sillier trying to figure out if making it heads up 3 years in a row in a smaller field is a bigger accomplishment than final tabling in a vast field.

Raymer's back to back years was more impressive.. but Harrington's ME resume is far better.

This makes Chan's accomplishment the most improbable on its face, at 1 in 2.25 million. But Raymer would only need to finish in the top 1/4 of the field next year to match it.

FoxwoodsFiend 07-24-2005 10:59 AM

Re: Harrington or Raymer?

This is pretty obviously Raymer. Match up Raymer's win against Harrington's 4th last year and Raymer has the edge. The only question is whether winning out of 800 is more impressive than 25th out of 5600, and I don't think it is.

DesertCat 07-24-2005 01:11 PM

Re: Harrington or Raymer?

This poll's description of Raymer's accomplishment's was weak. Raymer's really impressive feat is that he's cashed in 4 straight 2500+ entrant WSOP tournaments, including two final tables and one win.
