and yet another Vegas hotel question.................

I'm thinking of going out to Vegas to scout jobs among other things. I will need a veeeeery cheap place to stay. I noticed that the Stratosphere is having a $30!!! mid week deal. I have heard there are safety issues with this hotel (parking lot at night etc.) What are theeeeee three best ultra cheap hotels (strip or Freemont street) without making me feel like I'm staying in a meth lab.

I've been outside the Stratosphere at night and never got mugged, but YMMV. Are you driving your own car or taking a cab? If you're driving your own, you could always valet it and then you'll always be at a lighted entrance. If you're taking a cab, I wouldn't worry about it.

Will prolly have a rental. Definitely will have a car.
By the way, any known best sites to book vegas trips on? Of course I'm aware of the majors like Orbitz etc. but was wondering if there are any better "Vegas Only" sites. I know I can google till I'm blue, but wanted to know if any stood out.

One time I used lasvegas.com, I got the cheapest rate on there. The nice thing about that site is it lets you search by area (strip, downtown, etc). If you look there, make sure to check the hotel's website to see if you can get it cheaper through them.

Thanks for the link. Looks like a good site. Looks like Binions is around $35 a night - not bad. Strip or Freemont Street is now the decision.

If you're looking to do it as cheaply as possible (it looks like you are), I would go with Downtown. The food there is much cheaper, and you can easily walk to the other casinos. Since you're going to have a car, you don't really need to worry if you want to go to the strip.

Downtown info

Ask for the "Web cash" offer at the Lady Luck and they'll shave 10% off. Before the discount the rooms will run you about $30 a night weeknights in August.

The Vegas Club is also about $30 weeknights in August, but it's on Freemont Street... unlike the Lady Luck which is one block north.

The Plaza is about the same price, but IIRC my friends who were staying downtown said that they were sold out for a good part of the month. All the others downtown were either more expensive or booked solid when I last checked.

And of course there's always The Western. A 5 star hotel at very affordable prices.

I love how my sarcasm detector is getting better by reading posts. That hotel (Western) is practically a meth lab. Then again, I suppose I should bump my hotel rate up a bit to avoid any of these [censored] holes.

Re: Downtown info

You don't really have to worry about staying in a roach pit if you book online. The scummy places tend not to have websites. Nevertheless, The Western is worth checking out at least once if you don't mind the smell of fresh urine.

I just stayed at the strat a few months ago. wouldn't do it again. doesn't feel like a methlab though. Binions is cheap but it kinda feels like a methlab. Dark and dingy. Motel 6 to me is the Mcdonalds of motels. You always kinda know what your going to get.

Might want to check out Westward Ho on the strip.

I've never been in a meth lab so I don't know how it compares.

I recently booked a room at the Boardwalk for $30 a night, and its right on the strip. In June I stayed at the San Remo for $29 a night (dumpy but for the money just fine). These rates are Sunday-Thursday.

I wouldn't get a car unless you plan on leaving the general Vegas area(Hoover Dam, etc.) The Motel 6 on Tropicana(right across from the MGM Grand) is nice and clean and in a great location.

Also, go to Travelworm.com and look at the Sahara. It's $39 and the monorail goes to that location so you wouldn't need a car.

Go to Expedia and plug in your dates.

Then check the hotel websites for the 5 or 6 that are cheapest.

Spartacus 08-05-2005 10:20 AM

Search them all....

Try TravelAxe to find your best price. They search a dozen or so different sites for the best price. Do not book on the site with the lowest price. Call the hotel you pick directly and tell them the best price you found. They will match it or beat it. This way if you need to cancel, there will likely not be a problem. Booking with the online site may buy you the room whether you stay there or not.

Good luck....

PS I use the above method for finding flights as well. Use Travelocity, Orbitz, etc, then book the flight on the desired airline's website. It usually saves me $5 or $10 and gets bonus miles.
