I had no idea there was such an indie following here...
I actually just started getting into it, after many years of being a prick about it and refusing to listen. Specifically, I have been hearing great stuff about elliot smith for at least two years, and never listened to anything by him, until about a month ago when I was in this hot girls room at my school, and I actually liked it, so she direct connected all the music he made to me, and I listened to it pretty much nonstop until a few days ago when I forced myself to download more music, such as picaresque by the decemberists. And I am now delving into modest mouse, I downloaded their discography. Any suggestions on bands to listen to? (I've listened to the new pornographers, their ok, I don't really care for Xiu Xiu, and I dislike Bright Eyes)

Re: I had no idea there was such an indie following here...
I'll just recommend Built to Spill. My favorite band ever. Listen to "I Wouldn't Hurt a Fly", "Car", and "Carry the Zero".
|
Re: I had no idea there was such an indie following here...
Get Neutral Milk Hotel's "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea".
|
Re: I had no idea there was such an indie following here...

Re: I had no idea there was such an indie following here...
It's hard to define indie anymore. Modest Mouse is the easy one, though. Now I feel more like it's about some kind of "indie cred" and it's gotten pretty stupid. The Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs have indie cred. Hell, I think Coldplay used to have indie cred before Rush of Blood.
If you want to name some older indie bands, I'd say Sonic Youth and Pavement are "indie", Pavement moreso. Sonic Youth is like..."no-core" whatever that means. |
Re: I had no idea there was such an indie following here...
Some previously unmentioned biggies: Arcade Fire, Wolf Parade, Spoon, The Shins...
And another one that gets a special shout out because they are from my hometown: Calexico. |

ugh macdaddy, i hope you realize that it is a cover of the far far far superior love/arthur lee.
but if i was a betting man, i would say you were blissfully unawares. |
Re: I had no idea there was such an indie following here...
BLISSFULLY UNAWARES [censored]
EDIT: So yeah, I wasn't missing out on much. "Far, far, far" is a stretch, eh? |
Re: I had no idea there was such an indie following here...
far far then. then again i liked love and that song a long time ago. and thought wes anderson used it brilliantly in 'bottle rocket'.
i think calexico is decent by the way. but when that plays, i almost always switch to arthur lee. |

Get Neutral Milk Hotel's "In the Aeroplane Over the Sea". [/ QUOTE ] OP, I did this exact thing at first and I highly suggest against it. It turned me off to indie for awhile because it is just so out there. Give it a listen to later on after you have heard more stuff. |
Re: I had no idea there was such an indie following here...
try:
sufjan stevens will oldham/bonnie prince billy songs ohia/magnolia electric co zumpano (pre-new pornographers and better) turin brakes go team are very popular around here belle and sebastian there's tons of good stuff out there. get on [censored] and dig in. |
Re: I had no idea there was such an indie following here...
I would recommend the Decemberists and Iron and Wine.
both of these are pretty obscure and if you ever find yourself in a hipster argument with Jack of Arcades or CallMeIshmael you can just drop either name and instantly claim the upper hand. I'd advise staying far, far away from bands like Modest Mouse who have "music videos" on television. they are [censored] sellouts and have already killed their cred. you will be a laughing stock if you listen to this. also, don't forget some of The Clash to keep it real/old school. good luck, and just remember that when you debate hipster music on this board the true masters are going to try to overwhelm you with the most obscure stuff just to make you feel like less of a person. sometimes they'll even make up bands/albums/songs just to test you. if you find yourself in one of these situations, just remember that while the person talks big and tough, on the inside he is just a little boy in Spain playing pianos filled with flames. |

Re: I had no idea there was such an indie following here...
The Listening Post on Accuradio.com is great for new stuff and you can skip the crap you don't like. Current play list includes Sufjan, My Morning Jacket, New Pornographers, Wolf Parade, Son Volt, Nickel Creek, and Coheed and Cambria, all decent. Unfortunately they also have a couple of tracks from the new McCartney and Stones album, but luckily you can just skip them. I highly recommend this channel for new but accessible stuff.

Re: I had no idea there was such an indie following here...
Sebadoh est LA BOMBA.
BTW: Is "indie" still short for something, or is it just a word now? The music-nit complaint that "indie" bands are no longer on independent labels is so tired and seems almost superfluous to the genre...(Like that dumb: "MTV doesn't even play videos" or "Rap is CRAP deheheh" moranity)...it has come to mean a particular sound and style, and why not? I remember the first time I heard the term, in middle school, I thought it had something to do with "India" or "Indigeneous"...maybe we should just declare that indie is short for something else... --GA PS: Eurotrash est LA BOMBA aussi... |
