Accomodations Near Bicycle Casino/Commerce in LA

Any suggestions of reasonable accomodations near these two casinos? I'm mainly looking for something that's close to these casinos and in a good area. (closer to the Bike is preferrable).

There are a number of choices listed at
http://www.thebike.com/accomodations/index.php
but I wanted to see if anyone had any personal recommendations.

Also, how far of a taxi ride is it from The Bike to the Commerce?

thanks

I found some replies in some other posts, and from looking around online, I think I am probably just going to stay at the Commerce hotel itself and try and get the poker room rate... apparently the areas around the casinos are not that great, at least if I am going somewhere to sleep at night it is good to know that you are safe and it's not going to get broken in to.

Re: Accomodations Near Bicycle Casino/Commerce in LA

I've heard that the rooms at the Commerce itself are very nice, if a little expensive. I don't know what the poker room rate is these days. Whenever I visit Commerce I stay at the Wyndham Gardens. It's a couple of blocks away and the Commerce will shuttle you back and forth which is not that much of a hassle. It is a very nice place with good rooms and comfortable beds. A decent restaurant/bar with room service. What I really like is that it gets me off the property so that I'm not tempted to back down to play when I really want to go to sleep. Do not stay at the place diagonally across from the Commerce (the Commerce Hotel, I think) no matter what.

The Ramada Limited is right across from the Bike and is just that: limited. The most you can say for it is that it's clean and minimally acceptable. Go thru the Bike's concierge desk and they get you a $49 room rate. When the airlines allowed 2 carry-ons I used to bring my own pillow when I stayed there. If you want a big, fluffy pillow that's not the place for you. Although it's not a great neighborhood I've never felt unsafe crossing the street even at 4 am. There is another place down the street from the Bike, I forget the name. When I checked in the clerk, from behind bullet-proof glass, asked if I was renting by the day or the hour. I requested by the day and as far away from the other people as possible. I can't recommend that place.

The hotel at Commerce has a poker rate of $99. Occasionally, you can get $89. The rooms are very nice, and the convenience of just going up the elevator to your room is the nuts!

The Commerce Plaza hotel across the street is scheduled for demolition due to widening I-5, so it is kind of irrelevant right now, but I didn't find anything wrong with it, it was definately a no-frills kind of place, but functional and cheap if you were just looking for a place to sleep, and didn't care about extra amenities.

I'm just going to jump on this thread instead of making another Commerce/Bike thread. It looks like the OP has already made a decision, so I hope any hijack isn't too big a crime.

Anyway, it looks like I'm going to Long Beach next week for work. The Bike and Commerce are just up 710 from there, huh? How hellish is traffic going to be for me to get there from Long Beach at 5:00-6:00 on a weekday?

Where else should I go while I'm in town? Also, here's your chance to say again which is better between The Bike/Commerce/Other.

A lot depends on what part of Long Beach you are working at. From downtown Long Beach you want to jump on the 710 north. Usually this isn't too bad northbound around 6:00 as the truck traffic is a lot less at that hour. Easiest to get to is the Bike, get off at Florence about two miles north of the 105 intersection. Note that the 710 does not have an exit southbound to the 5 so getting to the Commerce is a bit harder. Usually best is taking Washington East a few miles to Telegraph (after going under the 5 freeway, take a left onto Telegraph - Commerce is 1/4 mile on right).

From East Long Beach take the 605 north to the 5 north. 605 is usually OK northbound after 6:00 pm. On the way you will pass Hawaiian Gardens just East of the Carson exit. Commerce is about 12 miles farther on the 5 north. Exit at Washington.

I'll be at the Hyatt Regency, which looks like it's close to the 710 and Ocean Blvd, right near the water. It looks like there's a marina right across the street from it.

That would be a good 40 minute - 1 hour drive between the times that you had listed, possibly even more.

This is not what I want to hear. Is there not a Long Beach to Commerce express lane only for poker players?

I don't agree with this. I've driven from downtown Long Beach to the Bike before during traffic, and it's not more than 30 minutes. Without traffic it's 15, but with traffic it's 30 minutes max. I'd say your best bet is the Bike. Just take the 710 North, get off at Florence (like Rick said). Easy, fast, good cardroom. Done.

(PM me when you go if you want to meet up -- I play the 6/12 and 8/16 there a lot)

It's easy to get from the Hyatt to the 710. Bike is definitely easier. Str8 shot up the 710, exit Florence. Drive time will depend on how traffic is that day and can be as little as 20 minutes and as long as an hour. Just depends on that days traffic conditions. It's not a long distance. 15 miles max, maybe a little less. But rush hour traffic or an accident can be a problem.

Keep in mind rush hour on the 710 differs somewhat from other freeways due the trucks coming north from late morning to late afternoon from the port of Long Beach. In any event usually it's not bad south of the intersection with the 105. From there it's just a couple grueling miles to the Bike but about eight to the Commerce. This freeway is also pretty clear on the weekends since you don't have so many trucks and little recreational traffic (unlike the 405 and 5).

Patrick may want to try Google maps to get an idea. All the casinos have web sites with addresses.

Yeah, of course I've done this. I was just looking for a feel on how bad the drive is. Thanks for the info, guys.

How are the low no-limit games? I'm playing NL right now for the first time at the .5/1 on Stars and I think I'll take a shot at it when I go to L.A. instead of the same old limit games.

I've played the $200 buy-in at the Bike and it's pretty soft. There were 1 or 2 guys who knew what they were doing, but mostly it was donks and gambooooolers.

I suck at NL and I won $75.

Cool. Anybody else going to be up there next week? I'll be there with a couple other guys from work, so I'm not sure what they've got plans for after the seminars each day. I know there's some crazy dinner thing on Wednesday, so that leaves Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday for me so far.

You will be a huge favorite in the fixed buy $100 and $200 level games with $2/$3 and $3/$5 blinds respectively. Bike games tend to be a little less donked up but the comfort level is very high in the no limit section (which is actually part of top section). Commerce games might be a bit looser but the fixed buy NL section is in the middle of the noisy and crowded older wing.
