Padooki/Badugi forum - Can we set one up?

I gather this is an emerging game in the US right now. We've been playing it in England for ages now.

I'd love to see a forum here dedicated to this game. I have done quite a bit of work on it at home that I would be happy to share, and would like to hear other people's ideas and strategies. Does anyone know how we'd go about setting one up? I'd be prepared to help moderate it if needed.

It will do fine as part of this forum.

Like tapirboy said: this forum is perfect for badugi discussions

There really aren't that many posts here anyway. And most of them center around games that are similar to badugi.

Ok.

Well I might start making some posts on it to generate discussion then.

Ah, but is it actually a poker game?

pro: Poker-like betting and drawing. Poker theory is extremely applicable.

con: Very different hand ranking system.

But I agree that badugi is on-topic here; I'd hate to send anybody off to the Other Gambling forum. *shiver*

Are there other 'poker' variants with nonstandard hand ranking systems? There's Big Two, I guess, although I'm not sure I believe that's poker because the mechanism is so different. One could make an argument that Chinese Poker isn't poker either despite faithfully following the hand ranks.

A-5? Razz? Since both of those are appropriate here, I don't see why Badugi wouldn't be.

I think of those as standard since they're what is used for split pot games as well. 2-7 is "standard" but inverted.

So is Studuki not poker? Half-poker?

Re: Padooki/Badugi forum - Can we set one up?

I'd be surprised if badugi was not made up as a variant of triple draw that could be played at a full table. I don't see how anyone argues that badugi isn't poker unless they argue that other forms of lowball aren't poker.

I agree that Chinese poker is debatable. The strategy is actually closer to blackjack or pai gau (yes, I'm master of the obvious) than it is to any traditional form of poker.

Edit: Me no post fast enough.

Hm. That's an interesting one. Maybe 5/9ths poker?

Soko is an obvious example of non-standard hand rankings that I should have remembered. Sokugi, anyone?

I'm not convinced 5-card stud is suited to any hi/lo split. Sokugi would be a great action game if you could ever get the rules through to the fish, though.

So, is A(2) the best starting hand, all else being equal? Or is it still going to be AA?

I would post some hands from the days leading up to magoo, but I don't remember much. me mostly drawing 3 to a 4 and making the wheel against cdc and the like

Presuming there's a qualifier (three-card hands can't win low) A(K) is probably better than A(2). Usually any badugi will be good enough to win half. AA will still be way ahead, though.

While I feel several other splits have been incredibly necessary, creating a new Badugi forum would be a waste.

The residents here will help you out a great deal, and the forum should have no problem handling the traffic.

We've had discussions about Brag, Tonk, Gin Rummy and Hearts here at one time or another if my memory doesn't fail me. Brag resembles poker i guess. Most of those discussion probably should have been in Other Gambling but they make sense here somehow.

I agree with those posters saying the padooki would find a happy home on this board, and look forward to any posts you may make on it. My favorite format is pot limit, but would be interested to see how half-pot and limit affect the game.

My personal favorite is Mexican Poker..

But I think that would need to be defined as poker just by its name :P .

I logged in to doyles room and doyle brunson (texdolly) was sitting at the 150/300 badugi on his own. It was soo tempting. But I need my BR.

He was playing 1-2 HPL earlier. Sat down and raised every street and stood pat for the first three hands. Eventually I called him with A25 and he started playing properly.
