Shootout at Tahoe Casino Kills One

Shootout at Tahoe Casino Kills One
From Associated Press
December 04, 2005 3:23 AM EST
STATELINE, Nev. - A shootout across a high-stakes players lounge in Harrah's Tahoe casino killed one man, injured two sheriff's deputies and sent gamblers running for the doors Saturday afternoon, authorities and witnesses said.

No one else was in the lounge, just off the main casino, at the time, Harrah's spokesman John Packer said.

Investigators were still trying to determine who fired first and what led to the confrontation. They were questioning a woman believed to have been with the suspect, a man described as about 50 who died at the casino.

"His identity, motive and the manner in which he died are under investigation," Sgt. Tom Mezzetta said. "We're still trying to put the pieces together."

The two deputies had been investigating a report of a suspicious person at the casino.

Deputy Dan Nelson was shot in the hand and hip, and Deputy Erik Eissinger's bullet-proof vest stopped a bullet to the torso. Hospital officials declined to divulge their conditions, but Mezzetta said the injuries were not life-threatening.

The main casino remained open Saturday evening with only the crime scene cordoned off.

Witnesses said the card area wasn't crowded when the shots rang out around 2 p.m.

"I heard a `pop, pop, pop," Jeff Wren, 23, of Sacramento, Calif., told the Tahoe Daily Tribune. "All I saw was a lot of people running for the door."

Packer said most of the casino's gamblers weren't aware of the shooting. He said hotel security had requested the deputies' assistance, but he didn't know why the man was under suspicion

Was this in the poker room, or the high-limit table game area?

Do you think perhaps the big gunshot wound in his chest might be the proximate cause?

It is good to see that poker is returning to its wild west roots.

...Investigators later learned that the victim was trying to rat-hole chips after scooping a large pot. The suspect in custody was subsequently released, and the district attorneys office has stated that no charges will be filed.

Needless to say, but I feel we should all learn from this event. I feel we should hijack this thread and bring up the question of gunshot equity when sucking out your trip ducks on the river.

Getting shot at the table is -EV.
Dying from it is very -EV.

When you are up and take some of your chips off the table to prevent ourself from losing it, sort of like partially cashing out, to reduce you risk. It's something only amateur players do, mostly when they think they are likely to lose because the table plays better than them.

Not necessarily,if he gets to keep his chips, then it is EV neutral. If he happened to be a losing player then it was very much +EV.

I have done this several times (sometimes inadvertently, like when i put some cash into my pocket)...surely this is not a capital offense. This news story is very murky: who was the shooter? Who was the victim? Were they the same person? Was the dead guy shot by the cops? What instigated this whole thing?

My post suggested accusing people of ratholing in the hope that others would shoot them dead, you think I took it seriously?

I'll add this to the myriad of reasons why I prefer playing online. The only way that I can die while playing online is if I spill beer onto my keyboard and electrocute myself.

Not in a poker room. I was playing in Tahoe all weekend and it was a hot topic of conversation, but nobody seemed to know anything beyond what has been in the papers.

I was also in Tahoe all weekend.

The shooting took place as I was walking over to Harrahs. The cops came flying down the street just as we were about to cross the street into the casino. Some idiots were actually still jaywalking when 5 cop cars were coming full speed with lights and sirens.

There was a guy on the corner who had just left/fled from the casino saying her heard like 20 shots. Being the careless/idiotic person I am I decide to go check it out with my girlfriend. I figured the place should be safe since the cops were there and people were still going in and out of the casino.

So we make it across into the casino and it does not seem like anything has happened. No cops, no security, no one running. The games were still in progress, but the place seemed to be a little more quiet than it should be. As we make our way closer to the high limit area we see a small crowd of people kinda staring into the high limit room. There was nobody in the actual room, but there is lounge in the back of the room and I could see EMTs working on someone. At about this point I looked up and saw two of Tahoe's finest running towards us with their guns out and ready to rock. One had an AR-15 or something similar and the other just had a hand gun. We decided now was a good time to meet up with our friends next door at Bill's casino.

That was closest I have been to a killing/shootout and the closest I ever want to be.

On the plus side I was up 5bb for the short time I played over at Harvey's.

Tahoe was a Blast,
Loose.....
