Alcoholic gambling addicted lady accidentally gives me a pot

Local B&M game, here's the story:

Playing live, an old woman, at least 80 years old sits down to me. She can't push her own chair in, so she leans over and asks me to help her sit closer to the table. She thanks me after I do.

She proceeds to shuffle her last few bucks in chips and comments to me how badly she's stuck tonight, waiting for her husband to quit the local 8/16 game. I tell her maybe she should just cut her losses and go home, she laughs and says "Oh son, you don't know the problems I've got. I hope you never have to go through what I've gone through."

She orders a vodka sour, no sour; it comes and she drinks it down in one gulp. Over the next few hands she orders another and another, not playing one hand. It's pretty obvious that she's a rock.

Since we're on the end of the table, she moves to the left of the dealer to get a better look at the board. She orders a few more vodkas, drinking them down in the same fashion.

Then the hand comes; I get dealt QJs in late position, no limpers. I raise, and she reraises out of the SB everyone folds and I call. The flop comes Q62 rainbow and I check raise her, since she hasn't shown down a hand yet, just folding.

She looks at me carefully, calls; I bet the blank turn and she thinks for a long time and calls. I bet the river out of desperation since I know I'm behind and she looks down at her hand and says "Sonny, I bet you got three twos" and throws out her bucks.

I just say, "No, I bet you have a better queen" and table my hand. The dealer pushes up the queen. The old woman looks at her hand disgusted and mucks it. The dealer saw the womans hand since she was right by him and he grabs it and looks at it again, because she can't see it. He flashes me her hand, AQ, and pushes me the pot.

The pot is sitting right in front of my stack and I know exactly which chips were in the pot that was just pushed to me.

After the hand the dealer tells her to table her hands after they're done so that they can be read and the old lady starts saying that I was cheating and that I said I had three queens.

The pot is still in front of my stack, what would you have done?

Part of your edge is that you aren't an alcoholic. You obviously didn't cheat to win this pot. She might as well have folded, would you want to give her the pot then?

She would have to pry those chips from my cold dead hands, personally.

Why is the dealer retrieving a mucked hand? I think I would have asked Al to kick him in the nuts.

Since Shant hasn't posted yet....

If she actually misread and wasn't a stupid drunk who accused you of cheating I'd give her the pot. I mean, if she made a mistake on the end and you knew she had AQ and her cards didnt get mixed just give her the pot and don't be an ass.

I agree I would feel bad myself..damn concience. But it is mucked and would have said that is the rule...once its on the muck pile its dead.

Oh, ship her the damn pot, or at least offer to chop it. Unless you need that money to pay rent, you don't know the problems she's got, and I hope you never have to go through what she's gone through.

Being a nice guy is only -EV if all you value is money.

Edit: That said, the dealer screwed up by showing you the hand. He shouldn't put you in a spot like that or make you feel bad for winning a pot. That's our job.

She's eighty years old with good enough health to play poker in a casino. I should end up being so fortunate.

Re: Alcoholic gambling addicted lady accidentally gives me a pot

When I saw the title to this post, I assumed it was going to be another stupid thread in regards to someone wanting to justify keeping a mistakingly awarded pot after a showdown. However, the fact that the old lush mucked her hand without showing makes the decision to keep the pot ridiculously simple.

And the dealer needs a good kick in the nuts.

This dealer would be on my [censored] list. He should not have looked at her hand, he should not have shown you her hand, he should not be telling a player to show a hand. The old drunk mucked a hand that should have been the end of this story.

Re: Alcoholic gambling addicted lady accidentally gives me a pot

Everyone has the option to let the cards speak by tabling their hand at the end. Anyone who declines that option and mistakenly mucks a winner deserves no sympathy.

Re: Alcoholic gambling addicted lady accidentally gives me a pot

Remember there are more rules to the game. You need to follow all the rules. Her hand was dead when it hit the muck. Like another poster said you advantage was not being drunk.

If you want to give her some money afterwards then you giving her money like you would give money to a homeless person or a charity. If thats what you want to do, fine.

You definately should not give it to her because she was *supposed* to win. She didn't table the winning hand...You did. You gave her every opportunity within the rules to claim the pot.

Wtf was this dealer thinking?

What would I have done? I'd have told the dealer not to flash anyones hand to anyone unless they are asked to.

Then you stack your chips.

Keep it, move to her right, and offer to buy her next drink.

Re: Alcoholic gambling addicted lady accidentally gives me a pot

I was pretty upset at the dealer, the only reason he grabbed her hand is because the way she was holding it, he could see it (I think he was so surprised she mucked that he lost it).

I dunno, I shrugged and took the pot. This actually happened a couple years ago, but I got into an argument with some friends about what I should have done. I said according to the rules, I keep the pot, they said I was being a dick, stealing from old drunk women.

They went on to say if it was a drunk 25 year old kid with the same problems, they wouldn't have cared.

Any drunk is fair game. I look it as a matter of solving their addiction. No money, no drink, rehab for free. On me.

"what would you have done?"

Folded when she bet the flop.

As it was, I'd give her half the pot. And I'd tell the dealer, in private, not to show anybody's hand to anybody else when it's mucked.

Hmmm, if you don't mind taking her money with strategic play, i.e. you're in a better position to take her money than she is to take yours, I wouldn't see it as much of a moral step to just accept the money and pass it off as part of the game is to not give other your money and that's what she's doing. Then three steps away from that is stealing because she wasn't watching. Subjective call as these things go in the world of no absolute morals, me? I keep, but am nice to her and say thanks.
